'honest to blog'

^^^unforgivable.

I didn't hate this movie at the time (altho I didn't particularly like it either) but I hate it more in retrospect

With that out of the way, I have to concur w/call all destroyer & ENBB. It seems like there are bigger crimes against cinema than this.

this isnt a bad movie - like, it's not for me at all, but i expected it to be a lot worse

otm. Finally saw it last year. My first introduction was a clip of the dialog played in an NPR review and I thought it had to be the nadir of everything ever, but there you go.

six months pass...

someone should do a video where george c. scott watches this scene

Leah: Yo Yo Yiggady Yo.
Juno MacGuff: I'm at suicide risk.
Leah: Juno?
Juno MacGuff: No, it's Morgan Freeman. Do you have any bones that need collecting?
Leah: Only the one in my pants...
Juno MacGuff: I'm pregnant.
Leah: What? Honest to blog?
Juno MacGuff: Yeah. Yeah, it's Bleekers.
Leah: It's probably just a food baby. Did you have a big lunch?
Juno MacGuff: No, this is not a food baby all right? I've taken like three pregnancy tests, and I'm forshizz up the spout.
Leah: How did you even generate enough pee for three pregnancy tests? That's amazing...
Juno MacGuff: I don't know, I drank like, ten tons of Sunny D... Anyway dude, I'm telling you I'm pregnant and you're acting shockingly cavalier.
Leah: Is this for real? Like, for real for real?
Juno MacGuff: Unfortunately, yes.
Leah: Oh my GOD. Oh shit! Phuket, Thailand!
Juno MacGuff: There we go. That was kind of the emotion that I was searching for on the first take.

"Honest to blog? . . . I'm forshizz up the spout . . . Oh shit! Phuket, Thailand!"

._.

After defending Up in the Air against charges of everything from bestiality to mass murder last year (partial exaggeration), I watched Juno for the first time a couple of months ago and was surprised by how thoroughly I disliked it.

clemenza, Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:28 (twelve years ago) link

I am not gonna lie, I find every ludicrous, tacky turn of "Juno" hilarious

basically, I don't see how you can't laugh your ass off at that dialogue and just enjoy life a little more

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

could you expand on your dislike, clemenza

also this reminds me of my vow to greet all of my friends with "Yo Yo Yiggady Yo"

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

Dan I didn't think it was awful or anything but I didn't love it either and the dialogue did bug me a little. I only saw it once though and don't really remember the specifics of why I didn't love it.

(。◕‿‿◕。) (ENBB), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

I thought it was a on the self-precious side but I pretty quickly started viewing all of the characters as being distorted prisms refracted through Juno's quirkometer and what seemed overly fake turned into ludicrously stylized and hilarious.

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

Sure--just don't ask me to go down the Up in the Air road again.

I found it hard to look past Juno's character. She seemed like something out of sitcom to me--every line was an acerbic and not especially witty comeback. I found her very tiresome very quickly. I found all the little signs of coolness or whatever that were hung on her--(from memory) Herschell G. Lewis, the Stooges, etc.--contrived. The relationship between her and Jason Bateman didn't seem credible to me at all.

Those were my main objections. But I didn't think the film was evil or anything, hence my exasperation defending Up in the Air last year.

clemenza, Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

Huh. Yeah I definitely didn't think about it that much at all. I also saw it when I was working with preg teens so I'm pretty sure I was really apprehensive about it in general. I think maybe I found Juno herself really unlikeable too but I can't be sure. I should watch it again someday now that I'm now longer knee deep in that shizz as our little lady herself might say.

diablo cody needs to be dropped down a well and then the mouth of the well needs to be bricked over and then the plot of land the well is on needs to be saturation bombed

Juno isn't particularly likeable but many of the reactions in the movie are so ludicrous that I just spent a lot of time lolling; the only "authentic" scenes in the movie (I believe intentionally so) are the birth scene and its immediate aftermath, although IIRC people act less like caricatures from that point in the movie onward (basically because Juno grows up some after this experience and isn't perceiving everyone around her as sitcom characters).

This is all super half-baked speculation based off of half paying attention to the movie while playing WoW, btw

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link

i kind of liked this movie even though the dialogue is sometimes really irritating. i think the scene tamtam quoted is the worst. jennifer garner's storyline is good, i think.

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link

lol it's hard to argue with strongo's perspective otoh

diablo cody needs to be dropped down a well and then the mouth of the well needs to be bricked over and then the plot of land the well is on needs to be saturation bombed

if you did that, Ring-esque tapes would circulate with random images going "Yo Yo Yiggady Yo" and "PHUKET, THAILAND" at you; seven days after watching it, Diablo Cody would crawl out of your television and turn your face into a burger phone

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah HS - I remember really liking the Jennifer Garnder bit too and thinking she was great in that role.

(。◕‿‿◕。) (ENBB), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

jennifer's body is actually obviously worse but for some reason the dialogue irks me less coming out of that delightful amanda seyfried

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

ha I watched most of "Jennifer's Body" in a bar and, without dialogue, it was kind of great

little chance jennifer's body is based on the hole song, right? i love that song.

lol I really did not pay attention to Juno, I think I missed almost the entirety of Jason Batemen's part

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:51 (twelve years ago) link

thinking about the lyrics, i guess i don't really want to see a movie based on that song, even though i love it

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:51 (twelve years ago) link

it's kind of a bummer jason bateman has to play a jackass but he was good, too

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

I liked Jennifer's Body, although Diablo Cody's dialogue gets to be a bit much.

online pinata store (Nicole), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

it has nothing to do with the song unless i'm forgetting the part in the song about the queen bitch cheerleader being sacrificed to satan by a touring indie band and coming back as a man-eating demon

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

Point of comparison: Thora Birch's character in Ghost World mostly consists of acerbic comebacks, yet I love the character and love the film. There's sometimes no accounting for how two versions of the same thing hit you differently.

clemenza, Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

ha i didn't even realize it was a diablo cody movie i thought strongo was just doing his peripatetic thing

im pretty sure violet plays over the end credits
