(But what I can't understand is why someone that bright is working at a shoe store...) - momus

What is up with you and your thing with me? Get over it already, dear. It's tiresome - you're a fast food worker. - ally

I would rather make $10k a year than be doing this right now. Obviously not for my entire life, but RIGHT NOW, I would do that. - ally

What you earn and the job you do does not necessarily define your class.

maybe i should've titled the thread 'HATING THE POOR ON ILE'?

ethan, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't get why you picked out that last quote, ethan. $10k a year is well below the poverty level anywhere in the U.S., much less New York. Is it classist to want to earn enough money to cover food and shelter?

Nicole, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

maybe he posted it because it's so dunderheaded.

jess, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i added the last one because otherwise the basis for my thread was a typical momus comment and a typical self-obsessed cuntish ally comment.

It's rather convenient to pluck them out of context and start another thread.

fun, too.

ethan, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

cuntish

Charming.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i'm gonna steal that word right now.

petra jane, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

From now on I'm just going to talk like Axl Rose.

Nicole, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Does that mean you'll appear on MTV in commercials talking about the apartment you're giving up in that one contest?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes! Plus, this will allow me to grow a beergut and stalk Moby.

Nicole, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i don't think any of those remarks are classist. thanks.

Momus's comment - someone with as much language skills as the person in question could easily get a job as a translator or similar high level job, and he doesn't personally understand why one wouldn't go for that. Obviously the person has their own reasons and if asked might explain (not enough time, still getting their education).

My comment #1 - Lovely, Ethan, that you felt the need to take out the part where I pointed out that as a fast food worker you make the salary you should expect, and it was not an insult of fast food workers. You were bitching that you make what is a perfectly normal salary for a part-time fast food employee. I was pointing out that you were getting what you SHOULD expect.

My comment #2 - Ummm...? I just said I wanted to work below poverty level just to get out of my situation, is against poor people how?

Any other questions, fuckwad?

re: momus's comment. leaving aside translating skills which is an obvious skill which can be applied, many bright people do find themselves stuck in shoestore type jobs. teaching is often the only way out (if you're suited to that, that is)

when i came out of uni, i couldn't get any job at all, couldn't even get interviews, i input timesheets for a year. typing in 9,12,12.30,5 endlessly. eventually i got a mediocre admin job, that company gave me the chance to train as a cisco network analyst. i'm doing great now, but i was lucky, i got a break

i don't know about ethans point, i guess he was trying to say there are people doing his job that are older (even if he isn't) and are kind of stuck in it.
