Do individuals, groups, or the whole world population kindle your misanthropy the most?

Definitely individuals for me: people I meet every day or certain authorities such as the U.S. president really invoke my ire. Sometimes groups can, ie a whole bunch of salesmen in a room or a "writers' cricle," situations that highlight their common douchiness. However, I tend to view the 6+ billion on earth as generally decent folks.

You?

groups - e.g. coworkers. But I ain't touching that aspie thread.

It is a pretty bittersweet thread.

Senate Republicans
my ex-girlfriend's ridiculous friends
candidates in recent Mayoral race
etc...

i used to think about this a lot

the average person seems to like individuals because they actually have to deal with them but hates groups based on some percieved characteristic - racists who have non-white friends, misogynists who love their mothers, whatever

i think theres a minority of ppl who dislike most individuals, usually based on actual experience of sharing ideas or actions or whatever, but cant speak for groups in the same way

im definitely in the 2nd one

and what, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Me too, for real.

Abbott, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

people suck

carne asada, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

But not you guys, you’re all cool

carne asada, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

i tend to like individuals because unless they're across the board awful, i can usually find some reason to think that, at the end of the day, they're probably all right. or, even if they're not, reason that they're from Circumstances, and cut them some slack.

this extends to most of the world's population as well.

but groups definitely get my attention: c.f. "most" frat boys are idiots, "most" hipster scum assholes are way too interested in typography, "most" etc.

slippery slope, obv, but whatever.

gbx, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

feeling misanthropic about groups is the wellspring of about 90% of the jokes in the world, funny and not funny, acceptable and offensive alike.

gbx, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

All I know is that the more I believe in loving the general public in a "fellow humankind" way and understanding that we're all connected, the less I want to meet them.

Laurel, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, I rarely have an encounter with a single individual that makes me want to pack it in and move to remotest Argentina.

ftw

kenan, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

I have encounters with individuals pretty much every day that make me want to move to Australia. Oh no, wait, some of them came from there.

Laurel, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

Darkest Peru, then.

Laurel, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

Groups, for reasons mentioned above. Individual human beings when encountered face-to-face usually have some redeeming feature(s) upon closer inspection or at least have extenuating circumstances that explain their asshole-ishness.

dell, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

people are ok

max r, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

Laurel, I'm going to darkest Peru in March. Try to schedule your visit accordingly. :D

groups, because that's how bullshit starts. I know plenty of lovely people so I don't hate the world, and individuals are usually harmless.

Groups, on the other hand are responsible for the following:

--Forwarding bullshit urban myths like "you will get AIDS from needles at the gas pump"
--Subscribing to 'group think' on heavy issues that you shouldn't rush your opinion on
--Vote Republican
--Form hate groups
--Signing online petitions and begging you to do it as if it will accomplish ANYTHING
--Telling Justin Bieber he should try recording someday

I am getting better & better at hating humans on a precise, targeted, individual level.

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Sunday, 8 August 2010 04:31 (fifteen years ago)

I'm amazed at how jaded I am about people nowadays. I used to champion that 'all people have good in em' but now I think people are made of crap in general.

plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Sunday, 8 August 2010 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

I do my best (and that means *try* - not always successfully) to be charitable about groups of people. In a sort of negative space way - that there is no entire group of people that is *all* entirely bad.

It's definitely the behaviour of individuals that makes me hate humanity, though. I know that groups have their own dynamics, but it's when an actual individual comes out with something I find hateful that brings out the ARGH I HATE HUMANITY in me.

And although the 6 billion humans on the entire globe are, like any other super-group, neither inherently good nor inherently bad - I do think that the human species as a whole are pretty bad and can go fuck themselves. And yes, I include myself in that assessment.

No surprises in that glowing lump of misanthropy, I don't think.

let me mansplain that to you (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 8 August 2010 09:59 (fifteen years ago)

I've had one of those weeks where I am just disgusted with humanity, on a grand and local scale. On the former, it's embarrassing to be an "American", really fucking embarrassing. The racism, homophobia, xenophobia, the ignorance, everything. In the past I used to think this was sort of a fringe element, but as I get older I increasingly realize that it's a huge amount of people - it's pretty much mainstream. It's awful.

On a personal level, my landlord has screwed me over for over $900 and there's pretty much nothing I can do about it. As a reward for my (naive) hard work, my boss has dumped another person's workload on top of mine. Meanwhile there are 3 people in my branch who LITERALLY DON'T DO ANYTHING. THEY HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITIES. AT ALL. OK, I lied - one person has to arrange a conference call ONCE A MONTH. And they each make more than $100,000 a year. WTF. uuuuuuuuuugh, it goes on and on.

Back in my wonderful stoner days I had a really optimistic view on life. I would walk through the woods and get all hippied out on cool looking birds and running creeks. And I thought that, generally, people were decent. But you know what? On the whole, people are irredeemable fucking assholes. Altruism gets taken advantage of ruthlessly. Run for the hills, this place is fucked.
