Short version: a professional photographer takes a few photos of 18-year-old high school pole vaulter Alli50n 5tokke during a competition. Snarky sports blogger does an entry about her called "Pole Vaulting is Sexy, Barely Legal." Bill Simmons picked up on it and did a post of his own, introducing her to his much larger readership. Somehow, from here, it takes off.
She has a variety of fan groups on MySpace and Facebook, some of which have splintered (!) based on their reasons for existence ("she's a great athelete" vs. "she's hot"). Yahoo Buzz suggests that searches for her name have steadily increased and are now in six digit territory.
Oh, and this all happened over the course of three weeks.
The original photos
The girl in question is uncomfortable with her sudden notoriety. Her lawyer-dad now spends his free time lurking the various fansites etc to make sure nothing illegal is going on and that there are no stalkers.
ps no stalkers here dad, just discussion of the meme-phenomenon

thing is, in california, all the jock grrls are like this -- wholesome and built and tanned and wooo00t. there was a grrl b3cky b0rden in HS who was on par with this grrl. She played volleyball. If you look for some of the other picts (I did) she's a cuet, sweet looking girl. that one picture with the pole on her shoulder just happens to make her look amazonian and stacked.
