To stand them in good stead for their future, or to prevent them making a bad decision?

Just one.

*rumpie*, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

Don't assume things are scary until you've actually tried them!

Groke, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

Be nicer to Julie, she's going to turn out to be really good looking.

j-rock, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

You don't have to stay in this godforesaken country your parents have just moved you to. You can go home, all is not lost. In fact, get out of your parents' house as soon as you can. They're both bonkers. Go to boarding school, go stay with relatives, anything.

Also - a dalmation? What were you thinking! You should have held out for a pony.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

Buy property.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

every girl you fall head over heels with from now on will be a complete waste of your time, and you will get no where with any of them.

And a side note - you will learn nothing from this heartbreaking experience, regardless of what 'they' say.

Ste, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

Stop fucking eating.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

Wear sunscreen

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

Do not fear ghosts.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

Don't worry, you will see Duran Duran eventually and they'll be every bit as good as you hoped.

leigh, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

i like that that one isn't about changing anything.

blueski, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

You're a good kid, don't worry so much about stuff. (This worked by the way, I am now a calm and serene adult. Thanks ILX time-machine!).

kv_nol, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

Don't give up the piano lessons, you'll regret it.

C J, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

tell them how you feel - you never know, it might change everything.

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

Stop picking on your little sister, you cunt.

JimD, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and spend a bit more time on that BASIC programming, you're pretty good at it and it'll turn out to be more useful than you think.

JimD, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

Either take up a musical instrument or run away and join the circus, but hurry up and get started.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

Don't give up the piano lessons, you'll regret it.

-- C J, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:31 (1 hour ago)

OTM!!! Took a few more years but yeah, I really regret it.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Start getting better at sports and getting into better shape NOW

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Don't beat up Kevin Dunn even though he drools and all the other kids want you to prove that you're tough.
Actually, I can't regret that because he is now a lawyer. I know that the misery of grade school politics made him strong.

Don't succumb to peer pressure. Shaun Cassidy is NOT the dreamiest boy ever, and "Hey, Deanie" is not really a good song.

aimurchie, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

observe more. talk less. stop getting hung up about that girl tracey: that's going to go nowhere.

AND IN THREE YEARS' TIME, WHATEVER THE FUCK ELSE YOU DO, DON'T START PLAYING DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Shaun Cassidy is NOT the dreamiest boy ever

Um, yes he is.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Those bullies everyone is telling you to "not worry about" and "just stand up to"? Keep steering fucking clear, son. One of them ends up serving life for killing a granny with a hammer, another dies of toxic psychosis from shitty drugs, and the third is an armed robber. But get your hair cut and stop talking weird shit about books all the same, ffs.

stet, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Go tell your grandmother and if she doesn't do anything, go tell a teacher. Keep telling people until someone does something. Don't be afraid. Whatever ends up happening will be better than what's happening now, I promise.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

GET OUTSIDE AND LOSE SOME GODDAMN WEIGHT

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

in about 3 years, you will have a teacher who will destroy your confidence and interest in math. pay no attention to her, she is as dumb as a brick (you'll know that for certain a couple of years after that).

anhell*ca, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

Demand competent instruction in art and music immediately. Work hard at it, because you'll wish you had later if you didn't.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus had it wrong. Forget that turn the other cheek stuff and trust your instincts.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

You will not be around to see the Tricentennial, no matter what calculations you've worked out in your head about the feasibility of living to be 109.

mike a, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

That new "junk rock" music from England you make fun of with your friends? Will be a huge part of your life as you hit the teens.

mike a, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

Beg to move in with your father instead.

kenan, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

you really need to find a better hiding place for your Guns N Roses and 2 Live Crew cassettes.

will, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

Don't be so shy, there's no point. You assume people who don't know you won't like you but that's not actually true, and sometimes they will think YOU don't like THEM because you don't go talk to them.

Maria, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

You were wrong about your sister - she's not pretending to be dumb because she thinks the boys won't like her if she's clever. She really is that dumb. Don't let it annoy you.

Stone Monkey, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

Don't let those obnoxious little bitches get to you. In about 15 years you will find out that all four of them still live on Long Island and all four of them got really fat. Believe your Mom when she tells you that the geeks always come out on top in the end.

ENBB, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

You're fine. No, really, just fine. But try a bit harder sometimes.

Aimless, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

Plastics.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Don't let Mum put the hamster cage on top of the washing machine, the poor things had heart attacks and died.

Roz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

I had the same deal Roz, except it was a lizard. I made the glass cage myself and my mother put it outside while cleaning and fried the poor bastard. I was seven though, so the advice to my seven year old self wouldn't help.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

Oh noes! But had you known, you could have rescued it before it got too hot.

Roz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wait, nvm, I think you meant advice to your ten-year-old self wouldn't have helped.

Roz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

ms. cook is horrible, sick, human being. she will lie, cheat, and act in inappropriate ways you didn't know existed – and no matter what anybody else says, you need to get away from her. she'll cause damage that'll take a decade or more to get over.

remy bean, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

hey, in five years, don't be so fucking stubborn and accept the ride instead of walking home from work. having to sit for 10 minutes with a dude you find unattractive is a lot more fun than what's going to happen to you otherwise, trust me.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks Roz, I meant 10 year old self.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

ENBB's mom OTM.

anhell*ca, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

Run away from home.

M.V., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

Also - a dalmation? What were you thinking! You should have held out for a pony.

HAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahaha

Abbott, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Get out of school as quickly as possible. Beg to go to any other school. Private school, home school, anything. Nothing good at all is going to come of sticking school out.

Melissa W, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

Bug Dad and make him teach you how to play a sport reasonably well. You'll regret not doing it for the rest of your life.

Tantrum The Cat, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

You know those comic books dad gave us? The ones from his childhood? From the early 40s? Whiz Comics? The Young Allies? Yeah. It's really great that you enjoy them so much, but... keep them in good condition, and don't eventually lose them, ok?

Tell Me About Ten Year Old You

C J, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

try and remember what it's like being ten, so i can give you good advice 16 years hence.

seriously, i can't remember jack shit about being 10. maybe i'd give me a list of valuable rave 12"s to purchase.

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and I'd tell myself to support a better football team.

Hello Sunshine, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

None of this is your fault.

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 16 May 2007 09:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I really can't remember many details, which is why I didn't post to CJ's original thread. I was kind of happy, went to school, played football, ate sweets, fought with my sisters. I'd just started paying very close attention to pop music I guess (1972 was a good year!).

Dr.C, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

Don't cut your hair next year, the resulting frizz bomb will result in bullying you *may* have otherwise avoided.

Anna, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

some of these are heartbreaking.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

"Girls of the world ain't nothin but trouble".

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I remembered something - it was the year of the bad school report. I was always kind of conformist and polite at school, (until 5th + 6th form, but that's another story - blame the Sex Pistols!) but that year a series of fairly minor escapades got frothed up into a report by a very inexperienced teacher (Hi Miss Gill - how ya doin'?) that portrayed me as a juvenile delinquent. Parents NOT amused AT ALL. The next year, I settled back into being polite and conformist and passed my 11-plus.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Going to boarding school is not going to be all jolly hockey-sticks and midnight feasts and the answer to all your problems combined with lots and lots of fun. In fact, it'll just be like a more isolated version of the school you're at at the moment. Stay at home! Also, being brighter than people in your class is nothing to be ashamed of. Dumbing yourself down is only going to make you stupider, not more popular.

ailsa, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

grimly fiendish OTM. I would love to buy all of our ten year olds fizzy drinks and sweets now. Between this and the 20 yr old advice thread I'm v impressed with ILXors as a whole.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

find a trustworthy adult and ask for help. because its only going to get worse.

lurex, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, lurex! Have you been alright since?

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, that just sounds terrible, whatever it is...

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

i'm doing alright thanks. therapy is helping me deal with what happened and all the far-reaching effects - alcoholism, anxiety, anger problems. i've spent the last ten years alienating lots of people who have tried to get close to me!!

lurex, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, ten-year-old self, make your mom buy you a new pair of glasses when they break, or call your dad and get him to pay for them. Don't settle for a taped bridge, it will have deleterious effects on your social standing. And get your dad to pay for airfare back east for the summer instead of letting your mom put you and your brother on a greyhound across the country alone for three days.

Maria :D, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

whooooaaa

Andi Mags, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 23:04 (nineteen years ago)

I'd tell my 10-year-old self to go to work convincing my parents to invest every last dollar they have in this little computer company called Microsoft.

Binjominia, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:13 (nineteen years ago)

Your plan for reading through the entire town library? It's a good one. But starting with the non-fiction and reading straight through, in order? That's going to burn you out and you'll get stuck at Agatha Christie when you finally get into the fiction section. Mix it up! That old lady librarian? Don't be afraid of her; she likes you and will let you check out anything you want.
