No time for losers

My point wasnt really about individuals who dont have sex until they're 18 or 19, it was about the way that some people - often men - end up miserable and alone throughout their whole lives pretty much, and then instead of people sympathising they are basically stigmatised as weirdoes, loners, and probably perverts-in-the-making while all around them society gets ever more, uh, hypersexualised. I think the levels of damage there are fairly extreme

Tom Ewing, 2002.

Beneath the aspirations to human civilisation are we all a bunch of complete cunts? Social determinism, will to power, call it what you want, but is life really all about jostling for position, sneering at life's failures and getting the alpha male (or 'knowing your place' and settling for the omega one) Is there an element of reinforcing ones own superior status in all acts of charity? etc. etc.

Shut up you loser.

I AM THE ALPHA FEMALE.

Actually, question should be, "Should life's failures be ignored and marginalised, or should they be publicly pilloried and humiliated to make an example as well as for sport?"

dave q, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The question does worry me - I think that civilisation breaks down and lets people down the closer to its edge one gets. Some - the very talented or charismatic - can turn this to their advantage, and become successful as artists or entrepreneurs or master criminals. Others just collapse or get crushed. The rest of us muddle through - for us the system works OK and we get on with our life.

Tom, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

In other words I get a bit worried when people attack social conventions per se rather than specific ones, because while social conventions keep some people down they're also all that's holding some people up.

This is simply to confirm that I am no longer responding to or acknowledging Mr Div Cunt's posts. His TalkSportesque right-wing ramblings were moderately amusing the first 280 times but have long since turned stale. I can only advise fellow ILx'ers not to rise to his pallid bait and simply ignore him. Then the obnoxious little twat might get the message and fuck off for good.

i thought this was going to be about the queen musical...oh well...

Geoff, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Reply to Tom: of course that's why folk need religion; even though it might be a con to begin with, it keeps people happy to an extent where otherwise they would suffer the true horror of seeing the world/humanity as it truly is, and stops them from going genuinely mad (alternatively: the true horror of seeing the world/humanity as it really is). So what might be the instrument of the oppressor becomes in itself a weapon against oppression because it requires people to use their imaginations and evolve an UNREALITY which could usefully subvert the "reality." Hence art, music, etc.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Cool. One down. I'm sure they hand out tissues at group therapy, help yourself.

dave q, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Marcello = religion is ALWAYS a con job, and a manifestation/cause of weakness and INABILITY to do anything to but pray.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No, no, and no.

dan, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The line between Religion and Superstition = blurred? Even though they are diametric opposites? See "praying to avert danger" etc. Also see Sean O'Casey's "Shadow Of A Gunman". Side thought. Apologies.

powertonevolume, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't believe that it is ALWAYS a con job; nor that it is always a con job. I don't agree but I'm at a loss to describe why my brain is betraying this thought.

powertonevolume, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Did someone just swallow my posts? I posted twice and they've been obliterated, anyway, jist:

I don't agree with you Sterling but I am at a loss to explain why exactly my brain is betraying this line of thought.

Also (side-thought, apologies) - the line between Religion and Superstition = blurred? Even though they are diametrically opposed? See = "praying to avert danger" etc. Also, see = "The Shadow of a Gunman" by Sean O'Casey.

powertonevolume, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ahh, come on now, someone's messin' with ma head!

powertonevolume, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Clover, as usual you're talking crap. Read my original post again. If you truly believed that you wouldn't even be posting here as that rules out, amongst other things, music.

Do you have lots of fun laughing at the weak as a rule of thumb?

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Only when they're batshit enough to post

dave q, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Can you hand mummy the keyboard back, now? That's right. Nap time.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Blimey, is this the ILM equivalent of that Tyson Lewis press conference? Can I join in? I'd certainly like to lamp dave q for the 'group therapy' remark.

Poor old Johny Ray...

dave q, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Listen to me, Q, you impudent, impenitent, improvident coxcomb, you sad-sack, vulgarian counterfeit. You're an ill-mannered, illiterate, ill-begotten forgery, you botch from the first, you byblow of a rutting ratcatcher who collected your mother's pelt with his cleft stick. You're a lickspittle, lacklustre, beetle-browed nonesuch, a buffoon hoisted on a stick, an ungnawed rib lacking in meat. I abhor your ilk. I defy you and your shallow tittle-tattle. I set my boot upon your stones.

My v.important thread seems to have got bogged down in internet mentalism.

Reality TV idea - 'Combat Group Therapy', where a bunch of genuine nutjobs are stuck in a room and told to 'confront' each other. Every time somebody has a breakdown (violence, tears etc.) they get 'evicted', presumably to a rubber room. The 'winner' (last one left relatively compos mentis) gets extra points if any of the losers are driven to murder or suicide.

dave q, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Err.. isn't this the Jerry Springer show?

N., Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No, that was the 'Jenny Jones Show', where one of the guests shot the other, offstage unfortunately.

dave q, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh yeah - for making a gay pass at him. Nice that.

N., Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If "violence" amounts to, say, turning an Uzi on all the other contestants and mowing them down, would they still get evicted?

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ban this sick death fantasy stunt!

N., Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's an URGENT AND KEY issue which has been thus far criminally omitted from the debate! If all other contestants were reduced to Uzi offal, the gunslinger would be the only one left, so were s/he to be evicted there would be no winner. Would they be entitled to request a rematch or would the sudden decline in ratings not justify said cool carnage? We, the people, need to know.
