When it says "Turn product half way round", does this apply if your microwave has a turntable?

Graham, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And what should one do instead? This is important.

Graham, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes, it still applies. And you should always make sure the item being microwaved is on the outermost possible edge of the turntable.

Don't ask me why though

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i have no idea .

anthony, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Id say no but if you want to be safe turn it upside down

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

is it a kitten?

mark s, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I always wondered about that myself, I must admit.

Norman Phay, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

if it's in the middle of the turntable. um. part of it is hardly moving. just rotating. [I know rotating=moving]. if it's on the outside it will travel more and MAYBE get heated more evenly? I guess that's the turnaround thing too. EVEN HEATING.

richard john gillanders, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I always turn it and I always think "God why do I need to do that" and then I think it's some kind of cosmic test to separate the true free thinkers from the mindless herd and one which I apparently fail every time, sigh.

Tom, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

you know, it works if you don't rotate.

it's really stirring that is key.

nancy b., Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If that's what the product said, and my microwave had a turntable, I wouldn't bother turning it.

Sean, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

true free thinkers = they do not own a microwave

mark s, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm speechless. Really. Hee.. Did the lot of you micro-turntable owners who are still turners think that the nifty little turntable function was added for aesthetic effect? Put it in the centre and LET IT TURN ITSELF.

Kim, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Best free thinkers of all = they will the food to heat on its own.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Nah, true free thinkers don't even eat. Of course the crazy fuckers starve to death, but at least they were free... man.

Kim, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No, this doesn't apply if you have a turntable microwave because it's already being rotated. They mean for the microwaves that don't have turning tables...like mine, where you gotta pause in the middle of heating up and turn it by hand, then continue the rest of the time heating.

kimera, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Nancy is dead on w/ the stirring. Microwaves cook from the outside in; stirring will allow the insides to get cooked as well as the (former) outsides. Turning vaguely accomplishes this feat, maybe? But then, if you're nuking some mac & cheese, the edges of the dish get carbonized, and the center's still a bit stiff in the center.

I've taken to cooking microwave entrees in the oven so the damn things get cooked. That defeats the purpose of a microwave, though, don't it?

David Raposa, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Maybe the free thinkers only eat foods that are unfrozen and at room temperature..

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

MARK S IS A VERY BAD MAN. (but funny!)

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What if I own one but it's never been plugged in?

Kris, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

it applies to the microwave itself.

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i gota devils haircut in my mind

Geoff, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

yes, you MUST stir the thing. i once watched a TV programme (admittedly back in the '80s when microwaves were new and special and YOU PROBABLY WEREN'T EVEN BORN Graham) that demonstrated how heating milk a lot in a microwave leads to "hot spots" where the molecular structure can get all fucked up and carcinogenic, or something. i am therefore paranoid about microwaves and probably stir my microwaved soup far too frequently. yes i know i am far too paranoid. no amount of scientific arguments from the likes of RickyT will put a stop to it though.

but microwaves have also led to general laziness in cooking and the rise of *bleugh* microwave meals = they are Satans's appliances anyhow.

katie, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Mmmmm Tescos Microwaveable 'American' meals. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA oh dear I feel sorry for America when I see those - never mind half of them are 'enchiladas' or 'nachos' anyway. Hmmm yes. I saw microwaveable ready made mashed potato the other day. Even the ANTI-COOK can make bluddy... SMASH.

Sarah, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What shape is the product? If it's a haxagon or a septagon, I'd say you have a problem.

I've never used a microwave.

j>e>l, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Which is probably why there aren't many hexagon or septagon shaped food stuffs. There should be though!

j>e>l, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Golden Grahams!!!

Pete, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Kim, do you see why your 'put it in the centre' policy is misguided?

N., Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I see Pete has embraced jel's suggestion.

Like being born early is something to brag about, FOGEY. And how do you expect me to stir a lasagne? eh? eh? eh? EH?

Question for free thinkers: What do you do half way through if you don't turn it around? Do you dial in another 6 minutes as soon as pings, or are you totally punXor and put in 12½ minutes from the start?

(And why has no one invented a toaster that pings?)

Graham, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I always though Golden Grahams were Hexagonat as well. Honeycombs are too, as are snowflakes.

Pete, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

http://www.agentjim.com/ConsumerDisliked/FreeCD.jpgHow so, Pete? No wodner i just thought you were being random.

Graham, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

When she wasn't rustling up Seafood Medleys Pete's mum was nibbling off the edges of Little Pete's Golden Grahams to make them hexagonal to stir his childhood mathematical urges.

Emma, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Num num Mum. This breakfast cereal tessellates!

Pete, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Maybe they mean turn the microwave around.

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I miss my microwave. I am a free thinker who'd rather not be, apparently. Still. I know I'd only put comedy items in it to see what they looked like melted. Toasters do not need pingers as there is that noise when the toast pops that always terrifies me. Yes. I am scared of toasters.

alix, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Nick, no. My microwave, despite it's cheapness and mini proportions, actually, like, works, actually. No really, it does. I put the rectangular little box of spaghetti or whatever 'in the centre' and set the timer for the full amount of time, sans turning break, and approximately four minutes later my spaghetti is full of hot steamy goodness AS IF BY MAGIC. I clap wildly (as is my custom) and scream out to no one in particular "Behold! My individually packaged and portion controlled dinner (now with even more flavour) is served!" I do stir, it's wise, but not cause bits are uncooked or crusty - just because the big assembly line sauce squirty thing tends to put the tomato stuff in a big glob on only one bit of the spaghetti, which sucks but is easily corrected.

Kim, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link
