Damn! That was Maradona-esque.

Michael White, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

he's no Tony Daley, but I'd give him a trial.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

compare to Maradona. seem familiar?

admrl, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, wow! Run up from the right touchline past at least two defenders, fake out keeper, score, also Argentinian.

Michael White, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

I just watched that and the Maradona goal one after the other and I think Messi's might actually be better. Even narrower angle, even less space to begin with, more defenders to get past. Bloody hell.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

Also, Newell's and Barca, but Messi's a towering 5'7".

Michael White, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Eamon Dunphy says he's the best player in the world currently. He may have a point.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

It's his first touch, flicked from one foot to the other to get past the Getafe player that's possibly the best bit.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

Matt, OTM, though the switch that eludes the sliding tackle near the edge of the box is pretty cool, too.

Michael White, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

This is not Messi, but I just want to post it again because it's still my favourite goal ever:

http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/ibrahimovic%2Bbreda/video/x1mjqo_ibrahimovic-vs-nac-breda

Feel free to follow suit!

admrl, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

Hang on, does he nutmeg the second Getafe player as well? I can't quite tell.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

You're right Matt, I think he does!

admrl, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

Not sure but it's masterful anyway.

Michael White, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ibrahimovic's is cheeky as fuk.

Michael White, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

Aye, I posted that Ibrahimovic one on the youtube football thread. Brilliant.

ailsa, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

I would like to be able to deal with life's pressures and obstacles in the same manner with which he deals with the NAC Breda defenders.

admrl, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

my buddy did that on a regular basis during IM games, whenever he got bored with how poorly everyone else was playing

river wolf, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

We've seen most of these before on the other YouTube football thread. More bits of Messi genius please.

Matt DC, Thursday, 19 April 2007 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

The close up on Van Der Vart in the audience is priceless(he had a feud with Ibrahimovic at the time).

Lovelace, Thursday, 19 April 2007 09:44 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, David Hirst did the same thing against Hull in 1991.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 19 April 2007 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

the most impressive thing is the angle at which Messi cuts it in at the end.

this is the messi of messi threads, the other one may have better stats and probably spends more time pouting over free kicks but this is the real thing

I was there. Espanyol were unlucky not to be 3-0 up at 44 minutes in. Messi really is brilliant though. Spends the whole game standing around like he shouldn't be there, and then a few seconds of explosive pace and skill and it's a goal. FCB vs. PSG tomorrow should be special.

is there not a messi v ronaldo thread?
why is ronaldo so far ahead in this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Best_FIFA_Football_Awards_2017#The_Best_FIFA_Men.27s_Player

i can understand voting for ronaldo but it's very weird how many people don't have messi in their top three. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-5010351/Some-unique-vote-choices-FIFA-Best-awards.html

mizzell, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 16:52 (eight years ago)

ronaldo quite a bit ahead of messi the last couple of years. and it seems like there's a lot of voting for guys you play with - e.g. neither messi nor ronaldo voting for each other

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Tuesday, 24 October 2017 21:32 (eight years ago)

i feel a bit bad for messi in that he reached a final with argentina (or dragged argentina to a final) 3 summers in a row - winning none of them - and so is probably a little fatigued. but c ron def been the better of the two of late.

-_- (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 24 October 2017 21:36 (eight years ago)

It's all bollocks. People voting for Marcelol and Kroos over Messi is challops obv.

Also don't agree Cron has "def been better of the two of late".

But it all doesn't matter etc.

Inter Miami attended a White House reception on Thursday to celebrate winning MLS Cup for the first time in club history, with captain Lionel Messi presenting a gift to President Donald Trump.

Messi entered the East Room alongside Trump and Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas and later handed the president a signature Miami pink soccer ball. Trump also received a Miami jersey and watch from Mas and head coach Javier Mascherano.
