A new 30 Rock thread because I can't find the old one

I'm oddly sad about this show ending tonight. Watched the pilot and a couple other early favorites last night. What a gift 30 Rock has been.

Clay, Thursday, 31 January 2013 15:41 (eleven years ago) link

It has.

I might cry when the credits roll tonight.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 January 2013 15:44 (eleven years ago) link

Hey Rockheads, I have a question. I watched season 1 when it aired, but didn't keep up with it after that. We've started watching the whole thing, 3-4 episodes per evening, and are just about to season 2. Should I watch the finale tonight or hold off to watch it in order with the rest of the last season?

Dr. Alfred P. Falfa (WilliamC), Thursday, 31 January 2013 15:52 (eleven years ago) link

I'd hold off, personally. I don't know what all is going to happen, but I imagine there will be a lot of callback story lines and gags that you'll need to know about to find as funny.

If the finale doesn't contain the phrase "shut it down!" I will be disappointed.

I had no idea that this season was truncated and as such only realized it's ending about a week ago--I can't quite believe it.

so fucking perfect

of all the running gags to end on, Immortal Kenneth is probably the best choice they could've made

The flying cars were the most perfect detail.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 05:03 (eleven years ago) link

omg and Immortal Characters were on Kenneth's list of TV No No Words!

GothamMoms or something like that.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 05:21 (eleven years ago) link

I thought the end joke was that the whole show was imagined by some future person (a nod the St Elsewhere's ending). But maybe making that person Kenneth says otherwise.

nickn, Friday, 1 February 2013 06:25 (eleven years ago) link

The girl in the chair was Liz's granddaughter, right?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 06:32 (eleven years ago) link

Yes.

Big Sambola & The Tailspinners (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 1 February 2013 06:44 (eleven years ago) link

yeah nickn, it was a reference to that, but the gag is not that Kenneth imagined it, but that LL's great-granddaughter pitched 30 Rock to Kenneth as a show idea in like 2120 or whatever (and of course Kenneth is still president of NBC because, as established, he is immortal)

Women, Fire, and Dangerous Zings (silby), Friday, 1 February 2013 06:54 (eleven years ago) link

I didn't notice the daughter, or don't remember it now in any event.

Good ending, just the right amount of sentimentality.

nickn, Friday, 1 February 2013 08:10 (eleven years ago) link

btw re "callback," this already means something else in showbiz, and u sound like a fucking producer when you use it -- find another word.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Friday, 1 February 2013 08:19 (eleven years ago) link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callback_(comedy)

A callback, in terms of comedy, is a joke which refers to one previously told in the set. The second joke is often presented in a different context than the one which was used in the initial joke.

In television, the term callback has come to mean a joke or line that refers to a previous episode (or sometimes, in rare cases, movies). Particularly in earlier sitcoms - though even until the early 1990s — callbacks were rare and often frowned upon by networks, because they threaten to isolate a viewer who is new to the series, or who missed episodes. Seinfeld was one of the first sitcoms to regularly use callbacks in its scripts, although on a level which would often be missed or disregarded by viewers. More recently 30 Rock has employed callbacks to reference fictitious movies and television programs created within the show. Arrested Development became well known by fans for its regular use of callbacks throughout all of its episodes.[3] Of course, the line between a callback and simple continuity can sometimes be ambiguous. The opening sequence of the season nineteen premiere of The Simpsons calls back to the events in the movie.

President Keyes, Friday, 1 February 2013 12:10 (eleven years ago) link

Morbz can tell there weren't callbacks in any episode of this show because he didn't see any of them

( ͡° ͜ʖ͡°) (sic), Friday, 1 February 2013 14:11 (eleven years ago) link

(a nod the St Elsewhere's ending).

There was still definitely a nod to this, but then the reveal was that it wasn't a dream.

Lyrics:

The Irma Luhrman-Merman murder
Turned the bird's word lurid
The whir and the purr of a twirler girl
She would the world were demurer
The insurer's allure
For valor were pure Kari Wuhrer
One fervid whirl over her turgid error
Rural juror
Rural juror
I will never forget you
Rural juror
I'll always be glad I met you
Rural juror

I will never forget you
Rural juror
I'll always be glad I met you
Rural juror (x2)
These were the best days of my flerm.

This was so great. Probably the best show of the past decade. I really loved how Jenna only got sad when they were taking away her mirror. That shot of her looking at the mirror as it was being taken off the wall, with the weird subtle shifting perspective framing her in it, was really quite a beautiful way to show her world crashing down around her.

one probably shouldn't bust out the dictionary defense without proper vetting since 2a is the definition being used here (ie, recall as a noun), particularly with the synonym list for recall containing "flash back (to)", "hark back (to)" and "harken back (to)"
