A blood test during the middle of the night is helpful to ensure that no dramatic falls or rises are occurring with the blood glucose level. The aim is a gently falling blood glucose to no lower than 3 mmol/l (54 mg/dl) during the night. Below this and down further may give the bounce back effect of a following high blood glucose level, as the body releases stored blood glucose.
