my friend sent for an application for the women's organization (order of the eastern star) but never sent it in. it was hand-typed and on some embossed masonic stationery, but only 1 page long.

i think you definitely need 2+ recommendations from masons and having a family member at least helps (if it's not required, i'm not sure).

Under the United Grand Lodge of England, there are 330,000 Freemasons, meeting in 8,644 lodges. There are separate Grand Lodges for Ireland (which covers north and south) and Scotland, with a combined membership of 150,000. Worldwide, there are probably 5 million members.

I wonder if "once a mason, always a mason"? My dad is/used to be one, but isn't active at all in it anymore. I've never asked him about it, because I figured if he told me he'd have to kill me (or sign me up).

I heard women cannot become Masons, but instead are something really pansy-assed like 'serendipity daughters' or some such bullshit. I would like to be a Mason for the accouterments, but the time I spent as a Fake Mason ("mormon") was not so hot. So. No OTO for me????

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

RAINBOW GIRLS!!!!!!
I was one for a few weeks when I was 12 or 13. Several of my friends were in it, so I joined up. Then I got weirded out and quit. You wear a long white dress, walk around a big room in specific formation, read passages from the Bible and then plan the next meeting. Refreshments.

I was just staying in a hotel where they were having a Masons/Rainbow Girls shindig. Brought it all back.

John E. Smoke (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 01:53 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not that atheists are bad people... we just can't trust them.

Keep in mind that nobody really speaks for Masonry. A lot of Masons say a lot of things on a lot of websites, but they are all personal opinions. There are official rules that certain lodges don't even follow, such as the in California that for some reason took it upon themselves to exclude Liber Legis from being placed on the altar, which goes directly against a major rule against religious intolerance. The geniuses at that lodge read LL and decided that it denied a higher power, which is not really the case at all.

I did a temporary job working for Toye, Kenning and Spencer in Bedworth near Coventry one summer. They are a big supplier of everything for Masons. I had to (by hand - they had no computers) stock take boxes and boxes of various types of aprons, masonic literature, tie pins, cufflinks etc.

That was a very weird job. Everybody there had this funny evangelical vibe about them and vehemently denied being a Mason when they clearly were.

libcrypt, Thursday, 15 May 2008 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Is it true that a subscription to quasi-spiritual Deep Wonder About The Universe is enough to qualify for masonry, instead of a proper religion? I mean, I've been a boy scout and have sort of had my fill of non-denominational anti-atheist fraternal organizations, but part of me wants to be a mason real bad.

Guy selling me on masonicism told me about the only female mason who witnessed 3rd level rites and shit and when they found her they had to kill her or make her a 3rd level mason so they were kind I guess.

Was he from the Grand Lodge of Lagos, Nigeria?

Shot on 8mm Video, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I've always wondered about it. I drive past their monster huge temple every morning. My wife and I were married in the Albert Pike Hotel. One of my grandfathers was a Shriner and the other grandfather "took some classes". It sounds a lot like Scientology, except for the fact that they do control everything.

Still, to be on the other side of a secret society for once and not behind Rowdy Roddy Piper's sunglasses is somewhat appealing to my curiosity. That, and the Masonic temples are usually the only places to get a drink in dry rural counties.

Tom D., Friday, 16 May 2008 14:31 (sixteen years ago) link

The Rotary Club is pretty rad because they had a barbecue in the park across the street from my house. They hired a trombone quartet and asked me if I wanted hamburgers, which I did, because I am secretly Jughead.

They seem like Lion's Club minus eyesight mission to me.

Abbott, Friday, 16 May 2008 17:31 (sixteen years ago) link

The Shriner grandfather told me that I could never be a Mason since I had been baptized Catholic and therefore could possibly spill some beans in confession. He encouraged me to seek out the Knights of Columbus instead.
