Considering taking a job in Hawaii- NEED ADVICE

Hiya.

I currently live in Chicago and may be getting an offer for a position in Honolulu very soon.

What do I need to know?

I know that cost of living is like 30% higher there, but is a 30% raise really a normal thing to ask when relocating from the mainland? What is the best way to look for places to RENT (not buy) if i'm going to be working in downtown honolulu? Is it feesable to move large (1,000 - 2,000 LPs & 12's) record collection there?

What is the city of Honolulu like? Culture? Nightlife? Traffic? Nearby parks and whatnot?

A simple link to a non-ILX board dealing with this kind of discussion would be great, too.

Also- can anyone help me decipher everything that goes into moving a dog to Hawaii? 120 days quarantine or something?

Besides that, what I actually do know about Hawaii is a guy I used to work with studied there for almost a year before freaking out and having to come back to CA. He said the constant 75-80° year-round temperature and feelings of being "stuck" on an island really got to him after a few months, and that it's a known phenomenon.

i'm familiar with Island Fever...

the no-seasonal-change thing would be a shock to my system, but i lived in tucson for most of my adolescence, so i'm familiar.

i'm quite an adaptable person, and while i appreciate the humor, i really was looking for practical advice on a dollars-to-dollars level.

My dad's wife has family that lives around the horn from Honolulu in Kailua. I can solicit info if you want; she's there a couple of times a year.
