The Ugly Animal Preservation Society is a comedy night with a conservation twist founded in Great Britain by biologist, writer and TV presenter Simon Watt to raise the profile of animal species which lack traditional aesthetically appealing characteristics.[1][2]

Simon compares each evening where between six and eight comedians each have ten minutes to champion a different ugly endangered species. At the end of each evening the audience votes to elect one of the species. Previous performers have included Ellie Taylor, Helen Arney, Dan Schrieber, Sarah Bennetto, Suzi Ruffell, Steve Cross, Dean Burnett and Iszi Lawrence.

Current ugly animal mascots include: for London, the proboscis monkey; for Cambridge, forms of endangered sea slug; for Bristol and Cheltenham, the three toed sloth; for Winchester, the Titicaca water frog; for Brighton, the naked mole-rat and for Newcastle the dugong.

I had a grapefruit vodka drink it was good

I don't really do cocktails but I had a cucumber & elderflower "ginjito" the other week that was amazing

I've heard it argued that the "art of mixology" is dead in the uk because of the weights & measures act: bartenders are legally obliged to use 25ml measures of spirits, which apparently kills the improvisational/inspired/intuitive thing cocktail makers allegedly have goin on. this seemed plausible at the time but now that I'm a sciencebro savage I think that's bs, you can just adjust the concs of everything else et voila, that's prob a better skill than just sloshing a load of booze in

I tried getting drunk and it didn't do anything to numb the pain. Maybe I'm just not cut out to be an alcoholic.

I don't think alcohol is going to do anything for me rn and the idea of waking up with a hangover in a Trump administration is a new horror that I hadn't even considered. I should probably stop drinking altogether and send the savings to immigrant rights orgs.

alcoholic tendencies: I settled in at about 9pm (et) last night, content to watch the latest episode of Westworld on one screen while perpetually reloading the NYT election stats page on another. Around the point it became clear that Trump was closing in on all key battleground states, I relocated to my local bar to be amongst friends and watch the rest unfold. I've been drinking steadily ever since - pacing myself, mind, but if ever there were occasion to indulge unsound habits in the interest of cushioning the DEVASTATING BLOW OF REALITY, it's today.
