netflix vs. greencine

The Netflix site is looking more and more like a Blockbuster store everyday. It's quite sickening, and I need out.

Greencine was my first choice, but there are two things stopping me:

1) Netflix's shipping time is extremely fast, which is always a plus.

2) Netflix has started carrying Eraserhead, Grey Gardens, and a bunch of other films they once deemed "too rare" (though, inexplicably, Judex, Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Begotten, Les Vampires, Two-Lane Blacktop, and To Sleep With Anger are all on my Netflix "Saved" list).

I haven't used Greencine in quite a while, so I don't know what they're like these days. Are they offering any rarities that Netflix doesn't carry? Why might it be a good choice to switch from Netflix to Greencine?

There isn't really a good reason to switch to Greencine unless you ONLY want to see anime and non-US DVDs. I guess you could supplement it with a good video store.

Netflix is *still* pretty hard to beat, IMHO, though not perfect obviously.

Greencine has one other thing Netflix doesn't...it carries the 5 Minutes to Live catalog, or at least some of it:

http://www.5minutestolive.com/

I joined Greencine and it's definately not as fast as my pals w/ netflix, but I also dont have enough time to watch movies anyway.

I don't quite understand this objection. Their selection kicks the ass of any Blockbuster I've ever seen. Why does it matter what the site looks like?

"Oh, no - they're advertising the movies that folks want to rent in efforts to make money! CALGON TAKE ME AWAY!"

That 5 Minutes to Live stuff is a bit dodgy, to say the least. I've picked up a couple of things which were 5th or 6th generation copies taken from TV and were probably transferred from PAL to NTSC, many of which are pretty much unwatchable (my copy of Can Hieronymous Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?, for example, is lifted from Bravo and it looks like the set up the camera to record from the TV screen). Their copy of They Live By Night, however, gives good Granger.

That's what I don't undersand either. Who cares if the site looks kind of obnoxious if it offers the same selection of movies?

They have every right to advertise whatever they want. But to me, there's nothing more nausea-inducing than seeing ads glaring all over the fuckin place. The world of commerce demands it, but it doesn't mean I have to stomach it.

I saw They Live By Night on the big screen c/o of a Ray retrospective. Great.

Which is why I use Netflix Freak. I don't see any ads at all.

how long does Netflix Freak work without registering and paying?

what ads are you people talking about? Is my browser opening up different sites for me again than the rest of ILX? The only ads I see are, like, movies. That you can rent. Most of which are being presented in the form of "recommendations" and in fact my Netflix front page is presenting me with a documentary (actually 3 of them, none of them brandy new, which is odd cos I've never rented a documentary from them but whatever), 2 Korean movies, and a Kieslowski right now so it's not like they're shouting out PLEASE RENT "HITCH" STARRING WILL SMITH to every consumer so I'm completely confused by these objections.

Actually, I just realized I'm at work on a PC without ad blocking software installed in my browser so it can't be the magic of my mysterious Mac laptop's browser again.

30 days I think. After using it for a couple days I bought it....

It sounds interesting, worth a try, but I'm not sure if the description they put up makes it sound so significantly better than Netflix's website that I'd want to pay for it--what do you like so much about it?

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 17:29 (7 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, likewise. My Netflix home page at the moment is recommending Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Sopranos, Touch of Evil and White Heat, none of which offend me. I'm still confused by what the problem is supposed to be.

i dont have netflix, but my roomate does. There are plenty of movies on there too obscure for me to know about, so netflix seems more than enough for the average movie watcher. what is this greencine you speak of?

If I weren't worried about speed of arrival, I'd sign up with NicheFlix over GreenCine.
