Cheer Up, It Might Never Happen!

People have said this to me all my life and I always have to explain that just because I look bored and miserable it doesn't mean I am, it's just the way my face is. Still, it could be worse I could be Orla Guerin, surely the most miserable person on the planet. I mean, I know there's hardly ever much good news coming out of the Middle East, but, honestly, a little smile wouldn't hurt every now and again:

I could punch people who say this to me. I just want to shout at them "It's already DID!!!"

Sigh. I should shut up and get off the interweb when I start to feel like this. Really. I'll be processing credit card errors if anyone wants me.

But do worse things actually happen at sea?

You enjoying yourself Orla? Well, tell your fa... oh, you aren't

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh I dunno, there's a kind of cynical grin half-forming itself there.

ugh. i get this all of the time, or else things like "let's see a smile on that face."

if i do manage to force a grin, it's usually because i'm imagining throttling the busybody in question.

WE MEAN WELL

stevie (stevie), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, leave us to wallow in our misery and despair! If you don't mind!!

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:25 (eighteen years ago) link

(enter Amanda Platell, striding purposely down the street in her stilettoes)

"Cheer up NOW you socialist saddo or I'll give you the biggest fucking hiding of your life!"

Now there was an easy choice...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I HATE HATE HATE this or anything remotely like this.

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a dog whose natural demeanour is to look glum, even when he's very happy. This has made me more aware of the fact that people can be that way too (so I've stopped asking sad-looking people if they are okay).

C J (C J), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:30 (eighteen years ago) link

What's worse is when you're smiling, exactly the same people will say something like 'no need for you to look so smug'. I get confused, and sometimes I just don't know how to look.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Wear a back-to-front balaclava at all times, Nick. It's the only way.

C J (C J), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Except in South London, where the response is usually "who YOU fuckin laughin at innit" followed by (insert fatal weapon of your choice).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:32 (eighteen years ago) link

i especially like this being said to me when I really am down about something but the other person is obviously too self involved to take time out to think before they speak.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:34 (eighteen years ago) link

With a face like mine, I should take up poker

Worse things happen beginning with C

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I hope you're not referring to me there...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:38 (eighteen years ago) link

The best I ever had was in our local Aussie eaterie, Gruel. I came in to get a sandwich and the guy behind the counter said "bad day, eh?" I tried to smile at him, but he said "listen, if you're shithouse, don't worry about it, you don't have to cheer up for me". Which cheered me up.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:38 (eighteen years ago) link

'if you're shithouse' ?

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Ha ha, nice one!

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:42 (eighteen years ago) link

'if you're shithouse'

My Australian slang experts tell me it means "if you're not feeling too good".

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I always get this, I have a miserable face I think.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:01 (eighteen years ago) link

At least when I get this, it usually is when I am sulking/fuming/crying/otherwise looking utterly horrible.

My personal favourite is when men - often elderly black men in Brixton - shout at me in the street to give them a smile. I'm not sure if they're being friendly or ironic.

Mrs. Cranky (From Crankytown) (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:32 (eighteen years ago) link

:( all they ever ask me for is spare change

ken c (ken c), Monday, 15 August 2005 15:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I always say this to people. I assumed it cheered them up!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 15 August 2005 15:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I used to get told 'Smile' a lot. It made me very angry. It was usually when I wasn't even that miserable. It's just my face.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 15 August 2005 15:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I wonder if this will put a smile on Marcello's face?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 15 August 2005 15:30 (eighteen years ago) link

ken c (ken c), Monday, 15 August 2005 15:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Hahaha. Kate, you and I must be on some kind of trans-Atl wavelength today because that always happens to me. My neighborhood is mostly BWI and it's always the older men hanging around on the street who say "let's see your pretty smile" etc etc ad nauseum. Of course, this is to be preferred (barely) to having them ask if they can take me home, or the observation of a few weeks ago: "damn girl, your ass looks like steak on a plate -- i'd eat that shit".

Should there be a thread for "Most Creative/Disturbing Catcalls"?

And virtually the ONLY person there speaking in favour of spanking is my darling Amanda P...oh, never mind psychotherapy or lithium or bereavement counselling, the best and quickest cure for my problems would surely be to go over the Platell knee and get what's coming...

THWACK!

"That's for being horrible to (insert ILx poster of your choice)"

THWACK!!

"That's for not coming to Poptimism!"

THWACK!!!

"That's for only talking to the same four people at FAPs!"

THWACK!!!!

"Shall I give you a taste of the rewards you'll get if you reform and become a flourishing human being once again?"
