"I am not interested in making people uncomfortable, but at the same time I don't have an interest in paintings that are truly passive. The best paintings are ones that require an active, discerning viewer."

anthony - the book! How goes the book? Do you need us to whip you with nettles to stimulate your skull custard, or chain you to your keyboard with your knees roped together? ILE's services in that direction are very reasonably priced, I hear.

I just don't get a lot out of most photorealism.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 01:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, outside of awe at technique, anyway.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 01:55 (eighteen years ago) link

you're welcome to post images that you actually do like

Magin 'Pedro' Johnson's magical AIDS thrfit store (dr g), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 02:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I have, just not recently. And of course, there's plenty of non-photorealism posted anyway.

But, here's a couple...

Jim Hodges

Alfred Jensen

I like photorealism when it has a strong surrealist element (ala David Lynch movies or Gregory Crewdson photographs) - something just a little off in the perspective or colors that alters your perception.

One of my favorites (crap photo, in person the blacks are much richer) -

The Al Columbia is from one of his Zero Zero pieces, "Amnesia" I think.

I need to check out some of Rob's songs -- I haven't been keeping up to date at all.

This thread is great. I've been avoiding it for a few weeks because of overwork and a bad mood, but I'm glad I checked it out.

Those Torok paintings are tiny, less than 3 inches tall. On my screen, they appear bigger than life size.

Looking through a back issue of Artforum, I noticed some interesting abex stuff by a person called Suling Wang. On google, I find that there is a Suling Wang who is an abstract painter, and there is a Suling Wang who is an illustrator, primarily of children's books. I suspect these are different people, but am not entirely sure.

via art in america:
He begins with a reproducton of an erotic Ukiyo-e print, cuts it up into fragments too small to convey narrative information, recasts those fragments in axially symmetric "inkblots," and silkscreens the resulting grid-based pattern onto the picture plane.
