My wife and I scrambled the descent/ascent of Black Canyon south rim in flip flops, it was actually pretty hilarious. What's amazing, besides the painted wall and all that, is that the canyon bottom is about this wide | |

Lassen Volcanic Natl. Park. We used to go there pretty regularly when we lived in Redding.

Bumpass Hell (volcanic vents, smells just peachy):

I went here (Ocean City, MD) for a short vacation this week. (Sadly, it was too chilly still to go in the water.)

awesome series of the great NW gabbneb. There are lots of, er, Weiners in that part of the world; my dad's side of the family were among the original settlers of the Yakima valley. So many beautiful places, so little time. And while I've spent a lot of time in the SW (except for New Mexico) I can't bring myself to say it's as beautiful as the NW overall.

don weiner, Sunday, 22 May 2005 00:33 (eighteen years ago) link

i've lived in the NW. you'll get no argument from me that it's one of the most gorgeous places on earth.

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 May 2005 01:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Exciting history, Don.

I think, gareth, that you would like to go to the black rock desert of nevada.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 22 May 2005 02:26 (eighteen years ago) link

gareth would like tucson, very much

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 May 2005 02:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I especially like the first photo of Arizona. My sister says the view of the sky is amazing.

I like the photos of Sahale Arm, North Cascades; Glacier Peak and North Cascades; and Olympic National Park.

youn, Sunday, 22 May 2005 04:47 (eighteen years ago) link

also if we're pimping Arizona we probably shouldn't forget Sedona

http://www.vrivacations.com/resorts/ssr/ssr-7L.jpg

don weiner, Sunday, 22 May 2005 11:04 (eighteen years ago) link

or Mesa Verde, because it's in the SW, too.

I want to go to Telluride pretty badly.

ihttp://www.flyaboveall.com/tel118.jpg

don weiner, Sunday, 22 May 2005 11:08 (eighteen years ago) link

The red rocks around sedona (and even moreso in Oak Creek Canyon to the north) are very nice (tho not particularly outstanding), but their wildness is compromised by Sedona and its dud jeep-tour and crystal-worship culture.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 22 May 2005 17:13 (eighteen years ago) link

otm

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 May 2005 17:23 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd also add to that the cliched art culture, overpriced real estate, and invasionary spas. I'd rather go to the Badlands myself (or a bunch of places in Utah), but Sedona isn't ruined yet. The baby boomers might be able to accomplish that in the next couple of decades though.

don weiner, Sunday, 22 May 2005 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

there are places near sedona which aren't all jeep-touristy, new-agey, though. but if you really wanna get that type of landscape without the imprint of yuppy culture, go up north to s. utah.
