i see now!

tasty. esp. with alcohol in it and whipped cream on top!

Yes, it's even more fantastic with some irish cream.

i havent had coffee nearly 2 years. or anything with caffiene, for that matter. but i do remember seriously loving vietnamese coffee and my stovetop espresso pot.

this stuff (the hazelnut and cappucino flavors, anyway) is the BEST. also low-fat! I have been totally addicted to these for 3 years now:

My favorite summer pre club fix up. No sugar, don't be daft just a pot of coffee in a capacious wine glass, with lots of ice and some cream.

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Best Iced coffee that I ever had though, was in the Indian Coffee House Shimla Himachal Pradesh.

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:37 (nineteen years ago) link

The only bad thing about iced coffee is that I suck up huge glasses of it in like 10 seconds.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:38 (nineteen years ago) link

jordan, yes, that was my problem too! during the summer, id make a ton of espresso, throw it into a huge pitcher with ice and refrigerate it. however, it would disappear in like, 2 seconds.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:42 (nineteen years ago) link

yes, and sometimes too much milk in the summer. Milk was a bad choice!

iced coffee with just a touch of milk or cream for color is the best drink.

Jordan, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:50 (fifteen years ago) link

but it's odd i can't have my hot coffee with sugar anymore! too syrupy. just milk. but the way you can taste the crystals when it's iced!

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:50 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't know it really competes with iced tea. which is ALSO delicious with some cream.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:51 (fifteen years ago) link

i used to really enjoy the jumbo-sized iced coffee with milk & sugar but now the idea of the sucking down cold sugar & cream doesn't really sound refreshing at all. for the past few summers i've been drinking more iced tea than iced coffee.

anyway, the best places do this with frozen coffee cubes instead of ice.

Ed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:15 (fifteen years ago) link

but it's odd i can't have my hot coffee with sugar anymore!

iced coffee is brewed double strength so that it isn't watered down when the ice melts, maybe this has something to do with it?

it was never around when i was a kid, but sometime in the 90s it became a phenomenon

it's been around forever, my dad used to make pitchers of it in the 70s and i know his father, who died just after i was born, was a huge fan.

Black coffee just means no milk not no sugar but they shouldn't be putting any sweetener in it unless you ask for it anyway.

Treesh, I wd make you some but I don't have a blender but if you want to get ~fancy~ some time I will come over and make horchata w/ yr Vitamix and then we can drink it w/ coffee from my Aeropress because we are young and white.

EMA Sumac (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:34 (nine years ago) link

ENBB GET AN AEROPRESS!!!! It makes espresso-strength coffee that is not *technically* espresso but is v close, is v v delicious, is $30; I bought it solely for making iced americanos and it's what I used to make spresschata

EMA Sumac (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:35 (nine years ago) link

I have an aeropress! I can do that!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:35 (nine years ago) link

I completely forgot that it's basically espresso. YAY!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:36 (nine years ago) link

The prob abt this drink is that to do it right you have to make the horchata and you should really do it well (i.e. use a good rice like jasmine or basmati! go to the mexican grocer and get the flaky cinnamon! add almonds or whatever!), and it really is an enormous pain the ass to strain it, like SERIOUSLY a pain, but when you are done, oh! it is so worth it.

i'm definitely scheming on the dirty horchata, probably via aeropress...is good store-bought horchata a thing?

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 14:06 (nine years ago) link

tbh the Rice Dream horchata is p tasty and the packaging looks like a game show which is v nice to see when you open yr fridge, I bet this wd absolutely do in a pinch, but it does not compare to yr local taqueria in terms of that fresh and floral flavor that you get w/ homemade horchat

EMA Sumac (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 14:09 (nine years ago) link

whatever you do don't call it an horchatté bcz that's stupid

four years pass...

weird! stevie is coming back to chicago four years later and i am here with an unrelated question

my question: i would like to make the sort of iced coffee concentrate that you let drip through something overnight -- maybe in a glass or plastic container? This is all the information I have about the type of iced coffee I am attempting to make because it can't be that hard -- i just don't have the proper apparatus or vocab required to search for it. i want to google it but i don't know the correct search terms.

ideas?

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:46 (five years ago) link

nm
i got it bc my mr looked it up -- it's the "toddy cold brew system"

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link

it's a cold toddy.

I only drink ice coffee all year round and just recently learned that this is a gay male "thing" (according to buzzfeed). I am really confused by that premise. Do gay men like cold drinks?

Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:49 (five years ago) link

xpost. If you get a cold toddy just make sure you have everything really sealed up before you leave it overnight. I used to use one a lot and it's very annoying to wake up to a spill of half brewed coffee.

Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:50 (five years ago) link

Thank you!!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:53 (five years ago) link

I looked it up and it is the toddy cold brew system that I have. It's fine. It uses a lot of coffee though. And it has a rubber plug in the bottom that you pull the morning after the grounds have been soaking. That plug is the thing you have to make sure is jammed in right or else it leaks. I think we just stopped using it because having a carafe of ice coffee around meant we were drinking that carafe in one go.

Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:58 (five years ago) link

good to know
i guess you can make a larger amount by just repeating the process until you have enough to fill the vessel you wish to fill?

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 17:59 (five years ago) link

if it is indeed this one https://www.amazon.com/Toddy-THM-Cold-Brew-System/dp/B0006H0JVW

it comes with that carafe that fits the same amount as in the toddy and supposedly it makes a concentrate that you are supposed to dilute with water but we never really diluted it and drank it straight.

Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:03 (five years ago) link

ah. another valuable fact!
spouse received a large bottle of this stuff (as a concentrate) as a gift and from the size of the bottle it must have taken several batches. now i do not need to rely on anyone else to make it, i can do it myself. i was trying various cold brew ideas and wasting a bunch of coffee NOT making this specific type and now that i have the vital information of [thing used to make it] i can proceed.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:07 (five years ago) link

I am sure you could rig up a similar contraption on your own. This is the filter that fits into the bottom if you could figure out a similar vessel, it's kind of all you really need.

https://toddycafe.com/shop-product/15/Toddy-Filters

Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:11 (five years ago) link

ohhhh and I see they have paper filters now too.

Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:12 (five years ago) link

Yeah, it's always bothered me that the only important part of that 'system' is the really thick filter. Not that the whole thing is that expensive, but it seems like you could DIY it if you were so inclined.

I also drink mostly concentrate with a tiny bit of water for propriety's sake.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:17 (five years ago) link

i tried and thought i could but the experiments were getting expensive
my goal was to make the stuff we had in the bottle, so i needed to know how that was done. my cheap a$$ was wasting coffee :(

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:17 (five years ago) link

i hate giving in to the gadget but i felt i had to this time

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:17 (five years ago) link

Yeah, it totally is easy to use. I think we've had two of them (they were located in different places) for about ten years now and you may need to replace filters or the rubber stopper every so often but that's it really.

Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:31 (five years ago) link

I got a growler of bourbon barrel cold brew as a gift, and it was so good that I've since refilled it a couple times (from a place in Milwaukee).

idk if cold brew concentrate is the thing you're talking about here tho

goole, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 19:04 (five years ago) link

it is
i tried to make regular cold brew and it was ok but just tastes like cold coffee, not particularly strong or flavorful

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 19:20 (five years ago) link

Idk y’all I make cold brew by like putting grounds and water in a jar, it works pretty good. If I were gonna get some apparatus I’d get one of those three foot high Japanese things that drips over the grounds drop by drop just to make it maximally impractical.
