man bags

what sort of bags do the men of ilx use?

I used to wear a backpack, but they are so uncouth. I now have a litte satchel thing, but it is just too small for my manly needs. I have pondered getting a messenger bag, but I have not fallen so deeply into depravity that I will allow myself to be accessorized like some hipster scum.

brands, types, links, any help would be appreciated.

The only time I can't find everything I need into pants/jacket is when I've got a ton of booze, and then a plastic bag filled with bottles/cans is the classiest option.

I've got a small Ampac messenger bag. I used to have bigger, less hipster scum-ish bag, but I kept turning around and knocking things over when I had it on. This forces me to travel light anyway...a book or two, a couple cds, iPod, and drumsticks.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's the copy of Blankets that puts Jim's bag squarely into hipster territory.

These two bags cover all my needs in between work, grad school and the NYC DC commute, plus carryon for random trips to visit relatives or fight in the streets of London:

eBags Weekender Convertible

eBags Remix Backpack

I honestly think these things are worth about twice the price, for what I've put them through so far. Who gives a shit if they come with ridiculous titles, it's not like they're written on the things. To be honest, the lack of a popular name brand was a kind of a selling point for me.

TOMBOT, Monday, 24 January 2005 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got a green Dickies bag. It holds a book, a bottle of scent, a CD player and a few rubbers, and it's got a little zip pocket to hold any pharmaceutics. It's perfect. I also left it down the pub last night after a pub quiz, so I've got to trek back into the middle of Oxford at lunch today to collect it, assuming it's still there. Grrrr.

i don't see what's so bad about messenger bags. they're roomy and usually pretty comfortable to carry around. so what if some guy with tight pants and carefully messy hair is also carrying one?

I have 2 of these in red and black. They have nice side pockets to put cell phone, keys, flask. Bag searchers never check the side pockets. Plus, if it breaks you can take it to the store and they should give you a replacement bag to use while it is being repaired. This may just be the NY store though.

I can't find a picture of mine. It's a Levis brown-corduroy record bag, basically. I used to really love it. Then I left it on a chair in a bar and this guy I really hate sat down on it for a very long time, and the next day I found the front face marred by a wide crusty-white stain that bears unfortunate resemblance to a great big load of dried-up semen. I blame guy-I-hate, but what could the stain possibly be?

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I have had messenger bags since early high school. Don't be concerned with the hipster stigma. They are roomy, keep your hands free, and you are aware of where it is on your body most of the time. I have had people try to go through my backpack while it is on me at shows so many times.

i have a jack spade bag also, in dark blue. the only thing I don't like about them is that you can't buy the internal pouches seperately (all the bags are basically the same, but they have different modular internal pouches that make one a laptop bag, or a "dad" bag (for diapers, etc). Still mine was really cheap and they're very nicely made.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(Further funny aspect to the story: guy-I-hate is a fellow writing student, working on a novel that's very very sex-obsessed, in a very frat-boyish way, and it's partly about homosexuality, and so someone else I know tried to avoid writing it off as just boorish by overreading and theorizing that the main character was in fact coming to terms with his own homosexuality -- hence the aggressive opposite-direction coarseness. And then a month later the guy sits down on my bag and evidently leaks something semen-like all over it.)

I carry a BOX!

Actually, an aluminum briefcase that prompts idiots to ask me if I have nuclear secrets, mob money, drugs, bombs etc in there.

Plusses - no one thinks it's a purse, it's pretty good at protecting its contents from shocks, moisture, etc.

Minuses - see above, also you have to set it down to open it, and it keeps one hand occupied unless you set it down.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's official, I have the perfect bag, and I can't seem to find even a reference to anything similar online.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

i have a leather samsonite flap-over briefcase. it's not the greatest in the world, but it's pretty damn nice. ideally it would be more like my last briefcase, which had a big pocket with zipover and a little paperstash flat pocket, along with frontpockets for pens, etc. This one has the main compartment divided nearly down the middle, which makes it harder to carry ridiculously huge quantities of books, etc. Also, it's not expandable. The shoulderstrap makes it rilly as comfortable as any messenger bag if not moreso+more stylish+ actually better for organizing carrying lots of rectangular papers and books and etc. Also absurdly durable.

Secundus Clover (s_clover), Friday, 5 August 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

haha eth!

people, we have "two strap" technology now. try it, it's amazingly comfortable. and you won't be an asymmetrical laughingstock 15 years from now. trust me, i know.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 August 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Whatever you do, Nabisco, make sure to transfer your buttons from the old bag to the new one. (Urban Outfitters sells a similar product to what you already own; however it is made by Levi's and I fear it is not exactly a record bag. I myself have been debating in investing in one of the curduroy affairs for the past year--I am always stymied however by the choice of color.)

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 6 August 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

josh, i also have a beat-up blue jansport regular backpack i use for particularly large loads, when i have an errand to do and don't want to empty my regular bag, etc.

the problem with this so-called "two strap" technology is if you have a big thing jutting from your back then you're always bumping into people or things or at risk (as noted) of getting somebody looking thru yr stuff without you realizing.

Secundus Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 6 August 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

also i remember when "messenger bag" rilly only meant those odd-shaped actual messenger bags with the three colors (usually) and the funky straps and etc. Now it seems to mean any satchel with a flap at all. My briefcase is really a leather messenger bag!

Mary, mine is made by Levis! And may have been purchased at Urban Outfitters, though it's hard to remember -- it was like a full day bag search that led to this thing. I'll have to check again. I'm half-okay with the one you linked to, except that I like the actual record-sized cut of mine -- not only for the purpose of carrying records, but also because I like the perfect-square dimensions of the thing.

I use a Dickies DJ bag for most purposes. It's nondescript so you can put your computer in a sleeve and then in the bag. Plus it holds about 27 12" records, which is good if you live in Southern California and are record shopping during the day (you can't just leave them in the car, they'll warp.)

It occurs to me that my absolute favorite thing about my current bag is that it has large external pockets. The top flops over like a messenger bag, but it has the usual zippered pocket in front; that's where the CD player goes. What's super-cool, though, is that the back side -- the against-your-torso side -- is a large, open pocket, and I tend to put more stuff in there than I put inside the bag itself. (Right now: assorted papers, one book, one magazine, a pack of gum, my work keycard, and three promo CDs.) I'm not sure I'd be able to handle having to actually lift up the front flap of a messenger bag -- which is kind of awkward to do while you're wearing the thing -- just so stash whatever magazine I was reading on the train.

Any good shops right in Central London, Notting Hill or preferably round Greenwich.

Yes I've been putting off actually replacing my (10+ year-old) black puma bag despite being on one strap for six months (not that it matters as I'm looking for a satchel or shoulder or er..I'm lost already) but now the hole is getting bigger and bigger so I'm just using trying to fit books/whatever else in side-pockets and the extra pocket.

Anywhere with a good selection would be good.

I inherently mistrust any bags with names, regardless of the gender, so my opinion of those bags is coloured by that.

However, I just have to say that at the British Museum, earlier this week, I saw Harris tweed man-bags which reduced me to a state of abject man-bag lust. They were roomy, too, enough to carry an A4 sketchbook, which is the only complaint I have about my otherwise perfect canvas satchel.
