Player 'black-out' over racism

Madrid - Players with Spanish first division club Getafe could play their next match with blackened faces in a protest against racism, Spanish media reported on Wednesday.

Getafe president Angel Torres told Punto Radio that he would propose the "black-out" to his players ahead of the club's weekend fixture with Villareal.

The move follows racist chants hurled by Getafe supporters at Barcelona's Cameroon international Samuel Eto'o during a La Liga clash.

Torres put the disturbances down to "three or four crazy fans" he said he would ban from the ground if it was found out that they had season tickets.

"We reject racism and xenophobia and we will show it.

"I will propose to my players to paint their faces black for the next championship match which we play at home," Torres said.

Racism most recently reared its ugly head in Spain in October when Spanish football coach Luis Aragones made a racist comment about Arsenal striker Thierry Henry during a training session.

Last month, several hundred Spanish supporters made monkey chants every time one of England's black players - Ashley Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Jermaine Jenas and Jermain Defoe - touched the ball during the 1-0 loss to Spain in a friendly international in Madrid.

European football governing body Uefa opened an investigation after black players were then racially abused during Real Madrid's Champion's League tie against Bayer Leverkusen last week

So, uh, I guess this didn't happen then.
