the best goal ever

Well, what is the best goal ever scored?Or is it just commonly accepted that Diego Maradona's second goal versus England in 1986 is the best goal of all time?My personal favourites include Mark Hughes' last-minute equaliser in the 1994 FA Cup semi-final for Man U against Oldham - it had a big significance in terms of the season, but apart from that it was a beautiful goal, but I also have to mention Arie Haan's winner for Holland versus Italy in 1978.Pure genius.

Damian, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael Thomas' goal for Arsenal against Liverpool, 26th May 1989. As a gooner (sorry) I don't expect to ever see a more thrilling moment in my footballing lifetime.

Andrew L, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ricardo villa at-^he's round three and ....GOAL^>>not Gazza -^way a jest booted it ower hes heed^>

The late Bryan Moore: 'Its up for grabs NOWWWW" Oh yes, get in. Read it and weep, Scousers.

Will, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That World Cup Brazilian goal when they pass it around for what seems like ages before Pele (?) drills a low sharking, angled shot from 20-odd yards into the far corner. Total Football.

Marco Van Basten's angled volley against the then-USSR in Euro 88 Final,

As aGooner, I hate to say it, but Ryan Giggs solo goal against us in the FA Cup semi-final replay.

Will, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That was Carlos Alberto - Pele played the pass with elegant nonchalance. That goal gives me goosebumps. Nayim from the halfway line too Gooners.Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Jonnie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Roberto Carlos' physics-defying free kick for Brazil in 97... can't remember who it was against. Either that or Nayim from the half way line against the Gooners in the Cupwinners Cup Final in 94-95.

Matt DC, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Man U 5 Spurs 3. Best game ever - two of my most hated teams trying their hardest to lose. hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Will, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry that was off-topic but all this Nayim talk gave me the red mist.

Bergkamp, one touch and in against Argentina 98.

Will, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like playing Charlton at home - you've just got to go for broke in those games don't ya ;)

Jonnie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(sulks) - So, Champion's league next year, Jonny 5? ;-)

Will, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whhops, sorry. Well, that's a lie but I'd best try and be polite. Hoddle against Watford - sublime Cruyff turn and chip over Steve Sherwood.

Jonnie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Matt DC - it was Brazil vs France, which reminded me that France came last in that tournament, didn't they?

Damian, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Vasily Rats for Russia against France in the 1986 World Cup. The most sublime 40 yard screamer - stayed fresh in my mind for the last 15 years.

Mark C, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I remember that goal, Jonny - he took out the whole back four with that turn, didn't he?

Stephen Gerrard - psychologically important second goal at the stroke of half time - England vs. Germany this year.

Will, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Manuel Negrete for Mexico in the '86 World Cup - fantastic scissors kick from the dge of the box. I tried to repeat that a few times on the village green to no great effect.

Jonnie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wasn't he called 'Vasily-Rats-with-the-sweet-left-foot' , Mark?

Will, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I forgot about that Negrete goal too - the Mexican football team always get on my nerves though - they manage to stay ranked among the top football nations by being a giant among minnows and constantly playing minnows, and they'll always frustrate you at the World Cup but they'll never actually get anywhere.

Damian, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

John Hodge skates over the swamp at Home Park, April '93. Slots in the goal (it's now 0-3) and does a neat little forward roll in front of the away end. The sun comes out (really!). Still my happiest footballing moment ever.

Tim, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

John Arne Riise's free-kick against Man Utd three weeks ago. I swear I've never seen a football kicked more powerfully or more sweetly. A phenomenal strike.

And the gooners are still bleating on about '89? Just think about Michael Owen's fantastic second goal at Cardiff last May...that'll wipe the smiles off yer smug faces. :-)

Venga, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dream thread!!

There's a Kazi Deyna goal for Poland that was best goal ever on Foot of God (RIP sob) from the early eighties that was a chuffing marvel, two immaculate crossfield balls, he turns inside one player on the edge of the box and lets fly with a curling ball that for 80% of it's flight looks like it's gonna miss, before curling back to pop in the far top corner.

Trevor Brooking vs Hungary, ball stuck in stanchion = classic

Hadji's goal for Morrocco in the last world cup.

Paul Holland's goal for Chesterfield vs Peterborough, about 4 years ago, controls ball on right thigh, knocking it over oncoming defender, before ball lands hits with left foot into opposite corner, best goal I've ever seen in the flesh.

Rivaldo completes his hat trick vs Valencia in the last game of the season for Barcelona. Takes the ball on his chest, eyes never leave it as it rises, watches it start to fall, throws upper body backwards, feet start rising, is almost inverted as he connects with the ball, which proceeds into the back of the net at a rate of knots. Barca win 3-2, go into champions league, putting Valencia into UEFA cup after being champions leaguerunners up for two seasons. Perhaps Barcas most important goal ever, particularly as they look like they could win the thing this year.

phew, I need to lie down....

chris, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An own goal by Lee Dixon! It was brilliant he lobbed it over Seaman!

james, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I 'm cheating and chosing two.

Cruijff for Ajax against Den Haag in 70s. With first touch, simultaneously controls high, ball + completely bamboozles defender. With second lobs keeper from just inside opponent's half.

Carlos Alberto's during the 1970 World Cup Final against Italy completing a breathtakingly beautiful Brazilian move.

stevo, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The most memorable goal in recent history for me has to be Di Canio's mercurial goal against the cheating Manc scum at the beginning of the year. It knocked them out of the FA Cup, and rightly so.

Di Canio's glacier-cool finishing in the face of flappy slaphead Barthez' clownlike attempts to distract him was poetic justiXor. It was artistry pissing in the face of artifice.

Relive the moment here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/hi/english/football/eng_prem/newsid_114200 0/1142645.stm

Trevor, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a Cruijff one that I've only ever read about that I would give my right arm to see. He runs at the keeper, one on one, as he draws him he starts running away from goal, the keeper runs after him, Cruijff spins and lobs the incredibly bemused keeper.

THAT IS CLASS!

chris, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

4-3, not long to go in the match and the cross wings its way into the box. Suddenly the world goes into slow motion as Pele watchs the ball with the intensity of a hawk. He leaps and performs a stunning bicycle kick, the ball nestles into the bottom corner. Take that Fritz!

Jonnie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jonnie, you've actually described West Ham's last game against Charlton!

Trevor, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey, is Glenn Roeder that hard up he bought Pele? He must be about 60! Just like when the O's played Shilts that time. Enduring image, isennit? Wazzenit?

Will, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was nothing pele-like about the Hammers' defensive frailties on Monday. That Dailly is absolute toilet! And as for old geezers, Winterburn's not too far off his pension.

Trevor, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim - do you support Exeter? Are you from down there?

Best goal. Me - Perkin-Elmer v Insignia-Citrix 1999. Takes bouncing ball on chest with back to goal, 30 yards out. Centre-back trying to kick me up in the air. Slightly miscontrol and ball bounces away from me. Control on toe-end, flick it over his head, spin, let it bounce once and then lash it over the keeper and just under the bar. 1-0!

Best goal seen live - Mickey Hazard - Chelsea v Derby 1987/88. Standing on the edge of the box, he volleys in a corner past Peter Shilton. Our first win in ages, but we still went down via the play- offs.

Dr. C, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dr. C: yes!

Tim, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

... and in the 92/3 season, us slotting goals past P. Shilton was a regular occurrence.

Tim, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about that Roberto Carlos free kick three or four years ago that was heading to the corner flag a quarter of a second after it was kicked but was nestling in the back of the goal a quarter of a second later?

Mark C, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's the one mentioned above - from Le Tournoi in 1997 against France (and comically Fabien Barthez). Any mention of free kicks though has surely got to mention...Johnny 'the hammer' Metgod. If you think John Arne Riise's shot against Man Utd was hit hard check out the bald guy's effort against West Ham from,er, sometime ago. Phil Parkes looked terrified as the ball crashed in over his head.(hands up if you thought I was going to mention *that* free kick from a certain Geordie in 1991).

Jonnie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

/raises hand

chris, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The quality of any goal off the telly is inseparable from the quality of the accompanying commentary. In my view. I shouldn't wonder.

So: Franny Lee's scorcher for Derby C via his old club Manchester City in 75-ish - Barry Davies' greatest moment outside of an Olympic hockey final... "interesting... VERY interesting! Look at his face! Just look at his face!" (Runners up in this category: the late Justin Fashanu's curler vs Liverpool, Feb 1980 at Carrow Road; Ivan Golac for Southampton vs [unknown], possibly the same season, back when they used that rather ugly Football League ball, with the red panelling - anyway, the ball was struck so sweetly, there was no visible rotation in flight. Pick that one out!; Gerald Sinstadt's "ohhhh" as Cyrille Regis crowns WBA's 5-3 Boxing Day victory at Old Trafford, 1978)

Goosebumps: Carlos Alberto, WC final 1970; Bergkamp, WC qf 1998.

Best live: Adrian Heath, EFC vs Norwich City, Dec 1986 - five-man move ends with Kevin Sheedy lifting the ball over Canaries defender for Inchy to volley into roof of net - 4-0! In a soundproof booth in the Main Stand, a youthful Clive Tyldesley growls contentedly.

Michael Jones, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ditto *sulks*

Will, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whaaa you started this thread without me!!! :)

My favourite is Cruijff's chip in his come-back against Haarlem, brilliant vision, skill and just the moment (...and everybody: "BECAUSE YOU WERE IN THE STADIUM YOU BASTARD AS YOU KEEP REMINDING US!")

Raul against Man U. not Raul's shot itself but just the bloody brilliance of Redondo's action and giving it the right conclusion.

Mmm, Raul is actually a machine for scoring brilliant goals, has a knack for amazing chips for which he uses a different technique from de klassieke Cruijff/Bergkamp stijl. This year at home against Anderlecht was a good example (his best maybe the one against Sporting Gijon a couple of seasons ago).

Arie Haan against Italy '78. Every time I see it I can't believe it, the camera barely catches the goal.

Okay last one: Genghini's free-kick for France against Austria in the '82 Worldcup, impossible really but it was even more beautiful than anything Master Platini himself could have come up with.

Oh yeah and me with FIFA99, Bergkamp gets the ball on the midfield, gives a pass, gets the ball back and lets a shot fly from 40 yards which goes right over De Goey. Never been able to repeat it.

Omar, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mexicans remain in the top ten teams by being in the top 50 teams world wide plus leading the world in acting. To transpose to hockey, even the LA Kings dont take that many dives.
I dont blame the ref cause I feel sorry for the poor bugger in the center but watching the replays on the tv is just embarrasing.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Trevor Sinclair for QPR in the FA Cup about 4 or 5 years back. Amazing overhead volley from outside the box lobbing the keeper perfectly, absolutely stunning.

Ronan, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whaaa you started this thread without me!!! :)

I was wondering when you would turn up, my friend. ;-) Uh...not having been properly inculcated in the whole thing, I haven't seen much in the way of really great ones, but I have to say that T. Henry's solo goal against Man U last season in the Highbury match was pretty damn cool.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
It is a fucking travesty that this thread has not been revived once since its inception.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a truly beautiful thread

chris (chris), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Although I still have a soft spot for Giggsy's 1999 goal against the Arse in the FA Cup, I think the first time I ever remember going "how the fuck did he just do that" was David Platt's volley in the 1990 World Cup against Belgium.

I can't believe Dr. C nominated his own goal. Good work!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Sublime (part 1) Hazy memory, but Liverpool in about '79 when they beat Spurs 7-0. The final goal from keeper to defence, out to the wing, great cross (Steve Heighway?) and simple header. Effortless football.

Sublime (part 2) Di Canio's volley against Wimbledon.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I have sublime moment number 1 on video G, it's amazing. As is the tackle that John Duncan gives a penalty away with.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

My favourite goal - Carlos Alberto's in 1970. Also have a lot of time for Ronnie Radford's, and Holland's

Honourable mention to van Basten's in Euro88 that had that 'I can't fucking believe that' aspect, Saeed Owiran's against (I think) Belgium, Beckham's free kick against Greece (made me a happy bunny indeed). This is very good from Clarence Seedorf, as was that from the boy Shevchenko against Juventus about years back - ont the run and from an oblique angle. Also mention the Bergkampf goal against Leicester a few years back, where he does keepy-uppy in the penalty area around three players.

But for meeting these criteria:

1) I watched it (on telly, but live)
2) It was a big match
3 It makes me tingly still whenever I see it
4) Tingles get replaced by a beaming smile

I give you Saturday, June 15th 1996, at around 4.35 at Wembley Stadium.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to mention Gazza 96 but fucking hell that Seedorf strike is incredible. More video footage please!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

oh - I forgot Mark Hughes' scissor kick against Spain in 1985 which was jolly good.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't see that Clarence the cross eyed midfielder goal :o( which one is it?

and please Fifa, let foot of god live!!

chris (chris), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i feel compelled to mention Andy Cole's goal against Juventus in Turin, May '99 - brilliant inter-play with Yorke and superb context (taking the lead after going 2 down, first win for English club on Italian soil...ever?)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

seven words people...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought their 3rd against barca was better. Speaking of which - bet Bayern wish they'd have not taken it easy and knocked them out in the group stages now...

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

did darius vassell score an overhead for england too? i seem to remember soemething like that.

Barnes maximised the opportunity of using the now outlawed two footed right leg.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

he used to wear some funny Italian ones iirc, Jonnie will probably remember.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

My favourite John Barnes quote, circa World Cup '94 or '98, "I've been very impressed with some of the African teams in this tournament, especially Saudi Arabia."

This went in on my 14t birthday - best present ever. Unfortunately a few days later they chucked it all away.

I still maintain that avid Hirst scored some of the best goals I've ever seen. Search his bag of four against Hull in the 1990/91 season, which included a miraculous swivelling volley and another where he picked it up in his own half and took on everyone before rolling it under the keeper, and his screamer on the opening day of the 1991/92 season against Villa, which made Carlos look like he can't swerve a ball.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

77 posts and not one mention of Iain Dowie's precision header at Stockport.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The best goal of all time in my opinion has gotta be van bastens goal against the USSR in the euro 88 final. its a great goal for two reasons: 1) its just an awesome effort by van basten to even reach the ball never mind to put it top corner. 2) It was the game winning goal to clinch the championship of the second biggest tournament in the world. van basten was in a league all by himself.

p.s- holland will win euro 2004 and ruud will be the biggest star of the tourney.

Ryan W, Sunday, 30 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Carlos Alberto in Mexico 1970, like was said. But it would've been transcended by the greatest nearly-a-goal ever if it had gone in - same tournament, a through ball put Pele in the clear one-on-one with the Czech(?) keeper, he dummied it, went round the keeper one way, the ball went round the other way, the keeper was left standing cross-eyed but Pele missed from an acute angle.

Dr.Nightdub (Dr.Nightdub), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Jason. Cundy.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Laudrup for Denmark vs. Uruguay Mexico 86. Dribble dribble dribble, past about 9 of them, walks it into the back of the net, lovely.

Bergkamp vs. Argentina France 98. Back to goal, defender on shoulder, one touch - bye bye defender -another touch - hello semis.

And I can't remember who it was against but Roberto Baggio scored an amazing goal for Fiorentina where he picked up the ball around his own box and ran the length of the pitch, beating the other lot for fun before dinking it in.

Lee Sharpe back heel vs Barcelona in 97(??) Champs League.

David Nolan (David N.), Monday, 31 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
Zlaten Ibrahimovic scored a belter last night for Ajax against NAC. Download it here:

http://www.ultrasuid.nl/videoA.htm

That becomes a bittorrent, so save it, then download as you would. The file is 50Mb and is WMV (boo). Some good action, but if you're impatient, fast forward to 7minutes 30 seconds and see the kind of goal old-style dribblers used to score but you see much less of. It's a belter.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 18 March 2005 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

can someone explain what the phrase "that samba....." means in relation to football?

as far as i can see it means "hes brasilian (or foreign, at any rate, if your desperate), and he did something that a kid on a dogshit strewn park in the midlands tries to do but cant get it right"

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 18 March 2005 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave's lucky lottery numbers: 2, 7, 11, 14, 24, 48

Weird...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 18 March 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

How was I never on this thread before? It's Carlos Alberto for me, for a bunch of reasons: the dazzling skills of a defender casually beating three opponents in his own half, the sense of danger as Jairzinho is on the attack (only man to score in all his side's games in the World Cup Finals), the brilliant skills of Tostao, and then the glorious moments that almost move me to tears, even thinking about it now, as Pele gets involved. The sense that he could do anything, but that he knows that his captain is storming up to his right, and the defenders obviously knowing this, but clearly they can't leave Pele so as to cover someone else. And Pele stops. Everyone else is running and panicking, and he just stops, and waits for the perfect moment to roll a flawless pass into Alberto's path, and all he has to do is hit it, which he does, magnificently. The fact that it is the best team I ever saw, that it's set up by the best player I've ever seen, in the World Cup Final, are all part of regarding it as the greatest goal ever. The fact that it was also the first World Cup Final I ever watched, and the first big TV football event in colour, gives it an added personal weight for me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 18 March 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i was under the impression that "that samba shit" referred to that nike advert, with the samba music, and in which a load of folks from the brazil national team did a bunch of mad skeelz and ronaldinho did this crazy dummy/dance/back of the net skill that was so mad it should have been in that advert.

yeh i think many Brazilian players enjoy and encourage the 'samba skills' thing, it's hardly a derogatory thing although it is an annoying cliche

Man U v Sheff Wed 2007/8. A cross from Damien Duff gets cleared by Guy Branston. The ball is then hit forward first time by plucky young Norwegian Petter Moen into the path of compatriate Dan Holm about 40 yards from goal who without looking up (probably) punts it over a stranded Tim Howard. Howard then spends the next minute wailing tears of despair and I am crowned king of the universe.

NB - this happened on FM2005 and I might be embellishing slightly.

Pele.... Ronaldinho.... ¿? Quiénes son..??
Ahhhh...! Son los de Brasil... Los que están bien acomodados por la FIFA... Perdón... Me olvidaba de los ladrones... Qué se siente ser el que más veces ganó por estar acomodado..?? =P

Pele.... Ronaldinho.... ¿? Who are them..??
Ahhhh...! They are from Brazil... Those who FIFA put in that place... Sorry... I was forgetting those thieves... What do you all fill be who more times win thanks to FIFA..?? =P

Sorry again... It's about the best goal ever... Maradona's goal...! For sure...!! =D

As for 'that samba shit' Alex Bellos goes into a lot of interesting detail about it in his book 'Futebol Brazilian Way Of Life'. It may be used in cliched fashion by the media over here, but there is a lot of cross-over between carnival culture and football, not least in the fact that a number of clubs have their own samba schools.

JG is very right, calling quasi racism on the ohrase is very disingenuous I think. Basically the Brazilian culture of fannydangle is stronger than anywhere else, as highlighted in Bellos' book. when it comes down to it they'd rather be the entertainer than the Lineker, every time.

saw a '10 best world cup goals' list on some fifa propaganda reel last night. never seen that manuel negrete one mentioned upthread, total belter. others worth a mention: hagi's cross-shot vs colombia ('94), robbie baggio vs czechoslovakia (I think?, '90), and maradona's one from the '86 semi-final against belgium which is nearly as good as the england goal.

Jimmy Mod: NOIZE BOARD GRIL COMPARISON ANALYST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

my own favorite was when I set a goal of re-frying a sandwich that had already been fried twice, but that's a different sort of thing
