Craig Gilchrist, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehe, I just threw that one in there to see if anyone noticed :-)

I can't get any for my area (maybe it doesn't extend to American addresses?), but I can tell you two of my favorites near me, from memory: Knob Lick and Big Bone Lick. And there's also a Dix river, which is dammed in one place, and on this dam is a dock, and thus one of my favorite catfishing holes Dix Dam Docks.

"Deep Hole". True. I have been there. It was not nice. There was a lot of shrubbery and snakes and what some locals liked to call a *river*. A bit like Garden of Eden really.

Apparently we have a Wet Beaver Creek here in Australia somewhere; and also, a Chinaman's Knob and a Tittybong. So it is said.

moley, Thursday, 22 May 2008 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

Perhaps tittybong is the hippy version of boob scotch.

moley, Thursday, 22 May 2008 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

Here in Dublin, England, we have the great comical placename of Stillorgan. My learned friend M@rk W1nkelmann used to live there, and once one a competition on John Peel's programme that led to his name and address being read out in an incredulous tone of voice.

The funny thing is that the way you put the stresses on Stillorgan here it does not sound rude.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 22 May 2008 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

I still can't believe there's a street called Butthole Lane.

We have a 10'000 people town here whose name (Gland) translates as either: 1. acorn. 2. head of the penis / glans penis 3. jerk.
Not really rude, but there's also a village of 1400 people named Bière which means either: 1. Beer, 2. Coffin.

in my area we have Bumfagon Road/Bumfagon Brook/Bumfagon Swamp (Loudon, New Hampshire) — one of the most scenic country roads I've ever run down. I had some theories involving cigarettes and/or naughty British schoolboys, but google tells me that "the curious name derives from the term for the area coined by early French Quebec settlers: bon fagon or 'good firewood'." twenty miles away in Barrington, NH, lies the similarly named Bumfagging Hill

also of note are Hitty Titty Brook (Salem, NH) and the Cockermouth River (Groton and Hebron, NH)
