I was looking through Dance Dance Dance at the library and noticed some magazine pictures tucked in the dust jacket. I unfolded them and found women's bits er spread before me.

There was a Ch1cago playwr1ght who died and left his estate to us, and some of the books had letters or postcards in them, one or two of them from a (long-dead) famous Ch1cago n0velist.

i found 2 $20 bills folded inside a copy of Bridge across Forever by Richard Bach. I took the money and didn't buy the book.

I also just bought a copy of janet frame's "faced in the water" which belonged to one Lynn Ramsey. Maybe not the same lynn ramsey, I guess, but maybe.

I once spent a summer in a smallish city, working as a dishwasher and my aunt's and uncle's restaurant. There was this waiter working there that used to drive me crazy-- a very prissy character named Eric. One day I bought a book (I wish I could remember which one) in a used bookstore in the same town, and when I opened it there fell out a picture of the waiter, clad in nothing but jockey shorts, making muscles with both arms and looking into the camera with this come-hither expression that's completely cracking me up to think about, 12 years later.

Do you ever feel like leaving things in library books or books you are getting rid of, just so that some future person can wonder where this weird polaroid, note, sketch etc came from? It would make a good art project I think, I might start doing this.

this is an awesome idea! kind of like a non-destructive joe orton type stunt.

This wasn't in a book, but I found a post-breakup letter in a copy of Tim Buckley's "Greetings From LA" LP I got at a swap meet. It started out promising with "You may wonder why i cheated on you..." and got boring reeeeaaaallllly fast.

I forgot this thread ever existed! My girlfriend works in a used bookstore and they make at least a dozen buys a day so the stream of entertaining stuff never ceases. The other day a woman came in and sold a bunch of old books and claimed, "If you find anything in there, it was my dad's." About five Playboy centerfolds from the 60s fell out of the middle of the first book -- not the magazines, just the removed centerfold section. A few minutes later her coworker shrieked and stomped on something on the ground. A cockroach, right? Not quite.. there was a polaroid close-up of a penis that fell out of a book.

A small, German book about the Latin language, from about 1910, in blackletter font and all. Somewhere in the early pages, where various ethnic and language groups are discussed in order to place Latin and the Romans in a broader context, this (Norwegian) sentence pencilled into the margin with seemingly prewar handwriting: "NB it has later been established that the Hittites were Aryans!"

scrawled on the inside cover of david lee roth's autobiography, crazy from the heat:

I bought 2 very early Private Eye annuals ('Eye on London' and 'Romantic England and other unlikely stories') both from 1963 in Denmark and both were full of cuttings from UK newspapers stretching from Peter Cook's obituaries right back to the original reviews of Beyond The Fringe, the Establishment Club and Not Only...But Also. Fascinating stuff.

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 January 2009 08:57 (fifteen years ago) link

A friend of mine used to live in a flat owned by an older male relative, who was hospitalized (and who later died in hospital). All his books and other stuff were still there, and his bookshelf had a lot of books on Christianity, so we thought he must've been quite religious. But then later on my friend found a box that was put in a cupboard or something, and in the box there were some books on homosexuality and some old erotic gay pictures (I think they were from the 70s or older). So he must've felt quite contradicted about himself. All of this made me a bit sad, even though I'd never met this person.

Also, when I was staying at some married friends' house, they let me stay in the same room as the books. So, at midnight I decided to have a rummage. Leafing through the kama-sutra not only were some of the sentences highlighted, but on one page there was a 10 year old polariod of my friends "in the missionary position". I just could not look at them the next day.

OK. It's been nearly 5 years since this misinformation was posted. I can admit that I was probably about 13 when this happened, unlikely to ever be invited to any 'married friends' house', and yes, for 'friends' read 'parents' :(

Yeah man it set my latency back 5 years. Actually I made the polaroid part up, but the highlighted and annotated sex journal was truth. It's more likely that my mother was studying for an assignment or something on 'Sexual Lust' (it wasn't a kama-sutra at all) at some point during the 80s, but at the time I truly believed that my parents had chosen to store away some 'special passages' for when they might be useful... (shudder)... Sorry to discredit an amusing tale but I did use to lie and embellish quite a lot when I was 16.

i was found a tourist guide book for iraq from the 70s at a second hand book sale, had a postcard inside from an iraqi saying:

"hey, come and visit us some time, we can go and see all the ancient temples and whatnot, check out the book."

sort of depressing.

When I was 15, I had two summer jobs, one as a dishwasher in my aunt and uncle's restaurant and one at a used bookstore down the street from it. There was this waiter at the restaurant everyone hated-- he had this really snooty air and was a dick to everyone in the kitchen. About halfway through the summer I was going through a bunch of books someone had sold to the bookstore and a bunch of photos fell out of one of them. Pictured was the same waiter, in what looked like a hotel room, in aqua-coloured bikini briefs, looking directly into the camera with the same supercilious pursed-lipped expression he always had when he looked into the kitchen to see if his table's food was out.

I almost bought a tatty old copy of Alice in Wonderland because the inside cover had "Happy Christmas, Darling, love Mummy and Daddy XXXXXXX" written in it, but I decided that stupidly excessive sentimentalism wasn't a good enough reason. I now regret it. :'(

I got a big box (45 pounds) of 60s Playboys from an Ebay store yesterday. In the auction post, the store mentioned that they hadn't looked through every magazine for defects and whatnot. So because of that I got the unlisted bonus of finding in one of the issues a personalized autographed b&w glossy headshot of Stella Stevens plus a folded pin up of her from a mid-60s issue of Variety (that had an ad for The Naked Prey on the other side).

I found a few family photos taped to the blank pages of the hardcover booklet that came with the Dock Boggs CD I bought. there's a (1950s?) polaroid of a young couple standing in front of a fireplace, a polaroid (also '50s?) of two boys and two middle aged ladies on a porch, and a color photo (1980s or '90s?) of a family (mom + dad and four kids) sitting on one side of a kitchen table. there's also a sentimental note from "Ron, Jr." to his brother Bill. all that stuff must've really hurt the resale value of the CD, because I got it for ≈$8 at a time when copies were going for ten times that much on Amazon.
