heaven and hell.

inspired sadly by watching the fresh prince last night...

less a question of whether or not there *is* an afterlife rather than if heaven and hell exist, what would they be for you? (and of course, the ultimate metaquestion: which would you end up in?)

heaven = well stocked record store in a post-money society, with plenty of burritos.

hell = other people. (ha. ha ha.)

jess, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Once is enough.

dave q, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I assume that if either existed they would be utterly unimaginable. I can see the downside of any fantasy world (and to a lesser extent) the limitations of any torture.

Nick, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

hell=eternity spent in white room with fundie christians, which riases the grand question - isn't that their idea of heaven?

Geoff, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Jess, I'll see you there. I hope they have al pastor.

Sean, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have to steal Dickon Edwards' answer to that very question from POP:ART...

"Presumably purgatory and hell are incredibly over-subscribed, while heaven is full of self-righteous bores. I would have to create my own Other Heaven for all those who feel excluded from the other parties. A heaven for gatecrashers who haven't the nerve to gatecrash. No trainers."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hmm... that quote whiffs of "I'm so smart" but actually seems quite uninspired. I've read Dickon Edwards quotes in the past that have had a similar effect on me.

Nick, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

*tsk* For shame, Nick. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've often wondered if the heaven and hell we get is the one of our conception or of somebody else's. Is heaven a white room with boring Christians, 72 virgins in an oasis with all the figs you can eat, or the above-mentioned record store? Is hell a lake of fire, a lack of seeing God, or a record store stocked only with Pat Boone disks?

nickn, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Heaven is joyful anticipation of things new and exciting. Hell is repetition.

On top of the sky is a place where you go if you've done nothing wrong,
If you've done nothing wrong.

And down in the ground is a place where you go if you've been a bad boy,
If you've been a bad boy.

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 08:23 (twenty years ago) link

A friend of mine once suggested that heaven and hell are entirely subjective states. Through life, you collect all kinds of energy of different intensities and qualities. When you die, you release all of the energy you've collected. Depending on how much you have and how strong it is, that's what determines how long you stick around and what kind of state you stick around in. For instance, if you have a lot very strong angry energy, you'll probably stick around a while, though your primary emotion during this time will be anger. If you have lots of bland, tentative kinds of energies, your experience will consequently be shorter and not very exciting. So each person experiences a heaven or hell of his or her own making.
I haven't really thought through the complications of this, but the idea appeals to me very much. It certainly beats being shoe-horned into someone else's idea of an afterlife.
