amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 22 July 2004 04:13 (nineteen years ago) link

your grandma is 108? how old are you old man?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 04:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm 40, my mother is 72. My mom is the baby of my grandmother's 3 kids. (I have an aunt in her mid-80s and an uncle nearly 90.) As far as "what has she been eating all these years," the answer is about three pints of milk every day. Straight back, very little osteoporosis, and when she had a pretty hard fall at 102, she didn't break anything.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 22 July 2004 12:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Happy birthday indeed!

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:35 (seventeen years ago) link

im going to email my brother about this because he's been drinking 4 litres (i dont know what that is in pints but its a lot) of milk a day since he was a teenager. hes going to live forever!

has grandma been through a metal dectector lately? my brother gets bleeps every time he does and they finally worked out it was from all the milk hes drunk over the years doing something to his bones that sets the detector off. last time he went through US airport security they called him 'milk boy'.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Rock Hardy, I have the solution to your financial woes! Obviously you come from very good stock. You should sell your sperm!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:41 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG, that is an awesome idea, but I wonder if it's worth getting the vasectomy reversed for? Seriously, I'd do it if there were a million people clamoring for my seed.

(Financial situation much improved the last few months, btw)

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:44 (seventeen years ago) link

still game!!

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyway, there's a luncheon + local media event today for her. She fell about a year ago and broke her hip, and they've restricted her to bed and wheelchair at the nursing home since then, though she feels good and wants to get up and walk. Her memory is pretty gone, but it's not Alzheimer's or dementia, just REALLY OLD AGE, I guess. She recognizes people who come to visit her often, but can't quite come up with their names.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, that was fun! My mom's brother and sister looked good -- my uncle is 90 and looks about 75 -- and my grandmother did too. And as always, she eats like a horse.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Friday, 21 July 2006 19:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I did, too! Happy, happy birthday!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 21 July 2006 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

The funny thing is, I say "yay" for her but I wouldn't really want to live that long myself. But she seems content, as long as she gets lots of milk.

Thank you all! For maximum comedy laffs, imagine me telling her at lunch today that a bunch of people I know from the internet wished her a happy birthday.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Friday, 21 July 2006 21:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I want to live that long! Death sucks and is to be avoided! I draw the line at Alzheimers or terrible pain, but the kind of severe short-term memory deficits that affect my 87 year-old mother and my 92 year-old aunt (but strangely, not my 90 year-old aunt) are entirely bearable. Who needs to remember conversations or know people's names, anyway? As long as you still enjoy your main passions.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 21 July 2006 23:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Bless her heart. I hope this thread gets revived in a pleasant way again.

Wow Rock. This is indeed an occasion for celebration. Amazing stuff :) All the universe's wealth to her!

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 23 July 2006 03:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks, Trayce! Today is her actual birthday, so now she is a for-real supercentenarian. The GRG lists 75 others worldwide. I've been in contact with them and they're starting to put their researchers on verifying her age, which is nice because I thought we were going to have to do all the work.

By one account she is 111 years old: an uncle gave her birth year as 1895 in the 1900 census, but everybody's pretty sure he just misspoke. All other accounts have her born on 23 July 1896. She doesn't have a birth certificate, so the best document on hand is her marriage license.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 23 July 2006 13:51 (seventeen years ago) link

wow. that is amazing.

you know, i feel all old turning 30 later this year but your grandmother was 30 in 1926. and she's lived through everything that's happened since 1926. that makes me feel very young.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 23 July 2006 13:58 (seventeen years ago) link

"Who needs to remember conversations or know people's names, anyway? As long as you still enjoy your main passions."

sucks to be a jai alai playing cruise ship director with a passion for flying experimental aircraft. my main passions are ice cream, old records, and staring at party pictures in old town & country magazines. i'm good to go! as long as my motor skills, hearing, and eyesight hold out.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 23 July 2006 13:59 (seventeen years ago) link

my one remaining grandparent, my dad's mom, is still kicking. she kicks really slowly though. she's a 100. i think. my memory isn't what it used to be.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:00 (seventeen years ago) link

you always hope that the 110 year old people live on nothing but whiskey and chewing tobacco, but it's hardly ever true.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think my grandmother ever drank alcohol even in her youth, but she would get my dad to bring her a beer occasionally to wash her hair with. Apparently there's a school of thought that the occasional beer shampoo is good for your hair.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 23 July 2006 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

DV, you may be thinking of my Aunt Katie, who went to Alaska in the summer and came back and said "they got mosquitoes up there big enough to fuck a turkey." I think I've mentioned her in the secret club newsletter.

Thank you all! They're having cake and ice cream for her today at the nursing home, and I'm so buried in work I may not be able to go. All three of her children are still alive -- my mother is her youngest, and will turn 75 in two months.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 23 July 2007 15:55 (sixteen years ago) link

WOW!

According to this she is the 61st oldest person in the entire world!

Happy birthday!!!

onimo, Monday, 23 July 2007 15:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Yep, after I contacted them, the GRG people did the legwork in confirming her age so we didn't have to. I looked at the site a couple of weeks ago and she was #62 -- no surprises at all when names drop off the list...

It's weird, she's been really old all my life, and I'm into freakin' middle age! It's going to be very weird when she passes.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 23 July 2007 16:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Best birthday wishes to your grandma, Rock! Getting to 111 and *still* enjoying cake and ice cream - surely an example to us all.

Rock Hardy, you 43-year-old, you are a green twig on your family tree.

Beth Parker, Monday, 23 July 2007 22:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Remember how we used to think that there were all these super-centenarians living in Soviet Georgia? It turned out to be a scam perpetuated by Stalin. He had people use their grandparents' birth certificates. Why? To bolster the nonexistent Soviet tourism industry? COME SEE ALL THE REALLY OLD PEOPLE DRINKING VODKA BEFORE BREAKFAST!!!!!

World's Oldest Person Dies

Hey Rock Hardy, your grandma just moved up a notch!

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 02:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Dammit Beth, don't make me lol at people's deaths! It's bad karma!

She's up to #58 on the big board, so there must've been several deaths in the last three weeks. She had a checkup a couple of weeks ago and the doctor said her heart's fine, respiration's fine, circulation and BP are fine...she could go to sleep tonight and not wake up, or she could live for years.

The GRG is taking a more active interest in her. They asked my mother to help them conduct a phone interview with her -- the answer to just about every question was "well, I don't remember."

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 02:39 (sixteen years ago) link

She's sneaking out at night to kill the competition.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 02:54 (sixteen years ago) link

To be fair to Stalin (ahem) age overstatement was common in Russia way before he took over. It's all to do with getting the perks of being the elder of the village.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 06:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Probably not just Russia either. Wasn't there some Japanese island where they claimed to have a disproportionate number of centenarians?
