RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, just shy of half of them.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:11 (nineteen years ago) link

top half or bottom half

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:14 (nineteen years ago) link

half of ALL of them?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:14 (nineteen years ago) link

my bottom half has too much freedom. i demand tighter pants.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Are you talking about question number 3, does the press have too much freedom? Cause I read those figures as 36%. Was there another figure in there?

My New Identity (kate), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I was referring to question 20, which is worded slightly differently.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:15 (nineteen years ago) link

In other news, 49% of turkeys vote in favour of Christmas.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:31 (nineteen years ago) link

thanksgiving, surely.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:37 (nineteen years ago) link

No, that would be silly.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah, OK, I'll check that one, then.

My New Identity (kate), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:39 (nineteen years ago) link

49% of American turkeys.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Hrmmm, that brings to mind the line about "lies, damn lies and statistics" because it's the same question, worded one way, over 40% believed that freedom of the press was fine, and in the other question, 49% believe there's too much? Weird.

My New Identity (kate), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:41 (nineteen years ago) link

No, that just leaves 11% who don't know.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I wish people were more honest, about not knowing.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know about that, RJG

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I like "both" as an answer. There's too much freedom! There's not enough freedom!

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:49 (nineteen years ago) link

maybe this is part of bush's mental health survey.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:54 (nineteen years ago) link

i demand tighter pants.

a cause that i can get behind.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

the wording isn't abt 'press freedom' but the freedom of the 'media' to do 'whatever it wants' which may catch a different kind of discontent. but yeah, some of these responses are pretty terrifying, the ten commandments one in particular.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't remember being asked these questions.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:10 (nineteen years ago) link

The wording in this poll is really strange, with much of it veering into push poll territory. Odd. Doesn't Pew do a similar poll? How does that one compare?

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:15 (nineteen years ago) link

a cause that i can get behind.

Lauren is the roxor.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I like "both" as an answer. There's too much freedom! There's not enough freedom!

HOW IS THAT! I THRUST AT EMOBUTT

They need to look quite closely at their religion categories - are you Catholic, Protestant, Jewish or "some other"? And the biggest chunk, 35%, go for other.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I bet a lot of protestants don't identify as such.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:42 (nineteen years ago) link

and, then, there are the scientologists.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:43 (nineteen years ago) link

@adamjohnsonNYC Adam H.
yes the US govt should pay and train "independent reporters." The irony of this statement is lost on these deluded ideologues.

Welp, sounds like it's time to return those Pell grants, journos.
