Can not really figure out Belfast usage of "culchie", have heard it used to mean "students from Tyrone who wear GAA shirts and trash Belfast's notoriously rowdy student housing area on St Patrick's day" and "weedy pseudo-intellectuals all reading their newspapers and novels which don't involve stuff blowing up" and anything in between
as someone from a small market town in a slightly (but not very) rural bit of England I haaate hearing Londoners use words like "provincial" so if that is all it means then I am not for it, but it is a euphonious word I guess

― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 29 May 2010 13:18 (sixteen years ago)
xp it's like 'provincial' but with added whip.
main difference there being chez nous we have a superiority complex wrt dubs, so really it's quite funny.
xxp- yeah i reckon it was me too!

― Ismael Klata, Saturday, 29 May 2010 13:25 (sixteen years ago)
I thought culchies were townies who go out and lairily drink on a Saturday, but without fighting - if they fought, they would be SPIDES.
― when the fertilizer hits the ventilator (suzy), Saturday, 29 May 2010 13:29 (sixteen years ago)
there are serious international boundaries here if your version of the culchie does not get involved in assault charges with each visit to a large population centre
― May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Saturday, 29 May 2010 13:34 (sixteen years ago)
Ah. The guys I'm thinking of don't fight, but they'd puke or pee in public. Ed used to call them 'shirts and shoes'.
― when the fertilizer hits the ventilator (suzy), Saturday, 29 May 2010 13:47 (sixteen years ago)
K1ltim4gh (pronounced /ˌkɪltʃɪˈmɒk/) is said by some to be a possible origin of the quasi-derogatory term (depending on context and use) "culchie", traditionally employed by Dubliners to describe people from rural Ireland, or from any part of Ireland outside Dublin.this doesn't seem very likely to me
this doesn't seem very likely to me
Heard it a few times, from not-awful sources, but nah sounds totally fake-back-derivation to me too, kind of downer because I'd be a-ok with this, wld give me some credentials in the culchie pride movement.
― woof, Saturday, 29 May 2010 13:49 (sixteen years ago)

― May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Saturday, 29 May 2010 13:51 (sixteen years ago)
is culchie used interchangably w/ provincial these days? i thought it was strictly applied to bathtub poteen drinking ne'er do wells in the hills and not for bourgie townsppl from sligo
― nakhchivan, Saturday, 29 May 2010 14:19 (sixteen years ago)
it's all done solely on income since the celtic tiger tbh
but yeah rather than 'provincial' really i suppose it's 'rural'
― May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Saturday, 29 May 2010 14:23 (sixteen years ago)
iirc i've actually been there and can't rly remember anything about it but i'd guess it's too small a place to have developed a countrywide meme tbh, cute fake etymology tho

Most of my LOLIRELAND trufax (spides, the stabbiness of Limerick, etc) come from '90s friendships with Father Ted guys and popstars of the Hannon and Cairns variety. Though mostly with the Hannon, this involved asking him whether there were tons of people in his manor with my very very Fermanagh surname.

How different are the words HOME, CHRIST, ALE, MASTER, on his lips and on mine! I cannot speak or write these words without unrest of spirit. His language, so familiar and so foreign, will always be for me an acquired speech. I have not made or accepted its words. My voice holds them at bay. My soul frets in the shadow of his language.
