And I'm bored. Anyone out there?

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Bored....but sadly not drunk.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

How is that beautiful baby girl?

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

She's a lovely little ball of joy and has gotten very talkative (not that she's saying anything discernable, mind you). This evening, she's with my wife and mother and sister and nogoodnick nephews out on Long Island, where I shall be joining them tomorrow. But tonight, I'm at work....listening to mp3s and wishing the clock would move with greater stealth.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm bored and not drunk and it's my birthday weekend and I don't have anything fun planned. :''(

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

shitty! Happy Birthday Aaron!!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I know that feeling. I just got dropped off at work by the co-worker who drove to the bar, and I'm hanging around a little til my drunk wears off a little.

Babies don't have to say anything discernable to be adorable and gorgeous. Really, seeing all her pictures does my heart good.

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

happy birthday, aaron!!!

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, thanks Alex, thanks Luna. All my friends have to work and stuff or otherwise can't make it up here. Best I'll do is probably dinner with my parents Saturday night. I'm such a loser, hahaha. Maybe I should get drunk...also I appeared to have pissed off an epileptic on another thread, but maybe he was just fucking with me.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm no longer drunk, just really sleepy.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to "Spellbound" by Siouxsie & the Banshees now at an irresponsibly high volume now that my boss has left. Time to do some wavey arm dances, methinks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm watching The Hills Have Eyes on IFC. I haven't Siouxsie for years but I have a Diamanda Galas CD coming in the mail soon and I bet she could kick Siouxsie's ass.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Undoubtedly. I met Diamanda at the New Music Seminar in 1991, and she scared the bejesus outta me....albeit in a kinda sexy way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Still, gimme Siouxsie over Plauge Mass every day of the century.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, that baby girl is gorgeous! almost makes me want another.

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah hi

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hold on while I get a Newcastle.

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

hurry!

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, she definitely personifies that scary/sexy dynamic. I had a crush on her when I was 14 after seeing her on the Jon Stewart show. I played the tape for my friends like, "This is the coolest chick ever!" and they all thought I was nuts.

Mask of the Red Death Trilogy is what's on the way. Haven't heard the Plague Mass CD.

and yes the baby is very cute. Two of my cousins, my uncle and stepbrother all have had new babies recently, but they all live so far away I haven't seen them yet.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

woooo

Kingfish of Burma (Kingfish), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the ambient thing i'm listening to is about to end .. what next? i'm thinking side 2 of Low.

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

correct! i just listened to that.

.rob (rgeary), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

just listen to side 1 first anyway, it's only like 15 minutes long

.rob (rgeary), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I love these glorified chatroom threads.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

dropped the needle

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

what's that awful hooded jacket he's wearing? was that ever fashionable? or is he just lording it over us, since he's bowie and he can wear whatever he wants?

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

shit I'm not in the mood for this movie. I'll think I'll go hunt down my cassette copy of Low.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's two different pieces?

.rob (rgeary), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

'vassiferette' is the cutest thing EVER

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno, i have a 12" sleeve here that makes it look like some hideous wool creation with both a high collar and hood.

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

woohoo, I found it. and hey, it's got Changesonebowie on the other side. Should make for a good listen...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Plague Mass will turn your shit WHITE, man, I tell ya. It's fucking seriously frightening.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, on second look you're right

he can wear anything he damn well pleases though and looks spectacular anyway

.rob (rgeary), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

it's true, it's almost demonic his face. do you suppose he has a portrait of himself somewhere where he looks old and ruined?

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's called iggy pop

.rob (rgeary), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Now listeing to "Cattle & Cane" by the Go-Betweens.....for those of you keeping score.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

to Alex: I'll bet. I'll probably get that next but I decided to start with the red death trilogy first. I had the Sporting life of course but I've heard that it's a lot tamer than the earlier stuff.

Breaking Glass just ended. What in the world playing now. Man these songs are short.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i imagine it was tough to get bowie to sit still in the studio for longer than five minutes.

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

listen to "Was There Anything I Should Do" next!

Kingfish of Burma (Kingfish), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, Go-Betweens are good. I used to have Before Hollywood. I'll have to buy that again soon.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

aaron, i'm like two songs ahead of you!

.rob (rgeary), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

listen to "Was There Anything I Should Do" next!

EXCELLENT suggestion, but I have not said mp3. Great, great, great song, though.

Robert "the Vicar" Vickers now works for Jetset records in publicity, and he's a hecka-swell fella (ex Go-Betweens bass player)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Now listening to "Bitch" by the Stones...somewhat boringly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I had to find the tape first. Always Crashing in the same car just wrapping up now.....

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Onto "Coming up Roses" by the late Elliott Smith.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Warszawa on now

So before this I was at a bar where a friend of mine, a female bodybuilder, was "discovered". It looks like she'll be a professional female wrestler. They're also doing a reality TV behind-the-scenes of the new girls. The network?

ABC Family.

(btw, we decided she'd be a bad guy, Catholic schoolgirl character. "ARE YOU READY TO GO TO CONFESSION?!?!?")

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm drunk but not bored, thanks to ILM.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Or ILE, rather.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's still 5% in North America btw. And 3.6% in China…

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:36 (seven years ago)

you'd need some top rate hypnosis to work that on me, Budvar is on a different level to that piss.

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:36 (seven years ago)

but piss I reluctantly imbibe when it's on offer at tescos nevertheless!

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:38 (seven years ago)

you wake with a hangover in China, better check your social credit rating?

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:39 (seven years ago)

Indeed. It comes with a smart metre.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:44 (seven years ago)

I just started reading a Strindberg novel after lunch and thought of this thread. The introduction consists of him interviewing himself, in the course of which is this exchange:

Interviewer. [..] don't think you really think you should practice what you preach?

Author. That's impossible. It's true that you Christians should, but there's no reason why we heathens should. I once thought I could become a teetotaller, but I know I'm doomed to drink as long as I live because my forefathers were drinking ever since time began.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 14:14 (seven years ago)

... which doesn't hold out much hope for the Irish and Scots tbh.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 14:15 (seven years ago)

I seem to recall a scene from Georges Bernanos's Diary of a Country Priest where the doctor tells the protagonist that his problem isn't so much the alcohol that he drinks as the alcohol that was drunk for him, even before he was born.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 14:29 (seven years ago)

its the vodka during pregnancy done the serious damage tbph

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 14:44 (seven years ago)

Also a fan of lower abv. But I generally pace myself according to how much time I have

calstars, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 18:14 (seven years ago)

There's been a big uptick in the amount of non-alcoholic/low alcoholic wines and distilled spirits in the last couple of years too.

Yerac, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 18:31 (seven years ago)

There's a lot more session beers on tap these days but they are inexplicably still around 5%, that's not session! Well maybe it is if the IPAs are all around 6-7% now. But gimme a tasty 3.2% beer so I can drink 4-5 of them in an evening.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 18:36 (seven years ago)

oddly enough I am researching the topic about the low alcohol market for an exam in June so I have been reading a lot about it.

This is a good article https://www.bonappetit.com/story/big-alcohol

and also re: some above posts:

Heineken is hoping to tap into what it believes is an increasing desire among consumers for beer that will not get them drunk. The European market for zero alcohol beer grew about 5% a year from 2010 to 2015, according to research group Canadean, while the overall beer market shrank.

Rival AB InBev, which makes more than a quarter of the world's beer, is aiming to make a fifth of its beer low- or zero-alcohol by 2025. For the maker of Budweiser, Stella Artois and Corona, low means an alcohol content of up to 3.5%.- business insider

Yerac, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 19:34 (seven years ago)

I’ll do a low abv that tastes decent but if I want 0 pct I’ll just have a seltzer

calstars, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 19:45 (seven years ago)

There's a couple Texas breweries that do really good ones but they're by no means easy to find on tap... Austin Beerworks' Einhorn is a 3% Berliner Weisse sour and Jester King's Petit Prince is 2.9% Belgian Saison. And of course you can always get a Radler, but it begs for a whiskey chaser.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 19:59 (seven years ago)

I was gonna say move to Utah if you want 3.2% beers, but apparently their laws have changed recently?

low % beer = more calories & more $$ for same buzz vs higher %. If something is under 5% I have a hard time choosing it.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 20:30 (seven years ago)

hahaha, I want *tasty* low-ABV beers, if I want low-ABV in Texas I can always get a Lone Star Light or a Michelob Ultra.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 20:51 (seven years ago)

Buk got to 74 supping every day. Bunuel 83 and he'd down gallons* of wine. Alcoholism can be good.

It's got a ton of great jokes but the ending is not only funny it's the secret of life

FBPRieu (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 23 November 2019 23:45 (six years ago)

love this wiki detail:

The Spanish board of censors rejected the original ending of the film, which depicted Viridiana entering her cousin's room and slowly closing the door behind her. Consequently, a new ending was written which turned out to be more suggestive than the first — since it implied a ménage à trois among Ramona, Jorge, and Viridiana.
