self-sabotage

anyone here prone to this: deliberately fucking things up, so at least you know when they're going to fuck up, rather than being surprised by it when you least expect...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

someone accused me of this the other day! that's why i'm asking.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's a stupid idea and don't think i do, but do people do it or is it nonsense cod-psycholgy?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

you knew this thread would fail didn't you?

chris (chris), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Subconsciously I do this, mostly in terms of provoking arguments.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, but don't you start chris - it's a serious question! i think it's a nutty concept, myself, but i'm curious to see how many people buy into the theory.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think loads of people do this.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, mark, i'm pretty combative and i do piss people off, often deliberately, but i don't do it to screw myself over, i do it to annoy them!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

well, to a certain extent everyone does it anyway, it could equally be described as just damage limitation, and I mean as regards the emotional form of this, surely nobody goes around flinging their emotions freely about, to all and sundry, or their time for that matter. it's just a particularly extreme version of natural human defensiveness.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

damage limitation

now that's quite a valid point, put that way. the main reason i laughed at it was the term itself, i think - sounds like something you'd hear on oprah.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I never fuck anything up.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

How's the ankle?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a roommate who, if he wasn't sure if he wanted to keep something or throw it away, would smash it with a hammer to make the choice easier.

I know some people with discipline problems that routinely, purposely fuck up because it's not "normal" for them to have things go well.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

guilty - i was afraid of success in the past because it was the unknown, failure was familiar and i endured it. or so i thought (actually yes this was bullshit and really i was just lazy and absent-minded).

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I do this consciously and deliberately all the fucking time

TOMBOT, Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It tingles, like licking a battery!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Shell from Big Brother's sister's really nice

The Best Way to Break Up

(sorry)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

i was having a relatively good day. then i went googling for pictures of gas chambers they use at animal shelters. now i want to die.

what the fuck is wrong with me?

i can't even tell you. but i suspect it has to do with the subject of this thread.

OK fair point.

I used to self-sabotage things all the time but I try not to do it so much anymore.

some american borad (ENBB), Friday, 3 July 2009 05:56 (sixteen years ago)

i've been pretty good about it lately, actually.
