MUTEK 5th Edition, 2004, June 2-6 - Montreal, Canada

Mutek has built up a reputation as one of the leading international electronic music festivals - it is North America's answer to Europe's Barcelona based Sonar Festival.

Mutek 2004 will be the 5th Anniversary for the Montreal based festival.

From June 2nd to the 6th Montreal will transform into the quintessential electronic music immersive experience. With over 60 artists from close to a dozen countries, MUTEK returns for its 5th anniversary bearing something for everyone. Given the eleven different showcases, panel discussions, workshops, and a bagful of surprises, audiences will be able to enjoy all permutations of contemporary electronic music from morning to night. And this year being a landmark birthday for the festival, a handful of our past discoveries have returned to mark the occasion with some rare performances.

This year's highlights include:

* Plastikman's first live performance in over nine years
* Raster-Noton program
* Ricardo Villalobos rare North American appearance
* Schneider TM
* Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit of CAN, featuring Joseph Suchy
* Jamie Lidell
* Ilpo Väisänen of Pan Sonic
* Smith n Hack
* Junior Boys
* Richard Chartier & COH performing the world premiere of CHESSMACHINE
* Jason Forrest aka Donna Summer
* Isolée
* Krikor
* Portable
* Crackhaus
* Herbert DJ set
* and many more

Events will take place at Ex-Centris , the festival's home for the last five years, as well as SAT and Metropolis.

As a means of refurbishing the community, this year's festival will put more emphasis on the technological side of music with a new series of workshops showcasing the latest developments in software design available to electronic artists.

MUTEK_INTERSECTION, the panel discussion series, also returns as a forum to articulate MUTEK's core argument and questions through the lens of debate - offered in collaboration with The Association for Electronic Music .

the plastikman show is going to be crazy! its like his first live performance in years and he said that they spent close to $100,000 on the multimedia and shit for the show. and its going to be a one-off. ooooh

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:52 (nineteen years ago) link

i should have grabbed his butt

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:53 (nineteen years ago) link

jet-setting? im hitching a ride in the back of a van. the kind with no seats. like a child-molestor van.

also, ricardo villalobos had to cancel.
also, its richie's birthday weekend so it'll be fun. and then he's spinning in new york the next weekend

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I want to, but can't. You'll all have fun though!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:57 (nineteen years ago) link

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:57 (nineteen years ago) link

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I would love to go but I have to work, dammit!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:08 (nineteen years ago) link

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:11 (nineteen years ago) link

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:11 (nineteen years ago) link

What day is Ilpo Vaisanen playing? This is all moot, as I'm definitely unable to go.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:13 (nineteen years ago) link

i will be in town for the stupid jazz festival though

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:14 (nineteen years ago) link

just a few days away, people. is anyone else definitely going?

btw, overnite bus tickets between nyc and montreal are $80 roundtrip on the hasid-bus.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 31 May 2004 06:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I was going to go, but stupid threats of being hired at a great job prevented me from securing tickets... Now that job doesn't seem to be interested in me anymore.. and it's kinda too late, and there's not too many folks on the bill performing who I really want to see that much. I'm escaping to Canada to a much closer city instead.

(which makes me sad as I really want to meet s1utsky)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:50 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm telling you, the richie hawtin show is going to be crazy. i can't believe no one else is going to mutek.

but if anyone is interested, apparently you have to be jewish to ride the $80 jew-bus. i told them i only went on high holidays, but they didn't believe me. so greyhound for $109

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 17:03 (nineteen years ago) link

ANOTHER Jewish conspiracy!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 17:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I wish I could go, but money and time prevent me from doing so. I've been the last three years.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 04:02 (nineteen years ago) link

mutek is pretty fun so far, except that I got hit by a car and I'm walking around with a limp and a bruise. that fucker. tonite is crackhaus, rip off artist, matthew herbert, more. the plastikman show was amazing, despite the techinical difficulties. also, lots of cute techno geeks.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 5 June 2004 22:04 (nineteen years ago) link

how was andy weatherall??

Elliot (Elliot), Saturday, 5 June 2004 22:07 (nineteen years ago) link

jaime, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 04:59 (fifteen years ago) link

ten months pass...

I'm thinking about going this year, but as a total newbie, I'd really appreciate some feedback on the following:

- Is Mutek night-based, or is it an all-day shindig like Sónar? At what time do the parties end?

- How far apart are the venues? Walking distance? Cabs? I'd probably stay at Quality Hôtel (3440 avenue du Parc)

- Til what time does the Sunday park thing go on? Am I gonna be able to get a good night's sleep for my Monday morning flight if I decide to stay til the end (considering R. Villalobos is playing)?

- How much money should I budget for meals/transportation/etc.? Is Montreal an expensive city? I'm thinking frugal mode here

Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Manuel, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 21:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Mutek has events every night, on the first three evenings, all day on the weekends, and has interstitial stuff during the day throughout. Parties usually end at different times depending on the day, about 2 or 3, and 6 on Saturday night, as the case in the last 2 years.

I'm not sure about this year, but generally they've been all in the same radius (I stayed at the Universite Quebec a Montreal residence last year) and was minutes to everything) except. . . Piknics on the weekend, which are readily accessible by public transit.

Sunday night thing usually goes to about 11, although they're having a
night event as well (Akufen!)

Montreal's not that expensive, you're in range of really inexpensive pizza and stuff, if need be.

Got my ticket in the mail today!

Can you do Demf-->mutek? There's some kind of railroad discount from Detroit to Montreal this year and that's a hell of a great way to spend a week and a half.
Mutek has awesome line-ups but Detroit's more of a 24 hour party kind of thing if you're looking for that. The worst thing about mutek is the venue where they had a lot of the events the time that I went, Metropolis. Seemed like more of a rock venue than a club and wasn't really comfortable, sound was also dodgy although maybe it was my ears. On the plus side Montreal has good food and the Piknic is a great party.

saudade, Thursday, 16 April 2009 01:14 (fifteen years ago) link

that hotel should put you pretty close to everything manuel - can totally walk to anywhere you'd want to go

two years pass...

I can't remember which thread was last bumped, so I'm bumping this one since it doesn't have a year in the title.

Anyone else going? I know a few Montreal ilxors will be around and I missed out on meeting up last year, but I'm game for it this time around. I'm staying fairly close to the festival area, near Chinatown, and as such will probably make it out to the older part of the city this time assuming it doesn't rain a lot.

Food tips, etc. very welcome.

I actually forgot about that part! Looking forward to Emptyset/Vainio at the minute, but it's one among many.

mh, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 03:26 (twelve years ago) link

OK, I am in Montreal and am staying really close to the venues. I've sent rrrobyn my email and stuff, anyone else feel free to hit me up that way or on this thread. I'll probably check Zing on my phone as wifi allows when I'm not watching stuff or dancing.

mh, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 22:45 (twelve years ago) link

wondering how long deadbeat will play. then i'll go to paranocturne. i'll wear a blue hoodie and keepin my feelin at the bar if someone want 2 say hi. feeling like everybody must get stoned for paranocturne.

How is Mutek this year. I've gone consecutively for the last four years, and it's always been my highlight of the year, but I wasn't able to make it this time around :(

EDB, Saturday, 4 June 2011 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

show i went to was horrible but i kind of absentmindedly followed some friends to it i prob couldve anticipated that i wouldve hated it if i had just done some research. im sure four tet &c tonight is going to be phenomnl. the jacques greene set was cool i thought, & weird techno in the savoy was fun made my brain feel weird

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 5 June 2011 10:08 (twelve years ago) link

really good mutek - plenty of surprises (mostly good) - loved sculpture, mika vainio, new stuff from deadbeat, murcof & antivj, amon tobin (sweet sweet 3D projection video), nice set from tomas jirku, aforementioned four tet, hours of fun from james holden. just going to bed. my afterparty was a walk home into the sunrise. ideal imo.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 5 June 2011 10:16 (twelve years ago) link

What she just said, only replace the sunrise party with me wussing out an hour early when my legs fell apart!

Plastikman set was also pretty crazy, and Pole was more techno than dub and was an excellent value for the locals who didn't have to pay.

mh, Sunday, 5 June 2011 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

mutek. done, re: me, officially as of this minute.
i always love the sunday night/morning house-y silly sweet vibe.
