i've never been to milwaukee -- for some reason, i've had an inexplicable urge to see that place since i was little. maybe too much laverne and shirley?
-- Eisbär (llamasfu...), May 12th, 2004.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:49 (nineteen years ago) link

laverne and shirley ... the show that made basement apartments seem cool!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Not with Lenny and Squiggy always in it. But better them than Carmine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:51 (nineteen years ago) link

You can pay $5 and get a brewery tour, four free beers at the brewery, a lovely pint glass and two tickets for free pints at nearby bars.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:52 (nineteen years ago) link

lenny & squiggy are the ONLY thing about that show that i currently like.

You can walk almost anywhere in the city in less than two hours.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:53 (nineteen years ago) link

what about the brewers?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:53 (nineteen years ago) link

The art museum is beautiful, the streets are relatively clean, the beer is cheap, and there is no shortage of old men peddling canolli. I probably spelled that wrong, but see, we have very cheap beer here, and I've been taking advantage of it this evening.

Home of PABST! MILLER! SPARKS! STEEL RESERVE! SCHLITZ! BLATZ! and any number of others, and yes, Brewers games are very, very fun. During the 7th inning stretch, they play "Roll Out the Barrels" and everyone polkas.
x-post...Yes, and the BEAST!

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, there is a vibrant local band scene, a gorgeous lakefront, and the best secondhand shopping I've found anywhere.
I do love drunken gushing about my hometown.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, Milwaukee has the (first? only?) Concertina Bar in America, and one of the biggest annual festivals in the country, and it's less than an hour from Madison and less than an hour and a half from Chicago if you are a decent driver, and you can go to dollar Pabst night and not be surrounded by hipsters, because there's always been dollar Pabst night here. And you can see Mike Schank on the bus. And it's so cheap to live here. And Milwaukee was voted "most lesbian-friendly city in America" last year, I think. Yay, I love it here. Yay, I love Steel Reserve!

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:05 (nineteen years ago) link

As a sidenote, I have always wanted to work in a brewery like Laverne and Shirley. Just hanging out all day with my best friend, making sure caps fit properly onto bottles. What could be better?
The answer is: NOTHING.
I had a friend who was a tourguide at the Miller brewery a year or two ago, and if you work there, you get a free case of beer every month, and two free cases in December, for the holidays. Should I try to get a job there?

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, I met Mike Schank while playing buckets outside Summerfest one year.

Anyway, Kirsten OTM, she has it covered.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Only tried it a few times -- to me Milwaukee looks like Chicago after a neutron-bomb attack.

I've been out in Milwaukee on a Saturday night, and it STILL looks like that. Not a soul to be seen. Unless the Brewers are playing or they're in college, seems everyone just sits home with a 6-pack. No thanks.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, Ann, aren't you from some tiny town in the middle of nowhere, Wisconsin? I'd think you'd appreciate Milwaukee after that. And if there was not a soul to be seen, you were clearly in the wrong part...unless you're someone like me. I happen to seek out the vacant parts of the city on weekends so that I can go to a bar and actually have a conversation with my friends, instead of being smushed up against a wall and feeling like I need a hearing aid.
Jordan, doesn't Mike Schank RULE? I see him on the bus a few times a month, and he just makes my day every time.
I wish I wasn't so drunk, because I could probably make a better case for Milwaukee if my head was clear.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:16 (nineteen years ago) link

wait there's old men on the street selling canolis?!!?? that means Milwaukee is a third of the way towards being my utopia.

Maybe I'm just pissed because a junkie from Milwaukee stole my candy-apple red bass guitar and sold it for drugs before -- you know, I think he may have died of an overdose, come to think of it. Music kills! Anyway, I started in a tiny town but I wud gone soon's ah could be. Wow, I wish I were drunk. I spent all my money on CDs. Have fun!

Ooh ooh, there's Jimmy John's and Pizza Shuttle and Atomic Records and Gallery Night, and unpredictable weather and ten degrees cooler near the lake and McKinley Marina and Sendik's and people who are unpretentious and will stop to give you cash if you're out of gas, and cheap, huge breakfasts at Jean Pierre and Riverwest basement shows and Beans and Barley and tons of darling Scandinavian boys and people who say "Uffda" and strong coffee and fried cheese and UWM having one of the best creative writing grad programs in the country, and I want to get in but I think I won't.
x-post...Oops, what are the other two thirds?

I was kind of let down by Milwaukee; is Madison any better? Clinton was speaking in a park when I was there: that was the extent of excitement to be found.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:43 (nineteen years ago) link

madison rained on me, once, and wasn't minneapolis (maybe for the best), another time.

I bet it's okay, really.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Madison's all right but Milwaukee's a little more diverse.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Madison has its good points. It can be very pretty, I like living here, and I'm pretty fond of the music scene (the bands and people, if not the venues for the most part). I'm pretty sick of State Street/central downtown and there isn't much else around, but I'm warming to the Willy Street/east side scene more.

(x-post, agreed)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I should go there sometime. I just imagined it being dirty and industrial, but it sounds kind of cool.

I liked Madison. The parks and view of the buildings and water are beautiful on the drive in. The shops are cute, though a bit artsy in an 80s sort of way.

Haha they listed Real Chili in that article. You can get into drunken oyster cracker fights. It's fun.

4 Words: Frozen Custard at Kopp's.

OTM. That stuff is addictive.

Kiersten has covered it well. Milwaukee's a great city. I love the lakefront. Of course it's quieter than Chicago, it's a much much smaller city. I like that about it, actually.

Also, when the wind is blowing in the right direction, everything smells like brewery.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I just acquired a massive craving for a Kopp's fish sandwich.

I think on my week off I should do things that I never actually did while living in Milwaukee, like take a brewery tour and go to the art museum.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Jordan, you totally have to! You should go on the Lakefront Brewery tour. That's the one I mentioned upthread. The only thing that sucks about the tour is that they have Bernie Brewer's old slide into the giant beer mug, and it just sits there and makes you want to slide down it so, so bad, but they won't let you( batting eyelashes doesn't even help) because some bitch cut her hand on it or something and tried to sue. I think I remember the Miller tour being pretty fun, too, but you don't get as much free stuff.
And you should also get drunk and go to the Domes and watch how excited old people get over exotic plants.
Let me know when you're going to be here, anyway. We can go to Art Smart's Dart Mart and buy Shit in a Can. Or something.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Jordan, Saturdays are optimum for Lakefront. Riverwest shows are happening, although the Machines are out of town til the 11th.

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 16:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I absolutely despised living there in my angsty 20s. But I think it's a fine place to, er, settle down in one's slightly less angsty 30s. Haven't lived there in a while so I'm not sure if any of the below are still in biz but:

Fave bars are At Random (where Peg Bundy would go to meet her secret lover...amaaaazing decor and positively jaw-dropping drinks...share a Tiki Bowl with someone) and This Is It (where Al Bundy would go to meet his secret gay lover...VERY difficult to find even when you're standing right in front it @ 418 E. Wells Street)

Woodland Pattern Bookstore - tons of poetry books but I went for the art music vinyl (e.g. Joan LaBarbara, Robert Ashley, etc.) and the great monthly avant-garde films

The Cactus Club - fave place to see a band like my beloved BRMC (still open?)

Basilica of St. Josaphat - We lived LITERALLY across the street from this and never went in. :(

The Calatrava - Gorgeous but, um, you can't really put much art in it. Soooo Milwaukee. But the art museum is indeed lovely.

Atomic Records - Most of the record stores I loved are prolly gone but I'm sure this one is still going. Tad pricey but always found sooo much great shit in the Compilations section.

Food - The only thing I love about MKE over any other city I've lived in is the food. Your ass gets FED in Brew City! Plentiful and unpretentious for the most part. Love the Greek family restaurants! Jalisco's! Tres Hermanos! Grecian Delight! Shahrazad!

Lots of places that are fine to visit once (The Domes, Pabst Mansion [still open?]) but after that...

Vile, avoid like the plague, should be razed: Summerfest

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 17:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Cactus Club is still open. Saw Neil Hamburger there last month (and dined at the booth next to him at Palomino before the show).

I'll have to stop in to At Random for an alcoholic goblet sometime. I've walked past it a number of times and would probably have mistook it for a public library if it didn't have the sign on the side.

I love how if you order a bloody mary in this town it is customary to be served with a High Life chaser. The cheddar and sausage garnish was less surprising.

eleven months pass...

hey, i'm pro'lly going to milwaukee for a few days in a few weeks.

any suggestions?

what are the best venues for live music? are there good milwaukee-area music and film calendars i can check out?

vintage stores? record stores? restaurants? parks?

by another name (amateurist), Sunday, 15 August 2010 06:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure literally every good record store in Milwaukee closed in the last couple of years. Beyond that, I dunno...

I don't know enough to make worthwhile recommendations about live music or vintage stores-- maybe some else here can help you out with that.

The Union Theater on the UW-Milwaukee campus usually shows interesting things but they don't publish their film calendar until school starts for the fall semester. Right now they're closed for the summer, and otherwise the only film venues of note are the Landmark theaters on the east side, which are vintage buildings and really pretty, but just show basic new arthouse releases. If you come between September 23rd and October 3rd, the 2010 Milwaukee Film Festival will be going on at different theaters around town, but they haven't released their calendar yet either.

Any park on Lake Michigan is basically pretty nice. Lake Park and Veterans Park on the lakefront north of the art museum are probably the ones most worth checking out for a tourist.

Restaurants, I dunno. Comet Cafe has good food and drinks but gets incredibly crowded on the weekends. I'd recommend eating fish fry somewhere if you're around on a Friday for the full Milwaukee experience. Also, get frozen custard somewhere, preferably either at a Kopp's location (where you can also enjoy a delicious cheeseburger with the works) or at Leon's on the south side. Jake's Deli makes really good corned beef sandwiches during lunch hours if you don't mind going to the inner city to get it.

What else... The Lakefront Brewery tour is the most fun brewery tour in town and they make the best beer too. If you're a beer snob, I'm pretty sure that the best bars for that are in the bar district along Kinnickinnic Avenue, including Sugar Maple and the Palm Tavern. The best liquor store in town is Discount Liquor on Oklahoma Avenue. Huge, cheap, and they have a really choice selection of beers. And, um, I guess that's it. Milwaukee is a pretty nice place to be when there's leaves on the trees, so enjoy, I guess!

We are coming upon the best time of the year to visit Milwaukee - between the end of the summer into early fall. What types of outdoor recreation are nearby, I can't remember?

i like barbecue ribs (u s steel), Sunday, 15 August 2010 10:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't get out a ton, but there are a lot of parks with mountain bike trails in southeastern Wisconsin. Maybe the Kettle Moraine region would be the best for that? Or just go out for a drive and maybe go up a hiking trail to a lookout tower like the one by Sheboygan. Also muskie fishing or whatever on any of the lakes in the area. It's the one month of the year that Lake Michigan isn't too cold to swim in, so you could do that or go parasailing or rent a jetski at Veteran's Park. You can also rent rollerblades at Veteran's Park and go up and down all the parks by the beach on Lincoln Memorial Drive. Bradford Beach in Milwaukee has a ton of nets set up for beach volleyball that are open free to the public. Also there are a ton of good public golf courses in the area.

Well, I'm a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers began visiting here in the late 16th century.

This is a touristy thing but I thought the Pabst mansion was actually pretty impressive.

Also there's a massive used book store downtown. I don't remember what it's called but it shouldn't be that hard to find. MASSIVE.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 16 August 2010 13:10 (thirteen years ago) link

If it's the book store I'm thinking of, it's godawful. The owner's a prick; the used vinyl is sealed with tape which ruins the jacket (they honestly think someone's going to make off with a $2 Sa-Fire record with no jacket???); and, worst of all, there's nothing to buy. It's full of disogranized junk, more a graveyard than a store (although the wiki above suggests that it's improved).

Atomic Records - Most of the record stores I loved are prolly gone but I'm sure this one is still going.

Ugh I should have done my research. Atomic closed six months before I wrote that! :( RIP. Here's a Popmatters requiem all about it.

Also there's a massive used book store downtown.

I guess you were talking about Renaissance Books, but speaking of massive used bookstores in downtown Milwaukee, there's also Downtown Books, which is on Wisconsin Avenue east of Water Street and has a much better used comic book selection than Ren Books does.

Also, the UWM Union Theatre just mailed out their fall 2010 film calendar. Hopefully they'll update their website pretty soon. Lourdes, Trash Humpers, the films of Bruce Conner-- any of this sound interesting? Also, mini Kurosawa fest at the end of September.

I love that there IS a used bookstore in the airport, but I find their prices weirdly high and never actually buy anything there.

The Milwaukee Art Museum is great -- as you'd expect from Milwaukee, some good German Expressionism in the permanent collection, and as you might not expect, some good, weird folk art too.

I have always heard good things about Serbian food there, esp. Three Brothers, but have never been. I like the Polish restaurant in the Public Market.

Endorsing the art museum, with its flapping wings and fun and manageable yet extensive collection. The public market had a great lobster dinner (I know, not exactly local fare) for $12. Waterpark in the Hilton Hotel was great for kids and isn't just for hotel guests.
