WTF am I supposed to do with my time until October?

Also this from Yahoo:

B61 (calstars), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:39 (twenty years ago) link

i cant get excited about it until I know what year it takes place in, and what music it will have.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:44 (twenty years ago) link

If the gangsta-goth logo is any indication, maybe early nineties?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:45 (twenty years ago) link

san andreas, like the fault? what's there? anyways, from the logo it looks like it would be lots of snoop dogg and MC Eiht

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:47 (twenty years ago) link

If it's early nineties, there might be a GRUNGE STATION, ACK.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:51 (twenty years ago) link

I agree with the comments about the logo = early 90s. And rumor has it as being based on either San Fran or LA.

B61 (calstars), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:53 (twenty years ago) link

ooh early/mid 90s r&b is my fave! jodeci, swv, jade, adina howard, johnny gill, etc

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:54 (twenty years ago) link

Sealab 2021 and Aqua Teen Hunger Force set 2 come out in June, that should kill a couple of weeks

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:54 (twenty years ago) link

Grunge, gangsta, metal, new jack, adult contemporary, Latin (assuming there's a quasi-LA location)...anything else?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:58 (twenty years ago) link

San Andreas is the fault line that runs through San Francisco.

1990 SF: Grateful Dead ("touch of grey"), Metallica, 4 Non Blondes, Faith No More, Digital Underground, Chris Isaak, Too $hort, Joe Satriani, Green Day, Primus, Van Hagar

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:06 (twenty years ago) link

Oh man, it's too early for '90s nostalgia. I was hoping that if they were to do it in a Bay Area/West Coast venue that they'd set it in the early '70s -- golden age of funk and pimps and Quinn Martin Productions and post-Bullitt swankness and Dirty Harry and Chinatown kung fu chic. And Tower of Power > Red Hot Chili Peppers. Besides, True Crime already sopped up most of the g-funk West Coast post-'90s atmosphere. Not very well, but still.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:23 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, but the problem with setting too far into the past is the cars -- presumably they wouldn't be supercharged enough for real good game-play (though I don't know anything cars, honestly).

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:26 (twenty years ago) link

you just basically requested Nate to start posting pictures of 70s muscle machines, you realize

(OK that's enough)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:32 (twenty years ago) link

If the Sealab set does NOT contain "Quinn's Vacation" I am SO going to lose my shit.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago) link

Nate's idea would be awesome. Licensing real cars would be nice, too.

Stuart (Stuart), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:35 (twenty years ago) link

my friend works for the post-production company of Rockstar Games....yes, it will be on the gangsta tip! apparently it starts with you in jail and you have to break out...you can even get cool haircuts like fades and gumby cuts.

yes, phil, i'm with you on the early/mid 90s vibe. it's all about "Gangsta Lean" by DRS

waxyjax (waxyjax), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 04:29 (twenty years ago) link

san andreas was also featured an area in Grand Theft Auto 1, if i remembered correctly! Probably nothing to do with this though.

Pre-cars grand theft auto would be great, you'd have to steal horses and stuff, and get into sword fights. actually no that would be shit.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 10:32 (twenty years ago) link

er, you know you can make your own soundtrack to the gta games with mp3s? just checking...

also, grand-theft-horse-o would be good. i want that. stat.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 10:34 (twenty years ago) link

they better have some kind of acid house station

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 10:53 (twenty years ago) link

It was pretty obvious the game would be called San Andreas anyway, as the levels on the first game were Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas. Logical progression, y'see?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 10:55 (twenty years ago) link

Predictions for celebrity voiceovers?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 10:55 (twenty years ago) link

MC HAMMER!

"please Hammer, don't hurt 'em!"

chris (chris), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 10:59 (twenty years ago) link

meaning you can put any music you like in the game...

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 11:02 (twenty years ago) link

yeah but it's not the same as flicking around.

also you can't do this on ps2.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 11:03 (twenty years ago) link

it's also possible to turn the music off and listen to your ipod

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 11:05 (twenty years ago) link

Man, I hope I finish Vice City by then. I'm not very far (at the part where you have to steal the boat), and I realized I'm not very good at the missions where you have to shoot a bunch of dudes.

(btw this BETTER come out for Xbox right away!)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 14:42 (twenty years ago) link

It's exclusive to PS2.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 14:45 (twenty years ago) link

oooh i am on the very last mission and i plan to complete it tonight! i'm so glad there's a gap between march and october when i can have an actual, real life. (er, spent posting to ilx..)

exclusive to PS2 = "they've paid us cash money, just hang on for a year or so"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 14:50 (twenty years ago) link

I'm a bit disappointed as I heard it was to take place in Vegas. Oh well, im sure its still the shit.

Chris 'The Big Ragu' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:09 (twenty years ago) link

Rumor has it Dave Chappelle will be one of the voices. HELL YES.

..and be half-way through Jade Empire.

I get the feeling that every couple weeks this thread will be revived, and like an idiot I'll click on it thinking "oh yeah, new information about the game has been leaked" and instead it'll be some babbling googler. Argh.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 3 April 2004 14:55 (twenty years ago) link

What? I managed to link you to Amazon's hastily photoshopped 'GTA logo/'18' sticker/Rockstar Games logo' on the default PS2-style box-shot.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 3 April 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

Well, yep, looks like they'll have an acid house station, after all.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 4 April 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

I'm playing this on PC and I got pretty used to the controls. Flying a plane (or especially a helicopter) is still a pain in the butt but I've managed to figure it out more or less. The helicopter camera sucks times infinity. Driving any car or vehicle is pretty nice, using WASD to steer and the right mouse button to break. The camera's a bit slower than VC on centering from behind the car but with a mouse you can swing it around and look over hills and curves you are about to hit, which is nice.

I beat the game, i loved the characters and the storyline and all that. Now I'm left with a huge world with lots of races i can enter. I don't think I'm going to get 100% because I just don't care and for the moment this game has entertained the crap out of me. Spending hours looking for those missing horseshoes sort of seems like it would take away from what a cool experience that was! I wouldn't mind going back and playing some of those missions over again but sadly you can't just scroll through a list and pick one out. I'd play the one where you hijack the Hydra and dogfight with other jets. Also the one where you ride a motorcycle onto an airplane.

Samuel Jackson was awesome in this. Peter Fonda too!

I still haven't seen any tanks in this, oddly enough. Mental note: buy a bunch of weapons, stake out the pirate ship, start blowing up cars and don't stop 'til I've gotten a tank for myself.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 01:35 (eleven years ago) link

I just finished The Lost and Damned and it's weak, watery Methadone compared to this. Gotta get a PS2 and a copy of San Andreas. And Katamari Damacy.

Amoeba, Fish, Monkey, Shame (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 03:25 (eleven years ago) link

ballad of gay tony is a lot of fun in what it adds, but the missions are mostly just more "duck behind a thing, waste 50 guys, run to next room, repeat". otoh there's helicopters that shoot missiles so.

Clay, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 03:39 (eleven years ago) link

L&D and gay tony were good but they reminded you how little life and creativity they put into the missions/story of the main game imo

goole, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 03:51 (eleven years ago) link

<i>I still haven't seen any tanks in this, oddly enough.</i>

Fly south with your jetpack into Area 51 from the northeast, staying between the eastern fence and the row of garages. There's a tank in the last or second-to-last garage. Jack it, drive it to your hangar at the airstrip, then book it on foot to the tower to save your game & get rid of your wanted stars. Repeat until you have many tanks.

This works on ps2, no idea of vehicle spawns are different for pc.

RCMP, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 06:15 (eleven years ago) link

doing the vigilante missions in a tank is hilarious and a piece of piss

Shrimpface Killah (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 06:18 (eleven years ago) link

I really liked the BoGT, but I thought the emphasis was on the characters & the dialogue, to the point where it took away from the sprawling fun of San Andreas.

I just hope in GTA5 they figure a better way to balance the two, or to provide the great interaction and a good city without constraining it.

Also, ten bucks says they actually hide Sasquatch in the forest this time.

Steam Sale Jonesin' (kingfish), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 06:18 (eleven years ago) link

Also, I like the run of protagonists who are relatively self-aware that they're psychopathic killers surrounded by idiots and who remark on the bullshitness of their situations.

Steam Sale Jonesin' (kingfish), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 06:20 (eleven years ago) link

now try MTA

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 14:19 (eleven years ago) link

I also LOL at CJ's date dialogue, which is either "Oh, wow!" and "That is so interesting, I'm just gonna listen."

saints row 3 is the closest i've come to experiencing gta: san andreas joy since san andreas. i think it's relatively cheap now too. great game.

The main thing that turned me off IV was the constant social maintenance. I hate using a phone, checking emails, etc., in real life as it is.

Yeah that bugged me too.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 20:56 (eleven years ago) link

I missed the leveled power-ups that came with doing certain things. If I'm going to drive a cab or fire truck or ambulance, I want stat bumps or gear for doing so much of that. Same with collectibles; give me new shit if I grab 50 whatzits for doing so much.

Waitamin, there weren't even ambulance/firetruck side quests in IV, were there?

Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 20:57 (eleven years ago) link

no there weren't. Vigilante missions but you got NOTHING for completing them.

PSOD (Ste), Thursday, 2 August 2012 10:14 (eleven years ago) link

GTA IV was incredibly unrewarding compared to San Andreas. Also far too po faced.

hyggeligt, Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

Even though i beat the game, there is still plenty to do, as I only have 78% completed. Finding the missing horshoes and stuff will be a pain, but i just found SAMA. San Andreas Mission Analyzer. AWESOME!

What is it?

Reads your savefile and gives you a rundown of your completion status on all missions in the game.
Shows you the unique jumps that haven't been done on a map. Optionally also shows landing zones and camera positions for the jumps.
Shows you the gang tags, snapshots, horseshoes and oysters that haven't been done on a map.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:02 (eleven years ago) link

I have one missing horseshoe in my saved game. The pay off is brilliant but I refuse to go all around again finding them. Very frustrating.

hyggeligt, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:19 (eleven years ago) link

I likely already mentioned years ago in this thread that I had 99/100 gang tags. I went around one night with a jet pack and checked them all out, and every one of them was there, meaning that one was likely half-completed.

And damned if I'm really going to try to spray paint each one again to find out.

pplains, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:24 (eleven years ago) link

I was racing the Chiliad Challenge and having a rough time of it, and I just kept respawning the jet so i could fly up to the top of the mountain and try again. I just did so and jumped out of the plane, and it dropped like a rock, landing on the top of the mountain, and sliding down the bike path. When i started the race, the ground was on fire and everyone ahead of me crashed into the wreckage!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 25 August 2012 18:55 (eleven years ago) link

Ugh i fell off the mountain too many times, came in 2nd by a FRACTION of a second. Unlike other racing games, if you lose here, you can pull out a chainsaw or rocket launcher and go nuts. Very satisfying.

The racing is fun too! I didn't think it would be this fun but it is. I think there are more races here than there are in many dedicated racing games.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 25 August 2012 19:01 (eleven years ago) link

Found it very frustrating that if you lost a race in Episodes from Liberty City everyone just rode away at top speed before you could get a shot in. GET BACK HERE AND LET ME HAVE MY VENGEANCE.

I just did the BMX Challenge, and it was hella fun biking in the skate park. I realized you can hold down jump (CTRL on computer) before you release it to make him jump really high and it made it WAY easier than otherwise.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 26 August 2012 07:16 (eleven years ago) link

Even the busy work of finding these photo shots is fun. Oh no, I have to fly my jetpack to the top of a skyscraper.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 26 August 2012 07:39 (eleven years ago) link

Oh man, the jetpack. That was the greatest thing.

Yeah, Amazon jumps the gun on pre-orders like that. You'll be sitting in something for years. I think they're as bad as GameStop that way.

Good Lord, autocorrect fixes the GameStop capitalization.

one month passes...

I'm halfway through my second playthrough of Skyrim and really considering dropping it and going back and replaying San Andreas. Can anyone suggest a good graphics mod? I got the ENB but it just makes everything hazy, fuzzy, and too bloomy. Maybe the somewhat cartoony graphics are just fitting to the overall play. I guess the main thing I'd like is better lighting, HD textures, etc. Any recommendations?

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 25 November 2012 17:19 (eleven years ago) link

dunno I don't like my pc version, I only ever play the MTA version and that mods itself automatically.

dumb question i could probably google but i doubt i'd understand the answer, but have people somehow been able to mod their xbox360 gta4 games? last time i went online to play it, dudes were fragging me in all kindsa ways that shouldn't have been possible, and the airport was awash with ramps and jumpable obstacles.

yeah its possible

These are my every day balloons (Ste), Monday, 26 November 2012 11:21 (eleven years ago) link

I've been running it with ENB and while the reflections on the cars look AMAZING, it unfortunately puts the reflective properties on assets that don't really need it. The wood in buildings is all shiny like it was petrified. While roads do look cool with some reflective light, it ends up spilling over onto the sidewalks and even part of the grass, so it all looks kinda gross, like the world is made of out greasy plastic. The cars DO look amazing but that's about it, and it seems like there really isn't much of a way to just specify reflection on those.

The lighting too. The first time i was driving, it was really pretty cool to have the headlights of the car behind me light up my car. But to be honest I prefer the original lighting scheme. It's so dreamy and has a nice yellow Californian glow to it that kind of gets lost with the ENB. Everything is alot darker, and it kind of makes things look even more fake than they already are.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 30 November 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

Replaying this i realized half of the fun is just the crazy AI that underlines the world. NPCs are always off doing something or other, cops will get into a crazy chase that is completely unrelated to what you are doing, etc. I feel like most Open World games fail to really amp up the non-player action taking place.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 30 November 2012 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

It's like the AI is primed for storytelling. Just randomly doing cab missions I brought a woman from the beach to a mansion and then brought someone from the mansion to a hospital before bringing a few more people there. Is the AI having a a house party at that mansion? Did somebody overdose on something at this party? The world is built of so many pop culture archetypes that things just sort of randomly interlock into these suggested cliche pop art narratives.

Show but don't tell is a great game-making rule. Rather than me talking to an NPC and them spelling it out through boring dialog boxes you create the kind of environments with dynamic AI conducive to interactive storytelling between player and game.
