Australia's travel warning to Indonesia has been updated to say that terrorists are in a very advanced stage of planned attacks.

The Department of Foreign Affairs update on Indonesia is the second in less than a week.

"We continue to receive a stream of credible reporting suggesting that terrorists are in the very advanced stages of planning attacks in Indonesia," the warning posted on the DFAT website says.

"Attacks could occur at any time, anywhere in Indonesia and could be directed at any locations known to be frequented by foreigners.

"Recent credible reporting suggests that international hotels frequented by westerners in Jakarta are being targeted in current terrorist planning."

The warning says potential targets include embassies, international schools, office buildings and shopping malls.

The US embassy reopened on May 31 after closing for several days following an unspecified security threat.

Police in Jakarta have called on hotels to improve security.

The government is maintaining its warning that non-essential travel to Indonesia should be deferred.
