Well what? Make sense man!!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

God, sometimes* ILE is** nothing more than comedians trying out nonsense-words to see if they provoke laughter. Aren't there better ways of doing this?

*all the time

**or, just as likely, I'm missing some hilarious pop culture reference. In which case, go on, laugh at the spaz.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:48 (twenty years ago) link

Sorry Nordy, nothing to do with you, just in a bad mood.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:48 (twenty years ago) link

Um, it's a new movie. I want to see it. Directed by Terry Zwigoff, director of Crumb and Ghost World, and starring Billy Bob Thornton.

Baz the spaz.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:50 (twenty years ago) link

It's the first film I've looked forward to seeing in AGES. But the preview makes it look quite bad -- and the screenwriters wrote Cats & Dogs.

But, in the Christmas spirit, my favourite line from Ghost World.

Rebecca: This is so bad it's almost good.
Enid: This is so bad it's gone past good and back to bad again.

Sorry Nordy, nothing to do with you, just in a bad mood.

Easy, Mark! Yes, it is an example of "the filmic arts", on general release in the US as of today. It looks quite bad, but some of the reviews has been surprising.

Amazing. Like a comedic version of Bad Lieutenant - as in, the plot of the movie is right there in the title, and seldom veers from said plot (or lack therof) - BillyBob is terrific (tho I must admit I have sat through each of his movies, including the abhorrent Pushing Tin - I'm a big fan) and the movie is definitely worth seeing. I'm already psyched for the DVD!

Best line in Ghostworld = "He'd better be careful he doens't get AIDS when he date-rapes her." (Said of football captain and prom queen, I think.)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 29 November 2003 11:48 (twenty years ago) link

I went to see it today, tanked up on coffee and with no expectations to speak of, laughed like an idiot for at least the first 45 minutes. Do I even need to say it's a one-joke movie? Billy Bob gives good cuss, Bernie Mac is still not as funny as I expect him to be - his best face (the surly yet dumbstruck one) is still good, but he doesn't deliver on it. John Ritter has a "nice" little turn. RIP. A really odd choice for local hero Terry Zwigoff, this film has the feel of an "inbetweener", but is still well worth the matinee price I paid.

I saw it at a matinee, and four elderly people walked about halfway through - I guess they were expecting The Santa Clause - missing the redemption. I like how Zwigoff is the anti-Alexander Payne, it would be too easy to be misanthropic with the characters and topics he dealt with.

The ending isn't as bad as I'd been led to believe, and for once the really-dark ending wouldn't have satisfied me.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 05:07 (twenty years ago) link

At least Trainspotting 2 has decent original material to draw from (Glue + Porno)

I wasn't too impressed by Porno but it's been so long I can't remember why. That and Trainspotting are all I've read by him and I've heard his work is hit and miss so maybe I should give Glue a shot.

diary of a mod how's life (wins), Monday, 21 November 2016 19:26 (seven years ago) link

i'd weigh in that the original had a lot of weird factors that contributed to its existence

the Coen brothers doing uncredited script doctoring, Zwigoff directing but the editing keeping it light (the director's cut is somehow darker and less funny), Cloris Leachman as the senile grandmother....

yeah, no high hopes here, but i will watch it
