Can you sing?

I can't. I can't even sing a full octave, and the notes I can sing are weak and croaky. It depresses the hell out of me.

Melissa W, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No problem hitting the notes, but my voice lacks something called bass. In fact, I'm half excited whenever I get a head cold, because I know my voice will one octave lower for a few days. If someone invented the pill for morning voice, I'd be the first guinea pig.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

In grade school another kid hit me when our class had to sing for a school assembly, because my horribly loud and off-key voice annoyed him so much. That pretty much sums it up. ;-)

Ahem.

Graham, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dunno. You can ask anyone who's ever been a car with me tho.

Kim, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, how I wish. Because if I could really sing instead of half there half not, YOU'D ALL BE SORRY. Or rather, you'd all be invited to my climactic 10-night-straight appearances at the Hollywood Bowl or something, wherein I would floor the place with a rendition of Soft Cell's "Say Hello Wave Goodbye" that would create a flood of splashy tears.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes, but not well.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Weirdly enough I've been making a living from 'singing' for a decade or more now. I still don't know if what I do is 'singing', though.

If you consider people like Robert Wyatt good singers, then you might consider me one. But I still get reviews saying '...of course, Momus can't sing for toffee...' Which annoys me, of course, because I hit all the notes and inflect rather well, I think. I remember Mike Alway saying, when he helped me make the first Momus records, 'I like how you sing as if you were very, very handsome'.

The secret is writing the songs in such a way that you disguise your limitations. And, as John Shuttleworth knows so well, microphone technique.

Momus, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

'I like how you sing as if you were very, very handsome'.

That has to be one of the best backhanded compliments of all time. Did he intend the double meaning? Robert Wyatt...hm...*runs Ultramarine collaborations through head*...you know, I can sort of see it.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can't sing either but I can act, and sometimes that all singing is.

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

'I like how you sing as if you were very, very handsome'.

That has to be one of the best backhanded compliments of all time.

Yes, Mike never paid his artists with money, he paid them with compliments like this. Then you realised that you'd been robbed.

Momus, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Lovely man, though. I'm still working with him to this day, so the compliments obviously worked.

Momus, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And there you go. Unlike a certain bald Scot we could all name.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Other than yourself, of course. Oh dear, are you two now doppelgangers? Perish the thought!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

As I recently mentioned on ILM, I can "hit the notes", but sound awful. Listening to far too many Bowie records as a kid has made my singing voice a dreadful Anthony Newley parody.

Sean, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I am very much a fan of the Momus-mentioned approach to vocalizing: sing how you can. Things work out okay when I record like this. Unfortunately, though, I can't sing well and loudly at the same time, so my stage options are either to sound bleat-y or not be heard at all. God bless the age of the studio-bound auteur.

The last Rufus Wainwright album, however, has taught me that I can project pretty well in a register I'd never even tried to tackle before.

Nitsuh, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You should hear me play pi-anner.

Tom, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can't sing quite as low as I used to because my choir teacher made me sing soprano for two years (AAARR ARR ARR, just because HE'S a soprano doesn't mean I should be); now I have switched teachers and get to sing alto again so I am very joyful.. I sing a great deal at school, but I don't know if I do it well. My voice is quiet and I have trouble with breath control. Other than that I think I'm okay.

Maria, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

WHen I was going through my "Brian Wilson is A Genius" phase I tried very hard to sing in angelic perfection. But after a while you begin to realise that you have to be your self, and most of what 's interesting about singing is the projection of personality. Even goldenthroats like Jeff Buckley still add their own quirks, or they'd sound drab. Like those silly singers that sing in musicals...they all sound the same...faceless.

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

HELL YES! i'm a fantastic singer. i sing in the shower. i have a range of three octaves. i wish i could reach the low notes though, sometimes i can when i smoke heaps, but then i usually can't reach the high notes.

di, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

the *only* music i can convincingly sing is latter-day swans, particularly from the soundtracks/swans are dead era...my singing voice is DEEP, and thats just about the only deep voiced music i listen to on a semi-regular basis. i also do a milk curdling black metal shtick and a WICKED louis armstrong impression, although i'm not sure if that counts.

jess, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have a fair voice, depending on how much my allergies are messing with me. A friend promised a karaoke night in the near future; I cannot WAIT to sing some Neil Diamond songs, damn it. I'll have to buy a spangly shirt & poof out my hair.

But, yeah, I've been known to carry a tune fairly well, from time to time.

David Raposa, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh my brother can sing though. He's an Elvis impersonator. My aunt sings too (Kari is her stage name) and I think she wrote some football song or something...

Kim, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

My voice goes far beyond "quirky". It's just tuneless and croaky and whispery and nasal. As a child, I had perfect pitch and a thin, high voice, that was fantastic. And now I can barely hit any notes at all, and it pains me to hear my own voice because I know I'm not on tune.

While my Raw London Edge is renowned amongst all those who have been to the KoC karaoke I do accept that I have an appalling voice. This is quite unfortunate as I like singing and I always remember all the words so I want to sing. I am jealous of people who are always singing and don't make people turn away in horror and disgust.

chris, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have a range and can stick to it pretty well, but my voice is not all that distinctive. This is why I have developed a secondary voice - affectionately known as my paedophile voice, which is certainly distinctive and makes people scared.

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Is it true that most soloist musicians are just frustrated singers, so they sing through their instruments?

There's something incredibly cathartic about singing, it never fails to cheer me up, even if it does depress the hell out of everyone else. But like dear old Paddy McAloon says, whether it soothes or annoys, in itself it's a joy. There's plenty of unconventional singers out there who are still great vocalists - Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman, Darren Hefner etc. Being a great singer is all about finding your own voice rather than trying to emulate Sealion Dion.

Trevor, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The fact that I am a crap singer is the tradgedy of my life.

I have spent a lot of money on singing lessons, but to no avail. I'm still crap. I *love* singing sooo much though. I have to do it when I'm alone.

Andrew L, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can sing, yes. If you threw equal parts of Morrissey, David Gahan, and Prince into a blender, you'd get a nasty mess. However, if you mixed their voices, you'd have something approaching my pop voice. My classical voice sounds like... umm... well, I'm a baritone, but my voice has a strong tenor resonance. It's odd.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like everybody's singing voice, I always like peoples singing voices, and I hardly ever get it when people say 'that person can't sing.' The only time singing slightly annoys me is when someone who's been trained to sing sings in their trained voice loudly right beside you at university in the music department. But that doesn't count as singing anyway. That's just a meaningless noise.

maryann, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I hardly ever sing in front of people; hence I don't have an external measure of how good my voice is.

it seems like a lot of (straight?) guys who do sing casually in front of their friends do so in an intentionally off-key ,ugly way, or else their singing is so mumbly and restrained that you can't make a judgment either way. I'm guessing they hold back for fear of appearing too silly or too gay or too showy. although it's possible that I'm being too generous and they really just have crap voices overall.

f-ing brilliant! I can't decide what I like best: the juxtaposition of fat synth lines against otherwise lo-fi acoustic instruments and singing, the randomness of the synth lick around 0:37 and the drum rolls, the way it sort of reminds me of Nick Drake's "The Thoughts of Mary Jane", the hey-I've-noticed-that-too-but-never-said-anything lyrics....

I was a passable singer until a few years ago; now my higher range is completely gone and my lower range struggles to stay in tune and not be scrathcy. It sucks, because I never got to record many of the songs I had in my head.

I am glad I smoked for a while. It put more of my own personality into my voice. Voice lessons damaged my voice. I hope quitting smoking makes it easier.

Be careful with voice lessons, choral music is very anti-jazz, anti-folk, anti-gospel. Which is my style.

I *love* to sing (in the car, in the shower, rockband, karaoke), but I sing like a drain. But I have fun when I do it so I figure fuck it.

I can usually mimic what I have heard someone else sing with a fair amount of precision, unless it is a singer with world-class chops who's really laying it down, which of course leaves out a large chunk of recorded music. My voice is a pleasant baritone with an average range. I do OK, as long as I am singing solo and can hear myself. Singing with other voices is much harder for me. It is def hard for me to transpose to another key from the one in which I learned a song.
