As a younger person, I found his characters supremely annoying, but I've mostly gotten over it.
(there is a character in Jaws who has the same full name as me who meets a gruesome end)

Saw a nicely restored digital print of Duddy Kravitz this afternoon. Seemed slightly more patchy to me today than when I used to watch it over and over on TV in the '70s--the lead actress is a bit bland, for one thing--but excellent nonetheless. Denholm Elliot's Bar Mitzvah film was as insanely funny as ever. Don't know if this is Dreyfuss's very best performance, but it's right in there with American Graffiti, Jaws, and Close Encounters. They had a Skype hookup with Ted Kotcheff after the film--you'd never guess he's in his 80s. He had a funny story about Mordecai Richler and Saidye Bronfman from when the film opened in '74:
Bronfman: "Well, Mordecai, you're looking well for a St. Urbain slumboy."Richler: "And you're looking well, Saidye, for a bootlegger's widow."

Dreyfuss badly wants to do Duddy II, Ted Kotcheff says. NO.
I forgot how much Dreyfuss sweats in that movie, esp the first 20 minutes.

Screened Inserts last night. X-rated chamber film from '76 about the peep show business in the 1930s w/Dreyfuss doing excellent scenery chewing as a washed up silent film director reduced to a six picture deal filming porn in his living room for producer Bob Hoskins. The rest of cast is as follows: Veronica Cartwright, Brian Davies, Jessica Harper (and Jessica Harper's nipples*). Would make a good double feature w/Day of The Locust.
*Seriously, she's naked for like half of her screentime.

playing Madoff on this TV thing
already did Cheney; clearly his goal is to be the bizarro Chadwick Boseman and play the most hated white American men of the early 21st century.

As long as all the most hated white American men all have the same general proportions and age, it should work out nicely for him.

In re: thread title. Eh. Last year I saw Dreyfuss in a 1980 movie, The Competition and he had a sort of boyish charm in that, which some might find sexy. But his co-star Amy Irving, now she was one attractive young woman in 1980!

just watched The Goodbye Girl, and he was so dorky. I liked it, but it felt like such a 1977 film. Marsha Mason and the 10-year old Quinn Cummings were the stars of that show

The Goodbye Girl, 1977, was nominated against Annie Hall for best actor, best actress and best picture at the 1978 academy award. He won best actor, but Annie Hall won the other two awards
I guess maybe it was also an acknowledgement of his role that year in Close Encounters of the Third Kind
