Alejandro Jodorowsky

Recently read an archive interview with this man on Roger Ebert's pages on the Chicago Sun Times website - he sounds like a very interesting guy. But do his films live up to the incredibly bizarre-sounding descriptions? (Also: what are his comics like?)

Alejandro Jodorowsky

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 6 September 2003 15:42 (twenty years ago) link

Is this the guy that made The Holy Mountain? Christ, we just saw this over the weekend. What a demented and weird and twisted and strange and over the top film. And I mean that in all the best ways.

Our friend had really been talking it up, and I was worried that there was no way it could be as good as he claimed, but it was truly astonishing. Wackadoo, weird, wild, conspiracy theory, anti-religion, quasi-mystical nuttiness with a multimillion dollar budget. Total classic.

kate (kate), Saturday, 6 September 2003 15:53 (twenty years ago) link

I want to have his manbabies. That is all.

I used to have his e-mail address and I thought of maybe interviewing him for a time there but somewhere I heard he´s a real dick or something along those lines and then I lost the address and I cried and I cried. I waited far too long. Regret!

And yes, The Holy Mountain is the best cinematic acid trip eva!

The only movies of his you need to watch:
Fando Y Lis
El Topo
The Holy Mountain
Santa Sangre

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 6 September 2003 17:46 (twenty years ago) link

BTW, the Fando Y Lis DVD contains a documentary that gives some insight into his art as a cartoonist for the French version of the Heavy Metal series, how he now makes a living off of tarot readings, and how he was originally hired to direct Dune, but then it all went to hell, etc.

Friend o' Chaki and good LA sort Lenora Claire is a major worshipper of Jodorowsky and got to meet him about a month and a half ago at a screening/Q&A for Santa Sangre -- go here and scroll down to her July 26 entry. Talk moderated by Jerry Stahl, among the attendees David J!

“I liked Lady Gaga’s meat dress. It was funny. But I did that first in my Panic performance. Maybe she has seen what I’ve done – I don’t know. I like to think her song Alejandro was written for me. Her music is interesting. It’s interesting because it’s very free. But it has no meaning because what she’s singing has no hope. It is without hope. It’s only about revolution, which isn’t enough. We need a re-evolution right now, not a revolution. We need something new. Lady Gaga has a lot of energy and that is fantastic, but she is using old Surrealist images.

Jodorowsky writes, again in his book El Topo:

"When I wanted to do the rape scene, I explained to [Mara Lorenzio] that I was going to hit her and rape her. There was no emotional relationship between us, because I had put a clause in all the women's contracts stating that they would not make love with the director. We had never talked to each other. I knew nothing about her. We went to the desert with two other people: the photographer and a technician. No one else. I said, 'I'm not going to rehearse. There will be only one take because it will be impossible to repeat. Roll the cameras only when I signal you to.' Then I told her, 'Pain does not hurt. Hit me.' And she hit me. I said, 'Harder.' And she started to hit me very hard, hard enough to break a rib...I ached for a week. After she had hit me long enough and hard enough to tire her, I said, 'Now it's my turn. Roll the cameras.' And I really...I really...I really raped her. And she screamed."

So those script scans upthread from march 2015 (Alejandro Jodorowsky) ...

In March 2015 a script, an apparent early draft of Dune written by Jodorowsky, appeared on eBay. When asked on Twitter about it Jodorowsky replied: "Es un falso guión con un dibujo idiota." ("It is a fake script with an idiot drawing.")

A big chunk of that book is available online in decent scans. The storyboards are great. I think there's no way a quarter of that version of Dune as seen in the sboards would've made it onscreen.

‘The Holy Mountain’ is way more preposterous and lurid than even films like Fellini’s ‘Satyricon’ or Pasolini’s ‘Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom’

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 00:41 (two years ago) link

It is the ultimate 1973 film

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 00:42 (two years ago) link

of the experimental films from that era, though, I liked Kenneth Anger's 'Lucifer Rising' (1972) and its Bobby Beausoleil score

still haven't seen Pink Narcissus (1971)

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 00:51 (two years ago) link

There were regular double bills of El Topo and The Holy Mountain in Toronto for many years while they were being kept out of distribution in the States by Allen Klein. Apparently it was a contractual requirement for them to be shown together; I watched them both on the same night and that was WAY too much Jodorowsky at once.
I just saw Santa Sangre recently, with no particular expectations, and was really pleasantly surprised. For a filmmaker who I tend to think of as having a narrow range of effects (doing one particular thing very well), there was a lot of humour and emotional depth to the story that was entirely compatible with the usual grotesquerie. The Dance of Reality, which I saw a few years ago, was soulful in the same way, but I had supposed that that was a recent development in his style, related to the film being autobiographical. I'd probably rank him above Fellini now.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 16 April 2022 01:05 (two years ago) link

he doesn't even come close to Fellini

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 01:14 (two years ago) link

Love Jodo for the most part but no way he even touches Fellini as a filmmaker.

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 16 April 2022 06:47 (two years ago) link

Fantastic Planet would be my 1973 experimental pick.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 16 April 2022 08:05 (two years ago) link

The comparison of the two came to mind because of the circus milieu of Santa Sangre. My personal view on Fellini is that he peaked early with I Vitelloni, and got bigger not better.

i finally saw Holy Mountain, last night, in a small room. the colors were bright, the sounds were loud. i thought all the scenes with the fool carrying his replica around were so good. climbing that giant tower, then the alchemist descending the staircase in the slowest of realtime motion. at the end, the alchemist sending the fool home with the woman and chimpanzee who have been following him, before he can reach the top of the mountain. lots to think about.

i wish i were a little more versed in all the symbolism that permeates the film. for example, i recognized these symbols when they appeared and thought it was from the i ching,

https://i.imgur.com/4JcA7v9.png

but they're from something else in taoism, the eight trigrams, and represent Heaven and Earth

https://i.imgur.com/C6kfw7n.png

i might do some internet hunting and see if i can find a shot-by-shot breakdown of the symbolism throughout the movie. would like to watch El Topo soon as well! also, are his 21st century films good?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 9 April 2023 19:20 (one year ago) link

Santa Sangre is great, an ultra-lurid telenovela-style horror movie. But it's a regular movie-movie, with a plot and whatnot, not a pure yank-your-brain-out-your-ass shotgun blast of symbolism like The Holy Mountain. I don't think any movie on earth is like The Holy Mountain, really.
