I need somewhere to stay in New York City.

I'll be coming October 8th through the 15th, for the first time in my life. The 8th through the 11th I'll be able to stay in a hotel, but I need somewhere to stay those last 4 days or else I'll have to cut my trip (tragically?) short. So if anyone's willing to put up with me for that time, email me or something. I'm friendly company, I talk about Radiohead a lot (as you can guess, it's the reason for the trip), I won't make a mess of your place...

Mel my excuse is that my room has just been taken over by someone else's boxes and two cats!! Fuck a guilt trip, and fuck you too Jim. I've done more than my fair share of hosting friends this summer, especially ILXers. And of course, it was a pleasure to do so... but really jim, keep your off-base judgements to yourself - at least until after you've seen the size of some NYC apartments.

So, I'm sorry Melissa. I'm broke, in a bad-mood, starting two crappy new jobs, and really can't take any more houseguests soon especially since my parents are coming to stay with me next month. Anyways, we live in a not-so-nice neighborhood, right behind the williamsburg projects.

If all else fails, try the Chelsea Hostel. It's$27 for single-sex dorms, fairly clean [cleaner than my room, anyways], and in a great location. Good luck

White House Hotel. It's like $30 for a private room. It's like right across from CBGBs in the East Village. I've had friends who stayed there and they seemed to like it. Lots of other young international backpackers too. Maybe some hot Swedes if youre lucky

when I went to NYC a couple of years ago I stayed at the Chelsea hostel, and it was fine. It's not free, but it's not a lot of dosh either. It was a bit hot (I was there the last week in Sept), and the windows were nailed open, but there are lockers, and it's a great location.

I've stayed there twice; the first time (1992) it was actaully pretty nice, but the second time (2000) it, well, wasn't, but they were fixing it up. The fact that it's still around leads me to hope that they've finished their renovations but it's listed in hotels.com as a 2-star.

How late into the year is it reasonably cool (70s-80s daytime avg) in New York? Is the weather nice the first couple of weeks in May?

Fall beats Spring in the Northeast, and the weather will be unpredictable, but it's unlikely to be too hot or too cold. If you can't come September through early November, this is a pretty good time.

it's in between the end of the high-culture indoor season and the great free outdoor stuff, but those probably aren't high priorities for a first-time visitor. baseball, of course, but get tickets now, I would think.

xpost - Gracias. It's a long-shot, but fall is unlikely because of school and work and I'm hoping to get a trip in before the temperature approaches anything hot.

Baseball-wise, I'm hoping to catch a game with the Single-A team in Brooklyn.

yes, NYC can get pretty muggy in the summer, and yes there are summers where we regularly get up into the 90s, but summer arguably is the second-best season to visit given all the outdoor stuff going on. May is still probably a very good time to visit, but I wouldn't write June, July or even August off. then again, I wear shorts and sandals with impunity in those months. (I wear 3-season wool suits then too, but I won't say I don't sweat)

The Jane Hotel

Same owners as Bowery Hotel, The Park, The Maritime. Budget hotel, "hip" rooms, free wifi, Ipod station, COMMUNAL BATHROOMS though. Rooms supposed to be extra-cheap for NYC. I'd totally stay there. Just opened some rooms for preview this summer. Not sure if they're renting rooms yet, but keep an eye out. Rooms for under $100, def.

i'm going to the west coast like aug 15-30.... i'm 90% sure im moving back to my old apartment which is a 1br in east williamsburg / west bushwick / whatever. 15'ish mins by train to union square.

love the hotel carter. the nyt did its own stay there (2 years before the body under the bed incident.) there's a deli attached to its lobby, the lucky star, where i used to go for a grilled-cheese sandwich.

When I worked at the NYT I'd go there for orange juice and a bagel in the morning. It's directly across the street from the old New York Times office.

When the Nightingales first came to play in america, that's where they stayed. They said their was a prostitute on their floor. I always thought they meant on the same floor of the hotel, but maybe they meant literally, on THEIR floor.

this place on my block is a "budget hotel," whatever that means. i see a lot of youth-hostel types going in and out. they've been renovating it, i think it used to be more of an SRO type place. i can't speak to what it's like on the inside, but the neighborhood's nice and friendly...
