yeah, I was always goin' to mcdonald's and gettin', like, big macs and that and then I found out for real that the whopper was flame broiled, man, and that was good as hell but I never went to burger king cuz burker king used to sell pepsi, man, fuck that, anyway, man, when I tasted that whopper and it was charbroiled and it was good as hell and then, co-incidentally, burger king started selling coke, so the whole thing got wrapped up; now you can go to burger king and get a whopper and get the Goddamn coke and you're set but that whole pepsi thing just turned me off from burger king and it's great how things work out, sometimes, like that.

"THE COLA CONQUEST
A documentary series by Irene Angelico,
Produced by DLI Productions / Abby Neidik
In association with CBC,Channel 4,(UK)
Telepool Germany and Canal Plus France
Canada, 3 x 52'
Challenging, fast-paced, irreverent, serious and funny by turns, The Cola Conquest explores the delicious paradox at the heart of Coke:

How did an innocuous soft drink, more than 99% sweetened water, come to wield such enormous economic and marketing power and assume such significance in so many people's lives? What does it say to us about who we are and what we are becoming?

The Cola Conquest tells the story of Coca-Cola - the "sublimated essence" of all that America stands for - and the century-long competition with its rival, Pepsi. Shot in the United States, Canada, Russia, England, France, Mexico, and China, The Cola Conquest takes us from Coca-Cola's invention by a morphine-addicted Civil War veteran to the 21st century and China, where Coke is trying to wipe out the 3000 year-old tea drinking habit. "

I've seen it and agree with this review that says it's not a left-wing filmmakers' attack on a corporation but their point of view on history + were amazed of the power of their influence.

B-b-b-but what's so wrong with the Daily Mail Mark?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 18 August 2003 12:03 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe I'm reading a bit too much into Mark C's argument, but isn't it the case that Daily Mail and Daily Express readers *think* that they're better read than (and generally a cut above) Sun and Star readers, when really they're still reading a reactionary tabloid, just as diet drink drinkers are still drinking a horribly sugary synthetic liquid that's not actually going to help them become any thinner?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 18 August 2003 12:14 (twenty years ago) link

Along those lines, MarkH. Being sold something which implies it has superiority over the alternative but is actually worse for you than the more honest original (red top tabloids in the case of the M**l). And both leave a nasty taste in your mouth.

Pinkpanther, you're joking about the Daily Mail, aren't you?

I would say that the average American Pepsi consumer has rolled with the punches so far and will probably not do anything but keep drinking Pepsi as normal.

Pepsi design is just about the art, then? That's kind of interesting.

This reminds me of 300 doing way better business than The Spirit because the guys who loved 300 think The Spirit is too gay, despite the fact that 300 is way gayer. I'm not sure what that has to do with anything though.

That's not exactly what I'm saying, but I do think it would take a pretty O_O design change to change much at this point in Pepsi's trajectory as a company. I think the design is not only inoffensive enough to not put people off, but is actually appealing to prevailing aesthetic tastes. Things can't look XTREME!!!!MONSTERMEGABEASTSODAhereisagradienteffectLOL forever.

I notice Coca-Cola is still paying for a 24-year old marketing blunder, having to slap the word "classic" on all their labels.

i like the 'minimalised' styling of the new cans. i don't like the altering of the wavy line tho - apparently it's so it represents a smile better (with a thin smile for diet and a bigger open-mouthed smile for the MAX), doesn't work for me.
