selling off cds

i've just discovered a big box of mid-90s indie cd singles which i have no need for whatsoever (mansun? what was i thinking?). anyway, i guess i have two queries; (i) how do i find out if any of them are worth more than about 20p each, and (ii) whereabouts (in london) should i try to sell the rest off? are the record and tape exchanges my best bet?

toby, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Have look at the recently published Record collector price guide 2002 it may give you an idea, failing that no doubt someone on ILM would know.
As for selling them if they're worth anything either on some auction site (ebay/qxl) or through Record Collector magazine. I suspect you'll get a fraction of their true value at r&t exchange - though London posters would know more about that than me. Early Mansun singles are worth a few bob, they do attract a *devoted* fanbase.

Course, you could just always e-mail me a list and I can ponder it for you. Oh yes.

tremendoid, Monday, 14 July 2008 06:57 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, but not until 2007. the market for mansun singles was pretty poor by then. did get over $100 for a hole cd though (that i'd picked up in oxfam for $3).

what's the best way to sell CDs these days? (are they worth anything anymore?) I'm looking at liquidating my collection by about 50%. some very good stuff in there.

Amazon marketplace is good...though I get gazumped by Music Overstocks sometimes...

CD's have value still...helps if they're not on itunes.

Depends what it is. My (non-computer using) in-laws recently gave me their CD collection to sell for them. Amazon did the trick for a lot of things though the profit margins on some CDs did make me wonder whether it was worth the effort. It helps if you have access to mailers to recycle rather than having to buy them. I didn't bother with the CDs that others were selling for £0.01 on Amazon and just boxed them up for Music Magpie - it worked out at about 30 pence per CD for these but it seemed straight-forward (it helps if you see it as "decluttering" rather than "money making"). I have a feeling you're US-based though.

djh, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 07:56 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, music magpie, they sell off all the cd's on amazon, and undercut all sellers by 1p.

If you've got some interesting stuff you could try discogs. Fees aren't as swingeing as ebay/amazon. You could always try the ILX marketplace, though last time I looked it hadn't been updated for some time.

I always buy from individuals on Amazon, usually you can get the same CD for about 10p more which is better than giving it to Zoverstocks, or one of the many 'nom de plume' they seem to use.

Any recommendations for buying 12" record mailers? And would you recommend buying inserts too? (UK)

djh, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

yes to inserts

i got mine from here and they seemed to be the cheapest. the more you can buy the cheaper it gets, i got 50. they delivered quickly and free.

don't ever use those for posting outside of the UK unless you want the recipient to get bent sleeves

The trick is to have an insert sleeve to protect and mail it with it outside of the cover.

Doesn't hurt to buy a roll of perforated bubble wrap (12" x 12" sheets), put one between the jacket, record and a cardboard flat. Also pick your mailer up and give it a good shake horizontally and vertically - if you feel anything move, try again. Sticking an extra LP sleeve in can help tighten it up.

Hmm, so if I 'advertise for sale' a CD i rlly want, for a cheaper price than I'm prepared to pay MMAgpie, how long will it take them to reduce the price?

ha, the other day I was looking at some guy's sale list on Discogs, which was several hundred strong and mostly consisted of ridiculously rare 80s hardcore/anarcho type stuff, and got to wondering if ppl did this

djh you should start off filtering through your collection and pulling out things that still sell for a decent amount online before heading to sell the others off. it really is a big job listing things but i've got as much as £60 for an individual record which i wouldn't even have got if that same record was in a job lot of 20. i have a few others that are worth that and some worth even more that i'm not sure at this stage that i want to part with. ideally i'd love to have 100 records that mean something to me. i've had it with "stuff".

I started the ILX Marketplace board last year -- http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/NewAnswersControllerServlet?boardid=1425799748

The main idea was a place to give fellow ILXors the first shot at the stuff we want to get rid of.

clemenza, Saturday, 10 March 2012 23:45 (twelve years ago) link

I'm downsizing my CD collection - getting rid of all my jewel cases, putting the CDs in binders, and selling off stuff I don't listen to much. I guess if I have any collectible or rare CDs that I ever want to sell they won't be worth as much without the jewel case inserts, but I don't know if it's worth the trouble to try and separate those out. Also, to identify the CDs in the binders, for those that don't have the artist/album name printed on the CD itself, I'm writing that with a marker. So much for resale value I guess. I guess I don't usually think of CDs as something with collectible value. If I had time to digitize them all, I would do that.

o. nate, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

It is incredibly easy to get at least a rough idea of whether a CD is valuable - simply search amazon using the barcode number. Takes seconds and will identify what might be worth putting a bit more care & effort into getting rid of. Just use the standard amazon search box, but use the full 13 digit barcode number instead of artist title, as this will take you directly to the single listing matching that number.

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry, may not be 13 digits now that I look at a couple, but you get what I mean.

I looked up a few things by name that I had a hunch might be worth something. I found a few in the $20-30 range, but these are by and large not things I'm planning to sell, so I'm not sure it's worth the trouble for me to preserve all the inserts and such.

o. nate, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago) link

Probably the most expensive one I found is "Pachuco Cadaver", the Capt. Beefheart tribute by Eugene Chadbourne & Jimmy Carl Black, which is going for $40 used on Amazon. That one does come with a fun comic book insert which I'm planning to save anyway.

Is it even worth it or should I just toss my CDs / drop them off at Goodwill

, Thursday, 28 August 2014 18:31 (nine years ago) link

Goodwill at least! Somebody will buy. But from what I've read and experienced, sure seems like most CDs outlast most downloads, maybe incl. flacs. I'll keep some of both.

dow, Thursday, 28 August 2014 20:13 (nine years ago) link

imo check out sales on discogs for anything you think might be rare and put em up if it's worth it. was surprised by how much I got for a couple discs during my last purge.

original bgm, Thursday, 28 August 2014 20:41 (nine years ago) link

I gave my friend's little brother my 15-20 binders worth of CDs - I don't think I'd even opened one in several years, my car doesn't have a CD player and anything that's not on Spotify or that I don't own on vinyl or iTunes... well, am I really going to miss the local label Christmas compilation from 1999?

He and his boyfriend are having music theme parties with my collection - so I guess there are a bunch of college freshmen trundling down the path of mid-90s ska for at least one night. Sorry, y'all.

I sold off about 300 CDs over the past year via discogs (some on ebay) and made in total around $3k. so unless you are in urgent need of immediate cash, and depending on what you have, I recommend it, particularly if yiou can sort out how to set up the shipping policies in discogs; I think a lot of people gave up and sellers left. Don't bother listing anything under $4, it's not generally worth it (people will buy but you wind up not making much after fees). I wish I'd done this with the other 600 CDs that i sold back at Amoeba a year and a half ago but I didn't really have time to list all of them until covid hit.

akm, Friday, 19 February 2021 23:24 (three years ago) link

In the US media mail is necessary to make shipping cost-effective and that's a nightmare these days.
