Holy Shirt! I am looking at the WTC and smoke clouds are really big and I'm all the way uptown. I heard a second plane just crashed into it before I looked out the window. Some news organization said it might be a terrorist attack (this is very 2nd hand).

I just got the news on my pager, with the same suspicions of terrorist attack voiced. Put it this way, what are the chances of two planes accidentally crashing into the World Trade Centre on the same day??

UPDATE 1-Planes hit World Trade Center, at least said 6 dead

NEW YORK, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Two planes crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York on Tuesday morning, causing huge explosions and killing at least six people, television said.
CNBC television said there were at least a thousand injured.
Both towers of the lower Manhattan landmark, where thousands of people work in offices and which was the scene of a bombing in 1993, were burning after the crashes.
The FBI told the Associated Press that it was "foul play" and not an accident, ABC television reported.
A person who answered the phone on the trading floor at interdealer-broker Cantor Fitzgerald, located near the top of the World Trade Center, said "We're fucking dying," when -zzJ9and hung up. There was screaming and yelling in the background. A follow up call was not answered.
Nic Fulton, an eyewitness, said that just before the first explosion, he saw a plane fly low over hi???parment. We've never seen a plane th???, but he was not able to identifiy it further. "There's so much smoke coming out of the thing," he said.

At least six people were reportedly killed today when two planes crashed into the World Trade Centre tower in the heart of New York's financial district in what is suspected to be a terrorist attack. It is thought that the aircraft were passenger planes.

It has been reported that the FBI was investigating reports of the hijack of a passenger plane before the crashes.

The first aircraft crashed into one of the towers shortly before 9am (2pm BST).

Smoke billowed out of a gaping hole in the 110-storey tower, which was damaged on at least two sides.

Just 18 minutes after the initial explosion there was a second blast as another plane hit the other tower. Flames shot out of the side of the building and debris rained down.

A witness to the first explosion, Jeanne Yurman, said she heard a sonic boom then looked out of her window to see an explosion.

"I looked out and the side of the World Trade Centre exploded as I looked up. Debris started sailing down, I couldn't believe what was happening," she said.

A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the agency is pursuing reports that one or both of the planes were hijacked and that the crashes may have been the result of a suicide mission.

I have not been able to load a single news site, aside from some news message boards, and they seem to be filled with racist, xenophobic freaks. that's a pretty stupid thing to be thankful for knowing that one of the towers has collapsed. I hit a mental block thinking of how the death toll is stacking up. I don't know what to say, other than the thanks already written.

a man on the radio says he lives a mile away from the wtc and could feel the heat when the plane crashed. he said it's the most frightening insane thing he's ever witnessed. he says people are just appearing out of the cloud of smoke and debris, running. insane.

I'm in an AOL chat with a friend who watched the tower collapse. can't believe this is happening. Plus there was a car bomb that hit the State Department (allegedly).

I can see the Capitol Building from my office, but don't see any smoke coming from it (I can see monster clouds of smoke coming from the Pentagon). All federal govt. buildings in DC have been evacuated and the workers sent home.

Gulf War finished in May of 1991 though. Oddly - and possibly not at all connected - September 1991 offers as significant effects the end of the Russian communist coup, and the start of the Yugoslavian civil war.

My sources in the Palestinian organisation which have claimed responsibilty have been ringing the BBC non-stop to say that these people are nutters and not to believe them. Palestinians aren't that dumb. However suicide bombing suggests the Middle East - that's the form.

Another hijack plane heading for Washingston, American Military plane is in pursuit. TV pictures unbelievable. You would not get this in any movie script - this is very serious.

The evacuation effort was not finished, many were trapped - the elevators were destroyed, people were having to walk. Does anyone know when the tourist decks open up? I thought they were pretty early, like at 8 - WHERE THERE PEOPLE UP TOP????! That freaks me out completely. Plus all the transport goes thru there - a grand total of *2 million people* go thru WTC every single weekday.

Evac plans for a building like the WTC would work on a zoning system, suitable for fire and often meaning that people in the higher areas would not get out for 20 minutes. This is assuming that everything is free from debris and structurally sound. It is impossible to make a building on that scale easy to evacuate - you just make them more fireproof. WHich does not help in a situation like this.

i'm absolutely not a fan of the bush administration but i'm confindent that they will not act rashly in terms of counterattacks. Nothing was ever done about the bombing of our aircraft carrier b/c we still don't know who's responsible. I think their main concern right now would be securing our cities. But not since the brits burned down the white house has there ever been this kind of attack on american soil.

I do not advocate starting a war. I advocate a systematic investigation to find out who is responsible. If the group responsible is uncovered, we should BOMB ALL HOLY FUCK OUT OF THEM.

Canada has just closed its airports. Meaning there are loads of aeroplanes in the air with nowhere to land.... Paranoia making things worse?

MSNBC just reported that NYC Police are evacuating a high school (Stuyvesant?) due to a bomb threat.

I'm just as fearful about the retaliation, if not more so.

At some point they'll have to at least let people land, but that's about it.

how many floors on the world trade centre?, reports state that anything above the 67 level would have been killed by the impact of the plane, i.e anything above this would be trapped, and the bleak pictures of the second tower of the plane crashing into the tower.

from the floors downwards from the impact, how many managed to escape before the second tower collapsed? the delay was about 15-20 minutes?

He can see the devastation from the top of his building and says he's never seen anything like it. Islamic Jihad just claimed responsibility. Several Jewish friends of mine are currently arguing over whether they actually did it or not. This is in addition to anthoer Palestinian group which has claimed responsibility.

There are I believe 110 floors in the WTC. 20 or so yYears ago, it was not rented out completely, when the city was broke. Now it is and there are loads of shops (really an entire mall) on the ground floor. Stuyvesant H.S. is within walking distance, perhaps 1/2 a mile avay. I walked down the road about an hour ago and could see both towers top 1/4 covered in grey smoke, this was shortly before the collapse I did no see that. I detest George Bush and his father, I consider it a tragedy for the majority of the American people that he got into office. But I am 100% supportive of retaliation by the US and Allies against the organization responsible for this.

As you know, CNN, ABC, and all the other "biggie" websites are down right now, so if you want news online, your best bets are local news websites,international news websites (esp. in foreign languages if you can read them),local radio station websites, and news mirror sites.

If you can get into ANY radio station's live broadcast (it doesn't have to be a news broadcast) connection, you can try changing the url within the broadcast to a bigger news radio channel. (For instance, logging into a local college radio channel and then changing the URL within RealPlayer to a larger news channel.) Good luck. Take care.
