River City Ransom: C/D

I used to play this for hours on end in our upstairs room, muting the sound and playing Technotronic's Pump Up The Jam album over and over whilst Acro Circusing dozens upon dozens of squat monotonous gang members into submission.

In college I remember thinking 'Life would be really great if I could just beat up these pink-shirted frat boys and take their spare change at will.' It's safe to say the game had a lasting effect.

Does anybody else even know what I'm talking about? If not, I advise you to grab an NES emulator and download the appropriate ROM immediately.

Biff: BARF!!!

I advise you to cheat by beating up bonnie and clyde under the bridge and buying the sushi leg power up thing next door till your kick is in the 90s.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 29 March 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought this thread was going to be about a plotline in river city.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 29 March 2003 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

those cowboys were tough mofos.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 29 March 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As RJG says, most disappointing.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 29 March 2003 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Best ever: 2-player cooperative beating each other up on an empty screen (batting trashcans with a lead pipe = ULTRA KL4SSS1X)

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 29 March 2003 03:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Better than that: 2-player fighting, during which you pick up the other player and USE HIM AS A PROJECTILE.

As with most things vital to the '80s video game scene, Seanbaby has his say.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 29 March 2003 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Word to Seanbaby and my boys Mr. Noodles and Nate P. One day we will beat up the whole world and take their spare change like a big unstoppable pair of upright young men in T-shirts.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 29 March 2003 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I've actually been thinking about Narc, where you're a DEA(?) agent killing/arresting dope fiends. Now I want to play it and RCR.

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 29 March 2003 05:22 (twenty-three years ago)

this game is too often regarded as the forgotten or unmentioned nes classic yet everybody and their mother talks about it

jack, Saturday, 29 March 2003 05:39 (twenty-three years ago)

What I think most people forget is that it was produced by the same company that did Double motherfucking Dragon.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 29 March 2003 06:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh! Classic! I loved beating up the twins to save money to buy the special books that let you kick really fast, or kill people by throwing a trsahcan lid at them.

And when you go to the Sauna, you can check out the hero's ASS!

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 29 March 2003 08:43 (twenty-three years ago)

very sweet ass, might i add.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 29 March 2003 08:52 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
Giant-sized classic. Jack is wrong - even though the Internet and the geek community are in the know and have been hyping this game aggressively since Seanbaby, it was at best a minor seller on the NES, and your average kid who grew up at this time and played a ton of Mario and Zelda has never heard of it. A shame, too - it's smoother and more varied than Double Dragon, the RPG elements more or less work, and the techniques are fun to do. And yes, the two-player co-op works fabulously here. But it's the text that makes it so memorable...

Alex used the Gold Medal. And was allowed to keep it after passing a drug test.

You can post threatening .gifs at me all you want, I'm still not the one who actually wrote "ULTRA KL4SSS1X" anywhere, ever.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Friday, 17 November 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that is a really, really good point.

DOCTOR METH KING (TOMBOT), Friday, 17 November 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 17 November 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

I have a theory that only people from Tennessee and Kentucky like this game.

wordy rappinghood (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 November 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

I am from Alabama. ZING!!! BEYOTHC!!!

DOCTOR METH KING (TOMBOT), Friday, 17 November 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

Very fond memories of having to share a computer keyboard to play 2-player.

wordy rappinghood (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 November 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

I like to imagine that Nicketc. just posted that because he all of a sudden remembered it

DOCTOR METH KING (TOMBOT), Friday, 17 November 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

wordy rappinghood (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 November 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

My brother had fond hopes that the Warriors PS2 game from last year would play more like RCR. He enjoyed the game, but was disappointed in lack of shoe/sushi/book-purchasing
