Michael Caine

His name is Michael Caine.

After watching a thing about him last night I thought about how many films that I think are great have him in it: Ipcress file, The Italian Job, Get Carter, hell, even Escape to Victory.

He seemed to become some sort of lad icon in the mid-90s for some of these films, yet he's still cool and still getting oscar-nominated parts.

Is he as great as I think he is?

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

He's at his best in Stella Street.

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

italian job is not a good film

funeral in berlin is best

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Italian job, it's funny. It's been over-imitated and quoted too often by students, but at the end I think it's great.

And yes Funeral in Berlin is good.

I like the way he makes crap movies occasionally to pay for his wife's jewellery.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Well he is one of the three or four sources of "I've never seen myself in that movie, but I beleive it's terrible. I've seen the house it paid for, and it's great."

I really liked him in Sleuth, but he has been in his share, and more than his share, of paycheck films.

It's possible that, like Jack Nicholson, I'm down on him became I was first exposed to his current "mining his legend" films rather than his great early ones.

I think there was a definite backlash around when he got the oscar, along the lines of "Oh god, why do the Yanks think he's a proper actor, he's an old hack these days." Though this was the year after he was reportedly great in the British Little Voice.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

All the Harry Palmer films are excellent Andrew.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

oh god, not all of them. Billion Dollar Brain looks silly and is quite dull

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

And what about Bullet To Beijing and Midnight in St. Petersburgh, the 90s ones scripted by the guy who wrote "The Mangler"?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

good point, I meant the original.

I like billion dollar brain, it is silly, that's probably why I like it, I don't hate fun.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe he did The Swarm to buy a house for his mum. But why did he do Beyond The Poseidon Adventure?

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

The old stuff is good, and he's good in the occasional thing since, such as Hannah And Her Sisters, but there is an awful lot of worthless coasting over the last few decades.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

When you've made approximately 66,000 movies, 10 or 20 of them will probably be bad.

italian job is not a good film

I dunno, I finally saw it for the first time and I liked it (and since I'm totally free from whatever overquoted context it exists in over there, I have that on my side). It's actually kinda weirdly entertaining as a total mishmash of a bunch of other films -- it inherits Ealing comedies and James Bond (and more accurately James Bond knockoffs) and predicts pure stunt-driven hoohah of the seventies in turn. If Tarantino had done it he would have given every one of the characters little quirks to hint at A Rich Inner Life but this movie does none of that for the very good reason that there is no NEED to do any of that. Caine's hardly playing a character, he's a step up from a cipher with some good lines, and that's all that's required. And frankly I loved the ending, I didn't expect that at all! God knows what the remake must have been like...

Muppet Christmas Carol roXors

Damn straight. And yes he was great in Batman Begins too, so there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 June 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

My two favorite Caine performances are in Dressed to Kill and Mona Lisa.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 15 June 2006 02:35 (nineteen years ago)

He was great in Little Voice. As victim-of-showbiz Ray Say. Key moment: When he victory-shoves his fist in the air as he walks down the stairs after leaving her room after he has sealed the deal, and then is seen in a montage of motor and money, all to the tune of Shirley Bassey singing "Goldfinger."

Well he is one of the three or four sources of "I've never seen myself in that movie, but I beleive it's terrible. I've seen the house it paid for, and it's great."
Yup. My favorite version of this was when he told a story of the making The Swarm-of which he said- "There is always somebody you can find who says- 'Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time'"- in which there was a great expense layed out on white lab coats because- "you see, a bee's doo-doo, of its very nature is very small"- they all turned brown every time they released the bees.

Michael Caine to release chill-out album

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

Recently, he was great in Children of Men. I love the fact that he worked and worked and said yes to every rubbish part that came along as long as there was a big paycheck involved, but now that he's tremendously rich, he only does things he likes and will apparently now work for very little money, just to be helpful. That seems proper to me.

I saw Parkinson interview him some years back, and was very touched by his revelation about his brother who was developmentally challenged and lived in a special home. I was also amused by the fact that his mam continued to work as a cleaning lady for years after he was making steady money, because she didn't quite believe it would last. She used to work with Adam Faith's mam, who was also a cleaning lady.

Watched The Ipcress File last night. Fantastic even with all the eye shadow. I should watch more of his films when he was younger.

I am stunned at tracklisting. How the hell is he going to sing SWOLLEN!??!

Finally found it:

"You're paying 10d more for a fancy French label, If you want button mushrooms, they're better value on the next shelf."
"It's not just the label. These have a better flavour!"
"You're quite the gourmet, aren't you Palmer?"

Right. ENOUGH! Back to album discussion!
