So, what're your favorite and least favorite Disneyworld/land rides?

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 23 February 2003 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

YAY: Mister Toad's Wild Ride and El Rio del Tiempo [I love the part with the techno-dancing Aztecs and the mexicans chasing you trying to sell you chiclets]

Ehh: Mission to Mars [YAWN!]. Hall of Presidents [YAWN!YAWN!]

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 23 February 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

If I had ever gone on it, my fave would have to be the Haunted Mansion special Nightmare Before Christmas edition...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 February 2003 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

oh my god, whats that?

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 23 February 2003 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

oh my god, whats that?

They broke it out for Halloween. Sounded pretty great!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 February 2003 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Monsanto's "Adventure Through Inner Space"!

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Sunday, 23 February 2003 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

favorites: Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Haunted Mansion, Disneyland Paris' Pirates Of The Caribbean

least favorites: the flying Aladdin themed flat ride at Disney Studios Paris (stupid ride with crap theming, placement, and capacity at a crap park), Rock N' Roller Coaster at Disney Studios Paris, and, in fact, every other square inch at Disney Studios Paris, minus Cinemagique. and oh yea, that shitty redo of Journey Through Imagination.

Mission To Mars was also removed a few years back (yay).

and oh yea, that shitty redo of Journey Through Imagination.

what did they do to Journey Through Imagination?!?!

I sort of miss Captain EO, but the Honey I Shrunk the Audience thing they replaced it with it kinda cool too.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 23 February 2003 08:53 (twenty-three years ago)

do they still have the michael jackson hollogram?

minna (minna), Sunday, 23 February 2003 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: the old rape-happy Pirates of the Caribbean, the Hall of Presidents, and the It's a Small World ride which has claimed more lives than any other Disney ride.

Destroy: their rollercoasters are alright but they're just rollercoasters, nothing special

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 23 February 2003 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

My boat got stuck on the It's a Small World ride. I was in the final room for 15 minutes, it was fantastic.

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a Small World ride which has claimed more lives than any other Disney ride.

"A Duff for YOU and a Duff for ME!"

"I can SEE THE MUSIC!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

>>what did they do to Journey Through Imagination?!?!<<

They reddid it into this raging crap fest and removed all traces of the only mascot in Epcot that sold anything, Figment. It was part of the changes that took place in the mid to late 90s at Disney World to "modernize" the parks. Some smart things were done (removing Mission to Mars and replacing it with Alien Encounter) and some truly stupid things were done (getting rid of Mr. Toad's and 20,000 Leagues for new rides based on Pooh and Buzz Lightyear). JTI's makeover was among the stupid ones. Supposedly they're gonna do it back because of a fall in ridership.

My uncle worked for Disney World, so we went a bunch of times.
Classic: Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Teacups (if you like vomiting), the monorail (ok, not really a ride, but kind of cool. But they've also got a monorail at the Orlando airport. Orlando has the highest monorail/population ratio in the US).
Dud: Small World, of course, though it is pretty trippy. Most of Epcot (essentially commercials for the sponsoring companies).

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Pirates and the Haunted Mansion are my favorites - I won't go on It's A Small World ever again without being heavily sedated or on acid.

I kinda miss 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - I dug it as a kid.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

My favourite is the Cryogenic Deep Freeze.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Pirates of the Carribean

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride was great. Too bad they removed it from Orlando. I thought it was cruelly funny and rather anti-Disney, so I’m not surprised that they removed it. I would chuckle while standing in line as I’d see smallish kids crying at the end of the ride after they’d gone to hell.

No One (SiggyBaby), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Thunder Mountain is my fav and the Water Rapids in Animal Kingdom. Least favorite is Its A Small World.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

1) (making out on) tom sawyer's island (after dusk)
2) the matterhorn (pre abominable snowman)
3) videopolis (danse motherfukker)
4) big thunder railroad (coyotes and rattlesnakes and the poor bleating goat)
5) autopia (whiplash surprise)
6) space mountain (chocolate chip meteors)
7) splash mountain (PC for the new millenium)
8) haunted mansion (here lies the body of benjamin blake who stepped on the gas instead of the brake)
9) the jungle cruise (also PC for the new millenium)
10) indiana jones (best line)

The most appealing Disney ride has got to be Snow White, with her porcelain skin, shapely hips and come hither smile, non?

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm so going to Disneyland soon.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

take me spencer. i have an annual pass (i go to disneyland alot actually.)

chaki (chaki), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, let's go!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

ok. im seriously down. the great thing is they have an outdoor bar RIGHT IN FRONT OF DISNEYLAND NOW called Katel. they make FANTASTIC martinis.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know about drinking and then getting on the Matterhorn!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Pirates...and the Haunted Mansion..HANDS DOWN! The best rides ever! I personally think that New Orleans Square and Main Street USA are the two greatest "lands" in the park. Not to say that the others aren't good too...but those two are amazing. Is it just me...or can all of you find immense joy in just THINKING about Disneyland?! I could just stand in the middle of the park all day and not move and still be the happiest person in the world. God bless Walt Disney.

Lola Falana, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

you can download the Haunted House soundtrack from various file share programs! it's like you're on the ride!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The first time I went to Disneyland I was an adult and I was so happy I cried. I suddenly remembered how much I'd wanted to go when I was a kid but we lived thousands of miles away and had no money and I was useless at colouring competions (the only way to get there). I like Disneyland much better than Disneyworld.

The Christmas parade at Disneyland is fantastic (chim-chim-a-nee), whereas the year we went to Disneyworld they did this apalling hip-hop shite: "Mickey is in da house".

At Epcot mr estela and I went on this ride/tour thing and they took our picture without us realising and we had these expressions of disgusted boredom on our faces.

My favourite Disney ride is Splash Mountain.

estela, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:37 (twenty-three years ago)

WAIT A MINUTE, Spencer and Chaki -- if you bastards come down from LA for Disneyland, you have to meet up with all the OC bunch and then it will be good fun. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just there last month with a couple of friends - the Haunted Mansion was closed because they were taking all the Nightmare Before Christmas stuff out, and I was very sad so I made everyone go on Pirates twice...

Why do I suddenly want to go again?

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Pirates of the Carribean
The Haunted Mansion
Space Mountain
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride
It's a Small World
Thunder Mountain
Star Tours

Disclaimer: Growing-up I had an aunt and an uncle who both worked for the mouse in Anaheim, so almost every school vacation involved trips to Disneyland. Yippee! (A helpful hit - Get there REALLY early and go do all of the "adultish" rides in Tomorrowland - then, in the evening, once all of the kiddies have cried and been taken back to the hotel room, the better rides (Pirates/Haunted Mansion/etc.) are virtually lineless. (Last time I rode Pirates five times in a row, with no waits - Cool!

And now, living in the town that the mouse-built, well, we have annual residence passes, so we can go and just ride what we want to and then go to Epcot or one of the resorts for dinner and come home - it's much more relaxing that way, but you don't get that "I just paid $50.00+ to get in here and I am going to make the most of my money!" panic/high that comes with being a tourist *sigh* (I do go to Animal Kingdom to watch the Galapagos Tortoises and the Indian Fruit Bats and the naked mole rats and meercats.)

Does anyone else fancy the Golden West Freeze at the Carnation Restaraunt on Main St. at Disney LA?

Why do I suddenly want to go again?

Because all yer ILX friends rock, of course. :-)

whoa, LA/OC Disneyland FAP?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh fuck yes. I already said this, dammit!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 05:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll borrow my friend's uber-phone/pda/camera thing so we can post from the lunching pad!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i've never been to disneyland. but i think it would be the teacups. they are so colourful and it would be so cute to sit in a gigantic teacup!

This was my mother's theory, too.

She had wanted to ride the tea cups all her life. So when we finally got to Disney World, we (my brother and I and her) waited in line forever to get into the teacups.

The teacups, they are made for littler people than me (6'3") and my brother (just shorter). (We were in our late teens at the time, thereabouts.)

So we wedged our legs awkwardly into the teacup, all three of us, and waited for the ride to begin.

Naturally, as soon as it started, my brother or I reached for the center of the teacup and started turning it around, causing the teacup to spin. "NO!" said my mother. "No, we are not going to make the teacup spin. We are going to sit in the teacup and we are going to enjoy the fact that we are sitting in a teacup at Disney World."

My brother and I were a little stunned by the vehemence of my mother's dream, but it was clearly a moment she'd been dreaming of for decades, and we were going to let it be just as she always wanted it to be.

Afterwards she reported being quite satisfied with her teacup sojourn.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:18 (twenty-three years ago)

that's really beautiful, actually.

i just remember how much fun the Muppets 4d show at MGM is, and the TOWER OF TERROR!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

mr toads doesn't exist at Disney World anymore. I like Big Thunder Mountain.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

That water ride that takes you through the Song of the South really, really did a number on me. I'm not going to talk about it much more. Coming around the final curve to see the cast of chickens on that steamboat singing "Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah" and then plunging down the flume....

The Snow White ride really scared me, too. Especially when the car would get real close to the Witch.

My car/boat/"people mover" got stuck on Pirates of the Carribbean. "Yo Ho Ho, We're the Pirates of the Carribbean." for fifteen minutes. I'll never go to Disneyworld again.

virtual mr.toad - a work in progress but very realistic so far

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

One of the things that made Mr. Toad unique was each side was a different ride

http://www.omniluxe.net/wyw/mtwr.htm

Attractions such as Space Mountain, Mission To Mars, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion and the Grand Prix Raceway had either multiple lanes, tracks, theaters, queue or pre-show areas, but only WDW's Toad ride presented what was a truly different ride experience based on which side of the queue you chose. It was the only time in Disney park history this has happened, and it happened for Mr. Toad.

man I didn't know Mr. Toad's was gone. :(

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

I still lived in Florida and had season passes in 1998. The decision to replace Mr. Toad was HUGE then.

To be fair, I liked Pooh ok enough when it debuted, but yeah, the loss of Toad couldn't justify it.

On January 22nd, 2008, Disneyland closed its version of the ride until November 20th for refurbishment.[3][4] Disney has announced the rainforest scene will not be removed for an America scene, however various Disney characters will be placed throughout the ride with a Mary Blair style. New boats and a deeper water canal are being added so the ride can better hold those who are overweight. There are also new lighting effects being added to the inside of the attraction because it was too dark and dreary compared to other versions of the ride.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

Sadly, the weight issue wasn't O_o, but the Mary Blair name drop was.

If You Had Wings

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

This dude has it right:

"that was like the only place that was air-conditioned when you were a little kid. So if you ran out of tickets and you were like really hot and sweaty and couldn't afford a Coke you could always go on "If You Had Wings" and sit in the air-conditioning and just go around a couple times, cool off, and then you re-energize." - Greg Parmer

http://home.cfl.rr.com/omniluxe/iyhwcsl.htm

Some mp3s of the typically virus-catchy theme song somewhere on that site too.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

Now can someone PLEASE find me a pic of the Club 33 sign in Disneyland but far away enough so that one can see the sign in its surroundings. Basically, not a close up. I've been looking for literally years.

Does that make sense?

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

i was one of the last people to ride Mr. Toad.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 21 November 2008 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

The entire (wonderful) site that is Widen Your World stems from his obsession with If You Had Wings:

http://home.cfl.rr.com/omniluxe/iyhw-main.htm

He's effectively gotten me to long to ride it.

My first WDW trip was after it changed to If You Could Fly, and my season passes as an adult began during the Dreamflight era, and ended after Buzzlightyear took the space.

But I LOVE those dry, dry rides/shows ala World of Motion and the original Universe of Energy (especially the Radok preshow)

be much inadequate one! (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 21 November 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah me too. Space Mountain was fun and all. But you had to wait FOREVER for, what, a five or ten-minute ride whereas you could ride If You Had Wings over and over. Which means it had more of an opportunity to etch itself in your memory.

I just wonder how people managed to videotape anything without getting caught by the Disney police.

oh I am such a Disneyland freak! I love the place and all the secrecy that is a part of it. Hidden Mickey's and underground tunnels and mysterious happenings when "cast members" go bad. Hidden stuff that only D-people know about and stuff that only gets triggered to happen when a "tourist" does something "unacceptable". It's the ultimate place for adult only things that is cloaked by kid playground!

Before there was a Tim Burton version of the Haunted Mansion, I and a friend had the b-Geebzus scared out of us by a "cast member" who was just in the area of the car we were in during the ride and he reached around the car and grabbed at my neck!!! It was amazingly scary and wonderfully orgasmic at the same time as the car whipped around and there he was...this handsome guy about our age grinning and saying: "Got ya!". I liked D-land before that and since then I am an addict. Fav rides:
Matterhorn pre snowman
Space Mt.
Mr. Toad
Sleeping Beauty Castle Tour
Swiss Family Robinson Tree House
Carousel of Tomorrow
Pirates
Haunted Mansion

Did a D-land FAP really happen?? I would be all over that if it were arranged again.

old skool D-land link: http://www.yesterland.com/

Wiggy Woo, Friday, 21 November 2008 05:34 (seventeen years ago)

I second The Carousel of progress ("it's a great big beautiful tomorrow"), the delta ride, and "If you had wings" was the perfect rest your feet ride - you could go around and around and I bet it would be a great make out ride.

Last time I went to Disney in Orlando, I went on the updated haunted house, which meant better special effects and holograms, but basically it was the same good old ride.

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Friday, 21 November 2008 05:58 (seventeen years ago)

I'm thinking of some plain old spaceland railway ride - is that the same as "if you had wingss"?

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Friday, 21 November 2008 06:01 (seventeen years ago)

the newish Monster Inc comedy show was awesome - the 3D monsters interviewed me during the show - they actually responded to everything I said... it was brilliant and I got to be one one of the big screens.

be much inadequate one! (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 21 November 2008 06:05 (seventeen years ago)

aaaawwwwhhh. I feel refreshed and relaxed after watching the video of the peoplemover. It was just such a nice sedate and good ride when we were really too warm and needed to be quiet and resting but still having a ride experience as little kids. The peoplemover was the bomb b/c it was a short wait ride and a L-O-N-G ride in return. It also was a teaser of rides that some might not have been on yet; like space mountain, arcade, autopia, etc. When I was really little it went through the Monsanto microscope ride and it was pretty cool too, it helped make me the adult nerd I am today interested in science; which all started with me asking my mom questions about the stuff I saw in the Monsanto* microscope ride.

*This is also the 1st connection I ever had/made with Branding. Although I didn't understand it, I still knew that Monsanto made scientific farming stuff that I saw advertised on the Walt Disney hour on TV every week. The Carnation store and the Welch's juice stand were Brands too and I asked mom about why they put the name on everything and she explained that those company's helped "Walt" afford to make new rides just for us. <sigh, I wish I were that naive again.>.

Wiggy Woo, Friday, 21 November 2008 06:56 (seventeen years ago)

Brotherhood of Stealing Shit to Sell to Trader Caravans (kingfish), Friday, 21 November 2008 07:58 (seventeen years ago)

yep, Monsanto= from mentor to monster. Harsh and cruel but correct. I still am not sure about dream flight, but will do some personal reflection to see if I can figure out what this was. Even still, Disneyland rocks, just cuz there is SO much right there lurking for any "tourist' with the right mind and gumption to scratch the surface and get into it.

i've been exactly once in between 2003 and this post. but this is a big step because nobody every had any interest in DisneySea/Tokyo and now all of the sudden we're banking hard into making this a summer plan.

nine months pass...

Going to Disneyworld in a week. The wife has been threatening to make us go for years and it is finally happening. God help me.
