trolling Marcello vs. anonymous/pseudonymous troll we're not even sure is anonymous, pseudonymous or a troll (the prosecution's evidence seems rather thin to me).

posting anonymously in order to insult other posters without fear of reprisal and then storming off in a huff when called on it, vowing never to return again (never meaning 48-72 hours) vs. posting anonymously/pseudonymously* in order to start threads that admittedly are inane (farting?) and then reacting with a fair amount of vitriol after being accused of being nonexistent, or worse, middle aged.

*this may not be true

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:07 (twenty-three years ago)

bring back denise

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:08 (twenty-three years ago)

am I the only one who finds the realms of ILXoria a bit less engaging these days?

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:08 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but how else does one while away the endless hours at w0rk?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i mean 'no you're not the only one but..'

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Becky Lucas, as I still think she's real. I may end up feeling stupid over this.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

as an unstoppable force of complete and utter irrationality, BL is unsurpassed.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:12 (twenty-three years ago)

um, maybe the moderators could install a temporary moratorium on meta-threads for awhile (well aware I'm not helping the situation). and I think becky is real too, or at least not just someone else incognito.

more coffee vs. tea please!

more kittens even

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah that too, Jim. "DL" just sounded arrogant and boring. BL sounds pretty self-assured/arrogant too, but INSANE. I want pictures of peoples' dinners.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

where is doomie (our champion!)??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

he's gone forever, apparently

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i know, so like WHERE'S DOOMIE?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Keep talking about me, guys.....I fuckin' LOVE it!

becky lucas (becky_lucas), Thursday, 30 January 2003 06:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Clearly she does. Maybe if we all keep very very quiet we won't need a new "Culture > Rectums" thread category?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 January 2003 07:38 (twenty-three years ago)

What I see is a division in the two different *styles* of trollers. Funny, cause I was thinking about this last night as I was falling asleep. Like, what *motivates* a troller.

Strangely, ILX is one of those places where a troller does not destroy the sense of community, in fact, having a common enemy/topic of discussion seems to draw the Hive Mind closer together. (not necessarily a bad thing.)

What I don't understand is what motivates the troller to stay somewhere where they are at best treated as a sort of pet, or at worst actively hated.

The Denise Lambert type is the "scream cause I'm in so much pain!" sort of type. I've been guilty of this sort of trolling myself. You're in so much pain yourself that you just want something, anything to let loose of the anger inside you. It's very difficult to deal with this sort of troller, because you have this sense of "why are you letting your deep psychological trauma become entertainment for bored office workers?" (Ultimately the reason I had to leave ILX for several months last year.)

The Smeggy Mucus type of troller... far weirder, because you don't actually *know* what is making them tick, or behave the way that they do. Obviously, someone has to be totally disturbed or in a lot of pain themselves to seek attention in such a bizarre way. But because they don't reveal enough of themselves to ever let on *why* they're acting the way that they are, there's not that sense of compassion (or pity) that makes anyone refrain from slapping them upside the head.

ILE *is* in my view, becoming increasingly solipsistic. What I mean is that we are forgetting that there are other people behind these screen names (even if they may be teenage girls or 40 year fat married men) and we're really just shouting at our own demons and therefore ourselves. An issue like dealing with a troll forces a community to examine its own identity and re-establish its agreed morals/ethics. It also forces a lot of navel-gazing and meta-threads, and too much of that is a bad thing.

Anyway, I need my tea.

kate, Thursday, 30 January 2003 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate that was a spot-on post.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 30 January 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah Kate- I was also wondering abt this Becky Lucas 'character'. good post.

Everyone could at least begin to understand marcello.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 30 January 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Denise Lambert in a fucking walk. Becky Lucas will never come up with an insult with the sheer poetic sweep of "gangrenous goat fucker," PhD. or not.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 30 January 2003 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Only a wetback like you would say that M Matos

becky lucas (becky_lucas), Thursday, 30 January 2003 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Matos, point proven.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 30 January 2003 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been anointed. yay.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 30 January 2003 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

wetback!!

.., Thursday, 30 January 2003 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know if ILE has gotten worse, it's been more active recently than in ages which has meant more entertainment but also more irritation, I get pretty wound up when I feel people are just posting to anyone who'll give them attention and don't actually give a fuck once they get it, to the point that you imagine if you had posted "I am getting married" or "I was elected president" they wouldnt even think to mention it. I probably shouldn't even say this but I need to get it out of my system.

At its worst ILX doesn't feel like interaction, it can just feel like getting pinned down by someone and having them scream at you about themselves and how great and simultaneously terrible they are incessantly.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 January 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

In this sense I don't really see any difference between Denise and Becky (and some others), except Becky seems to be ten times more persistent than anyone else and we don't have another side of her to appeal to either.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 January 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's worth remembering you don't have to be abusing someone or shouting at them to forget that there are other people behind the screen names either.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I like ILE a lot.
(Notice that I wrote, "a lot" instead of "alot," dastoor. I will probably forget by the next time I post though.)

I especially enjoy the increased activity on the board lately. Even my bf has been posting! I was just on the phone with him, and we both got quiet for a wee bit. So, I was like, "Hey, are you reading ILX right now or something?" and I was OTM. Ha ha.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 30 January 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

there are alot of dastoor's crazy rules I won't ever be obeying.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 January 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

take my hand come back to the land wheren everythings ours for a few hours, let me see you stripped down to the bone, let me hear you make decisions without your television on , let me hear you crying just for me-dm

becky lucas (becky_lucas), Thursday, 30 January 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Becky Lucas. I think the genius in her trolling is that so many of her posts are perfectly banal and workaday -- there is clearly some genuine thought and time and work behind this project.

Why is the Smeggy Mucus indicative of mental illness or desperate need of attention? Works well enough for simple self-amusement!

The only reason I do agree that BL is indeed sinister is that I sense there will be an inevitable prescripted "suicide" that will legitimately traumatize a few believers.

Aaron A., Friday, 31 January 2003 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Even if it's not a "prescripted" suicide, I still think it's best to put forth some reasons to stay alive on the off chance that someone who might be more seriously depressed reads them and finds some hope or at least decides to re-think their lives.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 31 January 2003 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope someone who needs help finds your post, IPOW, and is helped by it. And while I'm convinced BL is a troll, I could be wrong!

Aaron A., Friday, 31 January 2003 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaaaaaaaaaron. Why don't you just shut up about me, because You are just upsetting me, and whatever you think of me just keep to yourself.
The troll remark can be easily be bestowed upon you, You just look like a trouble maker from the distance and up close you look short and hairy and ugly.Shaaaaaaaaaaarup.

becky lucas (becky_lucas), Friday, 31 January 2003 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking as a fairly irregular poster I gotta say the whole thing's been wildly entertaining to watch.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 31 January 2003 09:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Bernoski...? No. Can't be.
