I would like to see a whale

I would very much like to see a whale. Alive. It's one of the few natural wonders I have a strong desire to see. It would really leave me awestruck, yah.

Anyone seen a whale? Who's with me? Hooray for whales!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 28 December 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i have seen many whales while on holidy in nantucket. they are indeed awe inspiring animals, huge and powerful, like living natural monuments, yet they seem so gentle. call me a bleeding old hippie but their communication is cool, too. apparently their language is ever changn, like pop music or something.

masonicboom, Saturday, 28 December 2002 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the last whale i saw was a smelly and very dead one last year or maybe early this year at aramoana.
i have orca on the walls of my bedroom as a frieze type thingy. i guess that aint quite the samr huh?

hellbaby (hellbaby), Saturday, 28 December 2002 01:04 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, I've always wanted to go swimming with very large whales (blue whales etc). I think that the largest animal on earth, coupled with an unknowable depth below you would be quite the thrill (and I'm hardly a thrill-seeker).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 28 December 2002 01:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw that whale at aramoana too, i think thats the only time i ever seen one. it wasn't a real big whale but you know what, it had a penis the size of my leg! anyway it made me feel pretty sad. you know what else, i saw in the news today that 2000 species of plants & animals in NZ are in danger of extinction, TWO FUCKIN THOUSAND.

(doorag), Saturday, 28 December 2002 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't believe New Zealand has that many different species! I may not have an entirely accurate picture of the country, but I thought if you didn't count sheep there weren't 2000 animals in the country.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 28 December 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of birds and reptiles in NZ (New Zealanders, I am right?)

Anna (Anna), Saturday, 28 December 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I was sort of joking, mostly about my own false mental image of NZ.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm no expert on whales, but are you sure that is one, Nick? Don't they normally have fewer legs than that?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 28 December 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you sort of joking now too Martin?

Graham (graham), Saturday, 28 December 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to see a whale too please, if a trip is being organised.

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 28 December 2002 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

lots of birds, reptiles, fish and plants in NZ also some bats and frogs and untold numbers of creepycrawly type things. The possibilities for extinction are endless! I have only seen a whale skeleton or one a long way off from the coast. I would not want to swim with whales as I think there's too much of that going on in NZ and the whales are getting a bit harrassed with tour boats etc. I can't stop this happening and I guess there are valid reasons for it (mostly a way of making money for people without lots of options) but I would not be comfortable adding to it.

isadora (isadora), Sunday, 29 December 2002 04:59 (twenty-three years ago)

How about a whale being exploded with dynamite?

Craphead Facebutt, Sunday, 29 December 2002 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Last night I dreamed our neighbourhood was being terrorised by some enormous whales that escaped from a tin. They kind of became lobsters after a while. Then I sold some stuff to Urban Outfitters for £2.75.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess what I'm saying is be careful.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 December 2002 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

It's you who needs to be careful.Careful with the cheese before bedtime.....

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Sunday, 29 December 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

http://perp.com/whale/ explains the exploding whale a little better. I sat for hours downloading it the first time I saw it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 29 December 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

hey i remembered that i have seen a pod of live whales this year just offa the coast of brighton beach and they appeared after a bunch of earth healers had been doing their thing in the area

hellbaby (hellbaby), Monday, 30 December 2002 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, posts like the follow up to the whales into lobsters one really sum up all that is good in this goddamn world.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 30 December 2002 03:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Whales are bitches by the way.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 30 December 2002 03:42 (twenty-three years ago)

If the exploding whale picture above is the one I'm thinking of (the one that was blown up on an Oregon beach & destroyed a car), it's hilarious!! I've seen it on various Discover channel "silly videos of interactions between nature & people" type shows a few times.

I've seen orcas from Vancouver Island ferries, and grey whales & orca families -both from only a few yards away- up by Tofino B.C. (on Vancouver Island). They were kind of cool, but I spent so much time trying to get good pictures that I mostly remember fumbling with my camera. I did get some good photos that I'd post, but the digital versions are on Kodak photo disks, and my powerbook is diskdrive-less. :(

The baby orca with the family was my favorite though, it kept jumping around & showing off.

lyra (lyra), Monday, 30 December 2002 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw a dead whale once, it was washed up on the beach in sligo. it was a bit stinky.

rener (rener), Monday, 30 December 2002 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

why del griffith, are you sure it's not a whale that thinks it's a Hypophthalmichthys molitrix that thinks it's a Cypselurus starksi?

that's off mass. actually, but that said there was something in the local press here lately to the effect that whales are being spotted in increasing numbers pretty near to me.

sonderborg, Thursday, 22 July 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, basking sharks are common enough in my neck of the woods for local fisherman to do tours based on sightings, too.

xxp quick news check says first sightings of humpbacks in the irish sea in 20 years this week too, so obv the whales are up to something

E.

Gloucester- they stressed that there wasn't any guaranteed sightings or anything, but as it turned out we got close to 3 seperate groups and out of maybe 4 hours out there were pretty much surrounded by whales for maybe 2 1/2.

Ooooh Gloucester! I love that area. I should go on one from there. Do you have some connection to the area? IIRC you mentioned something about your dad being there earlier this year.

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Thursday, 22 July 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

yeha my dad lived in gloucester for the past couple of years and moved the huge distance to rockport last year- he works (when it's to be had) as a fishing captain out of gloucester.

Oh wow - I had no idea! Rockport is really cute. I like it there a lot. You should let me know the next time you come over here.

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Thursday, 22 July 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

was over twice in three months at the time of that whale shot, i tihnk that's prob 2 years ago now. mostly we get him to drag his carcass back this way cos rockport/gloucester's nice and all but once you've flown 5 hours e/w to see it twice, you start thinkin where else those airmiles could bring you tbh :)

Has admitted to being Irish in order to have sex (darraghmac), Thursday, 22 July 2010 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

True.

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Thursday, 22 July 2010 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

also i seem to have inherited a new family over there, which is kinda putting me off visiting tbh.

but anyway WHALES

seeing as you've not seen one up close or nothin, lemme spell it out in layman's terms: they're like fish, ok, but BIG and AWESOME

i don't know if i posted this here anywhere on ilx - i probably did, possibly on a glasgow thread - i saw a whale in the river clyde just passed the squinty bridge last year. it was one of the most surreal moments of my life.

Has admitted to being Irish in order to have sex (darraghmac), Thursday, 22 July 2010 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i knew it had actually happened because the next day when i went into work i said "ok, this is going to sound crazy but..." etc. and someone had heard about it on the news. i told the girl i was seeing at the time about it directly after it happened on the telephone and she was completely blazé about it as if that shit was quotidian.
