KRAFT DINNER!
'Its should be cheese and Maccaroni just because its the cheesiest.'

ps. You can turn yourself yellow/orange from eating too much. Just ask any jockish university student living off campus for the first time.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

*i'm* the lead in mac & cheese!

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 20 December 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

k-classic. esp. when it's the fancy restaurant kind w/breadcrumbs on top

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 20 December 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

classic, the best food ever invented, though when it's bad it can be very bad indeed, and I hate hate hate the watery Kraft kind in a box. (the Velveeta kind in a box, tho = super)

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Nar put down the glories that is Kraft Dinner. You already took away our Kraft Caramels and turned them into something else. Leave our foodstuffs alone yea foreign invaders. Pillaging our food industry.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...
Luna Park's poshy mac & cheese = yumyumyum

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:40 (nineteen years ago)

i have never tried this. :-(

stevienixed, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:56 (nineteen years ago)

k cobain's fave food too.

pisces, Saturday, 5 May 2007 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, another Canadian with a Kraft Caramels fetish up there. I think this is why I will never truly pass for Canadian -- I can enjoy Kraft Dinner but can't get all that excited about the damn caramels.

Casuistry, Saturday, 5 May 2007 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Classic. Easy Mac is a quick and delicious meal, and it definitely beats a 10-minute walk to the dining hall when it's pouring down rain.

Nathan, Saturday, 5 May 2007 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

baked is best

river wolf, Saturday, 5 May 2007 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Baked is the BOMB and it's not hard, it's even in the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook along with other weird mid-century "labor-saving" American casseroles involving cream of mushroom soup.

Laurel, Saturday, 5 May 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

try being a deep fried mac n cheese eater

A B C, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

i had a dream about velveeta shells & cheese this morning. i cannot remember for certain what it involved but i think it was surprisingly simple instructions (i have never made nor do i have any idea how to make velveeta shells & cheese but ive always figured it was complex compared to the beloved kraft dinner)

deeznuts, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/53259/velveeta_shells_cheese_versus_kraft.html

Is it really the cheesiest? What criteria does Kraft use to determine which macaroni and cheese dinner is actually the cheesiest? I'm guessing that it is up to the individual to make up their own minds. Cheesiest or not, it is delicious. There is no denying that.

The Barenaked Ladies have a popular song called "If I Had A Million Dollars". In it they sing that if they had a million dollars they wouldn't have to eat Kraft Macaroni and Cheese...but they still would". I wonder if they have ever tried Velveeta Shells and Cheese.

deeznuts, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, velveeta actually is a fair bit easier; you still cook the pasta the same way, but then the cheese sauce just comes in a foil pouch that you squeeze over the macaroni, rather than having to combine powdered cheese + milk + butter. I actually think velveeta tastes worse, though, because of the lack of fresh dairy ingredients.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 5 May 2007 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

I AM MAKING VELVEETA NOW

EXCITED!!

deeznuts, Saturday, 5 May 2007 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

also yes the ability overload on the butter while underdoing the milk does give kraft dinner a certain edge HOWEVER surely the orange space powder shit negates most of this

deeznuts, Saturday, 5 May 2007 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

What are you talking about. The whole point is to cook it so that you get the occasional solid clump of salty orangey creepy goodness.

Casuistry, Saturday, 5 May 2007 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

This was ALL WE EVER ATE at my grandma's house, the 10 cents a box stuff, so not good. And it makes me feel poor & depressed.

Velveeta is good.

Annie's shells w/white cheddar is prolly my favorite.

I guess baked mac & cheese was Thomas Jefferson's favorite food! Or so according to a trivia book I read in elementary school.

Abbott, Sunday, 6 May 2007 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

Every once in awhile, I indulge in mac n cheese. Maybe every two months, though it used to be more frequent. I don't add the entire packet of cheese powder, mind. Only about a fourth of it. I couldn't take that much sodium. Then I add a bit of soy milk. I still think Mac n Cheese is a really, classic, wonderful thing and that the boxes are so incredibly cheap is classic as well.

All hail M&C!

Bimble, Sunday, 6 May 2007 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

I entered a mac'n cheese competition last year. Didn't win, but made some damn tasty cheesy starchy casseroles. Baked, topped with handfuls of buttered toasted breadcrumbs = mmmmm.

Jaq, Sunday, 6 May 2007 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

Buttered. Hm.

You know what I want for dinner tonight?

Well, I don't have the proper noodles, and I won't be arsed to go back to the store.

Casuistry, Sunday, 6 May 2007 02:06 (nineteen years ago)

But guys seriously
http://cache.gridskipper.com/travel/091205.3.jpg

A B C, Sunday, 6 May 2007 03:38 (nineteen years ago)

Jaq, I have problems allowing TWO starches: the pasta is already one, and breadcrumbs are just too much for me, personally. But topping it with some crumbled browned sausage (Andouille, obv) or bacon or any number of meats is NUMMMMMMMMMM. Plus with your nutmeg & cayenne combination, oh lordy, I already ate scallops and mushrooms (FOR THE FIRST TIME GUISE) and brownies tonight but I could make room for some mac.

Laurel, Sunday, 6 May 2007 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

It is the battle of the starches, soft yielding starch vs. crispy crunchy starch! But also, yes, browned cheesy crust is okay by me. I watched the 1st disc of Julia Child yesterday and now have all kinds of starchy ideas (The Potato Show!)

Jaq, Sunday, 6 May 2007 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

i have never tried this. :-(

Whenever my husband's out -he hates cheese - I have some mac'n'cheese nowadays. DA YUM.

stevienixed, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

i didn't have kraft growing up so i don't fuck with it now, but i like making fancypants baked mac & cheese with a lot of tomatoes and hot sauce.

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

i have discovered that incorporating egg into the cheese sauce during preparation allows for a nice binding agent and lends a nice fluffy texture to the cheezy bits. ideal.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

Macaroni pie from Greggs is the shit.

Scotch pie with macaroni cheese inside of it instead of mutton and without a lid for those who don't habla.

jim, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

i can never get that "burned" bits on top though. :-( i make a portion for 4 ppl but have it all for myself. HURRAH

stevienixed, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

My gran makes proper macaroni and cheese from scratch with diced ham, so nice.

Bodrick III, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

So do I. So easy. Except for the burned bits. heh

stevienixed, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

diced pancetta in a gruyere/cheddar sauce, dawgs.

ian, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

a flange in your gran's macaroni

had the Mariachi Mac N Cheese straight outta beecher's for lunch.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

gruyere/cheddar

this is key but i throw in some mozz for good measure too. and sometimes roasted red pepper.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

I did not like cheese as a kid. Missed out on my mom's hommade stuff. Never experienced Kraft stuff.

It's a great foodstuff, though, undoubtedly. Even vegan versions I've had are fulfilling

dell, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

i know everyone is all about the gruyere -- i find cheddar to be a bit oily which can makes the crust and sides unpalatably hard if it's overcooked even a minute too long -- but for me the true nostalgic classic is rigatoni in an American cheese (LOL white) sauce with tomato slices on top. THANKS, NAN, AWESOME MACARONI & CHEESE

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

LOL = Land O' Lakes, I mean! although mac & cheese is kinda LOL white

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

(i would start a series of polls for the best macaroni and the best cheese(s) to use but i've got to run out the door right now. i'm fuckin' hungry.)

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

people need to submit recipes here

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 08:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say if you don't like breadcrumbs on the top of the mac/cheese, stale-ish powdered Parmesan could be your friend. That, nutmeg and cracked white pepper. Also the cheese doesn't go stringy or weirdly coagulate in the oven if you are on top of sauce-making skills.

Any shouts for Stouffer's? It might be US Bird's Eye now. I live on that stuff when I go home for Xmas and the cabin fever becomes an element of food procurement.

Kraft dinners are better with the orange powder cheese because I do them with butter, pinch of nutmeg and whole milk. Then gobs and gobs of pepper on top.

Brooklyn mac/cheese eaters: Ever been to Moto? Their (belyingly simple) version of m/c is the best I've ever had.

please don't what what i think you're going to say

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 11:15 (eighteen years ago)

I've only ever had mac n cheese made myself with bechamel mixed thru short pasta, with various cheeses, maybe some tomato slices on top, bread crumbs, then under the grill/in the oven.

Trayce, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

Good pasta for said: mostachioli (mini penne), small rigatoni, maybe twirly macaroni.

Trayce, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

Tracer, call waaaaaaaaahmbulances for both of us.

musically, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I have never had Mac 'n' Cheese. Does it come out of a tin, or is a ready meal type thing? Or do you make it yourself?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

i have the beecher's cookbook. their mac and cheese recipe really is THAT GOOD.

get bent, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

Does it come out of a tin,
No.

or is a ready meal type thing?
Sometimes.

Or do you make it yourself?
Hopefully.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

the idea of mac & cheese from a can is really repulsing me right now.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

i have the beecher's cookbook. their mac and cheese recipe really is THAT GOOD.

ysi?

G00blar, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

Never mind; google sez it's everywhere on the web.

G00blar, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

I'm surprised there ISN'T mac 'n' cheese in a can in the UK actually. "Instructions: puncture top of can, place can in boiling water for 20 minutes."

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

there is! heinz macaroni cheese.

lauren, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

forsaking the ampersand crucial to any mac & cheese recipe

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha i love how the creators of that heinz atrocity can't quite bring themselves to call it "macaroni and cheese" - the prick of conscience?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

but wait, is there actually any macaroni in the can? or is it just the cheese sauce?

"macaroni cheese" --> "cheese for use with macaroni"

holding out hope

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

Mac and cheese exist in europe but they're not usually sold/served as "mac n chees", just as, you know, pasta with cheese sauce

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry elmo, there's definitely macaroni in that can.

ENBB, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

five years pass...

Son, 20, Beat Father, 54, During Argument Over Macaroni And Cheese

A family argument over boxed macaroni and cheese resulted in the arrest of a 20-year-old South Carolina man who is jailed for allegedly battering his father, police report.

Brian Rossi, 54, told sheriff’s deputies that he was “trying to make some macaroni and cheese for dinner” yesterday when he “discovered that there was only pasta and no more cheese packets” in the box.

After throwing out the pasta, Rossi told his son Alex to “stop using all of the cheese packets,” according to a Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office report.

After exchanging a few words with his father, Alex “ran after him and began to punch him in the face and head.” The younger Rossi “eventually took Brian to the ground and continued to hit him.”
