Ask A Drunk

Hello peeps,

Until recently I was posting on a Lusenet board called "Ask A Drunk". While it is a silly stupid mess that most of you would think was just a load of wankers pratting about, a few people are very fond of it, myself included.

Basically, it is unmoderated and we are getting lurked and trolled big time. Myself and a friend want to start a new moderated forum to get rid of the problem and need advice on how to do it. We've got the box to host it on, we just need to know the code etc. We'd like it to be very Lusenet in style, simple and effective.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

But be careful.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 31 October 2002 14:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks muchly. I will have to consult my fellow drunks first and see what they think. What would be the deal with moderation and the like?

For those of you unfamiliar with AAD, the best reason for its existence is this - a while back we got a new thread asking about a 'new herbal high' called "Blissium". It was most probably a bit of market research by someone hoping to market it in the near future to see what people knew. Being Ask A Drunk it was met with the usual amount of wierdness and stupidity. But because there is next to no information about it on the net, our thread started coming up very high in the Google results for a search on "Blissium". So every poor fool who was searching for information on it was arriving on Ask A Drunk. It kept us amused anyway. Thanks for your help.

Hmm...that sounds familiar but I just can't put my fremming finger on it.

Miss Laura, Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

if we combined the two, we could get all the trolls into one place at once and then *BAM!*

this is a blissy elliot exclusive..

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

well not trolls, random googlers, i got mixed-up..

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you create a board, the username you create it with becomes moderator of it. You can hand out moderator privelegs willy nilly to anyone else as well.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ask A Drunk = classic. I have lurked longtime (well, intermittently). Join us!

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sounds good. We promise to behave, as a rule we're a pretty inoffensive bunch. We'll mostly be discussing blissium, grebes and the sleepy Lancastrian market town of Ormskirk.

Thanks very very much for helping me and my fellow drunks out. I've been awfully annoyed the last few weeks watching Ask A Drunk go to the wall, I'm sure most of you can sympathise that losing your favourite board to a hurl of abuse and html high jinx must be a pretty depressing experience. Next time I'm in London I'll buy you all a pint and possibly a car each too.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Btw I once had privelegs but the doctor sorted them out. That Blissium works wonders!

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Someone needs to forward many many of these pints to Andrew NF, it's his computer we're using up.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have a server as well if we ever need a backup box

Jarlrmai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'll email him a pint forthwith. I've set the board up, but I'm having problems adding another admin. It says -

Problem editing adminstrator:

No Privileges Set

You cannot add an administrator with no privileges

Any ideas what is going on?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

Have you clicked boxes for what you want them to be able to do?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah they're already ticked by default, just the "Allow user to revoke other administrator's privileges" isn't. I've tried ticking that one, not ticking that one, unticking them all and them ticking them again. I keep getting the same message

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

ALright, there's a bug in the system that doesn't let you give out priveleges, ynless like me, TE and MS you have superpowers. WWho and what who do you want added?

Graham (bubbles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

lynskey can you email us — eg me, tom and graham — the ip number of yr boring troll? just in case...

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

could user "jarlrmai" be added as admin please? I doubt we'll be able to get the ip of the troll.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

not from the lusenet admin pages?

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

or anyway if s/he turns up on ask-a-drunk-on-ilxor (or do our superpowers allow us to interfere on all the other ilxor boards?)

bwahaha

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

We didn't have admin status at the old AAD, hence the move. I'm looking forward to the new blood that being on here will doubtless bring. My big fear is that we will lose Sue Denim, one of our best posters. She/he was very funny indeed. If anyone knows who it was, please let them know about the move.

Are they all talking in code over there?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 31 October 2003 21:52 (twenty years ago) link

And how do you get "Blissium"? Anyone know?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 31 October 2003 21:57 (twenty years ago) link

Is asking drunks a dangerous thing to do?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 31 October 2003 21:57 (twenty years ago) link

Depends what you ask them for.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 31 October 2003 21:58 (twenty years ago) link

So...are they talking in code?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 1 November 2003 08:54 (twenty years ago) link

Not really.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 1 November 2003 14:04 (twenty years ago) link

Lynskey is a comic genius.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 1 November 2003 16:20 (twenty years ago) link

Or...is he?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 1 November 2003 16:20 (twenty years ago) link

Insofar as I am aware (and this is a ticklish question of itself) the only drunk on Ask A Drunk who talks in code is one hurley by name. This can be accounted for by the fact that hurley is a native Navajo speaker... and a drunk. Interestingly, hurley has no navajo blood (although he is an avid collector and would certainly appreciate anyone who might forward him a sample).

His formative years were spent in the company of wolves. This was only natural and expected, as hurley's parents were barristers. At present, hurley is a barrista by day, publican by night, and the very picture of rude health. We sometimes wish he were a bit less rude, but that is by the bye.

Aimless, Saturday, 1 November 2003 18:30 (twenty years ago) link

"Or...is he?"

He's a bitter, bitter man.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Sunday, 2 November 2003 03:20 (twenty years ago) link

Thus, a perfect candidate for a satirist. Provided he doesn't succumb of acute satyriasis first. Then, when Lynskey dies (as is so often the case with our kind), he may plagiarize Jonathon Swift's epitaph. It is written in Latin, so the translation here is my own:

Move along there, you. Here reclines [INSERT NAME HERE], passed out where savage indigents cannot lacerate his man-bosom.

I cannot think of a more appropriate monument to Mr. Lynskey.

Aimless, Sunday, 2 November 2003 19:16 (twenty years ago) link

I think I love Lynskey.

Bounder!

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 2 November 2003 19:29 (twenty years ago) link

I'm a shameless cad, I admit it.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 2 November 2003 19:30 (twenty years ago) link

While it is true that being a cad and being a bounder are two leading causes of not-being-a-gentleman (more formally known as "agentility"), they are two altogether different flavours of that abhorrent condition. Come, let us abhor agenteel men.

A cad ill-treats the flower of the sex, otherwise known as gentlewomen. A bounder presumes upon his betters, the gentry, and attempts to insinuate his crude, ill-bred self among them, while harboring in his bosom the same crude ideas and dishonorable intentions that invariably infect his low kind. Two different things, you see.

why are you getting drunk?

continually topping myself (flamboyant goon tie included), Saturday, 8 March 2014 06:54 (ten years ago) link

just happened incidentally. had two beers with dinner with my mom and my aunt. then i cracked open the pint of barleywine ale the woman who works at the liquor store near my workplace recommended to me. i was going to drink it while watching tarkovsky's solaris but i turned the movie off because i felt tired. then i started reading the internet and didn't feel tired anymore.

Treeship, Saturday, 8 March 2014 07:02 (ten years ago) link

you know you have a dedicated ask treeship thread right?

dylannn, Saturday, 8 March 2014 07:09 (ten years ago) link

the tone of that one isn't right for a friday night. it's mostly nakh asking me about the irish diaspora.

Treeship, Saturday, 8 March 2014 07:16 (ten years ago) link

also by bumping this thread, i'm encouraging other drunk people to solicit questions. it could be a thing.

you're an OK ship, treeship, but you should get a little-to-a-lot drunker before posting itt any more.
