Bless you reflex followed by a morbid "be dead soon"

Furshlugginer!

'Gesundheit' because 'bless you' squicks me out and because 'stop it'/'shut up'/a prolonged stony glare are rude (but hilarious) options.

My dad grew up with "gesundheit" and it prevailed in our family as I grew up. I married a "bless you" person and it has overtaken "gesundheit" in my married life, although a gesundheit still sneaks in from time to time. So I am sternumentambilingual.

That should have been poststernumentambilingual.

Chinese speakers do not typically comment on another person's sneeze.

Think we've discussed this before, a long time ago, but in my parents' house it was forbidden to say 'bless you' or acknowledge bodily emissions of any kind. We weren't even supposed to say 'excuse me' if we burped. This got me told off a few times when I went to other people's houses. I once went out with a girl who would loudly shout 'BLESS YOU' at people sitting on separate tables from us at the restaurant, which always made me cringe horribly.

Do English-speakers in the US really say 'Gesundheit' in a non-ironic context?

In France I believe it's 'A tes souhaits'. Funny how all these phrases sound like an echo of a sneeze

Was raised in a primarily gesundheit household, although when we went the other way it was usually a full-on Godbless you. Bless you sounds better to me so I tend to favor it.

I wish I could stop responding to sneezes because "bless you" is a stupid superstition but people take it as rude if you do nothing and I can't afford to give that impression at work so here we are...gesundheit.

Of course Esperanto has its own sneeze response. Does anybody sneeze in Incubus? I recall almost nothing from that movie

20-lol pileup (WilliamC), Wednesday, 19 April 2017 15:51 (seven years ago) link

i need to start saying something. during my younger days of rebellion i wouldn't say bless you because i thought it implied that a god is doing the blessing and that's just silly. god won't bless all the people that are fucked over in the world but it will bless someone who shoots mucus out of their nose at a million miles per hour? actually that scenario seems more believable to me now. and also it's weird to command a god to do something. i also saw it as an annoying daily infusion of deities into my life and i wanted no part of that. i know all of this is incredibly stupid, but church fucked me up so badly when i was younger and the repercussions continue to this day, often in trivial and incredibly stupid ways.

so now i realize that no one actually thinks about those things when they say bless you, and that we all just say something because the silence is uncomfortable. i know that because i have created the uncomfortable silence so many times. so now i generally express amazement at the sneeze if it's mine ("ooph!" is a common one for me) but i struggle in the aftermath of the sneezes of others. i still don't want to say bless you, so that's out. saying gesundheit out of nowhere just seems impossible so late in life, like if you suddenly started wearing a furry vest all the time. it's just not me. so basically just don't sneeze around me, and if you do and i don't say anything, i am sorry but i can't fix it.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 16:08 (seven years ago) link

Errrr, I don't think most people think that much about it, it just comes out of their mouth when they hear the noise come out of your nose.

Punnet of the Grapes (Tom D.), Wednesday, 19 April 2017 16:13 (seven years ago) link

I will usually say gesundheit but often I just go "oooh, achoo!" because I am a blithering idiot.
