Also, has anyone eaten half of these in 20 years? I can never remember the differences between Catalina, French, and Thousand Island. I think of them as all various shades of neon red/orange.

Italian is most tolerable but nearly anyone I know would just use olive oil + balsamic vinegar + salt/pepper + a couple of herbs if you really want to get fancy.

Even growing up, Italian (pref Zesty) was my fave but I did my share of experimentation with the orange/red ones.

Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Saturday, 3 December 2016 17:53 (seven years ago) link

italian because no mayo

ranch if no eggs/vinegar included

i've had French but not in eons. thousand island was a fav as a kid.

but yeah half of these have kinda fallen out of favor. I vote Thousand Island

Neanderthal, Saturday, 3 December 2016 19:18 (seven years ago) link

catalina and french are the same thing

italian is the only one of these i put on salad, ranch and thousand island are for sandwiches imo

i'm a bleu cheese guy

Neanderthal, Saturday, 3 December 2016 19:44 (seven years ago) link

I probably should have left in bleu cheese and Caesar.

russian cuz of reubens

Russian is king and will always be king, is there really any discussion here?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 4 December 2016 01:09 (seven years ago) link

And by "Russian dressing" I mean 1/2 ketchup 1/2 mayo obviously, none of this fancy bs. Should be the color of Pepto-Bismol and the consistency of phlegm. YEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHH

big mac sauce

flappy bird, Sunday, 4 December 2016 06:21 (seven years ago) link

Ranch, obviously. Still the best choice for a standard chef's salad.

No Caesar, no credibility.

Of these, French was my favorite growing up, as I recall. Consumed plenty of Ranch, too. These really do seem like an anachronism these days, though. I feel like there's not even a ranch dressing option with buffalo wings anymore, it's all blue cheese, period.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 4 December 2016 06:41 (seven years ago) link

since mayo is the loogie of the Evil One half of these are barred from further consideration. it meant salads at restos were a challenge when I was a kid. usually resorted to French back then b/c it seemed impossible that it contained loog but in retrospect it was just ketchup no? voted italian b/c it's what I'd choose today, save creamy snot-laden variants.

Newman's Own Olive Oil & Vinegar--basically Italian.

clemenza, Sunday, 4 December 2016 15:28 (seven years ago) link

Is it any good? Because Sund4r's Own Olive Oil and Vinegar takes about 1m to make and costs next to nothing.

So French/Catalina were mostly ketchup and Russian/Thousand Island were ketchup/mayo? I hate mayo too, although I was a little more open to it as a kid. As an adult, I don't even like ketchup very much, although I'll put it on fries when vinegar is not available (i.e. in the US, usually).

Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Sunday, 4 December 2016 15:35 (seven years ago) link

Of these, French was my favorite growing up, as I recall.

Same -- I was a young Francophile who even claimed the Renault was a wonderful car.

Now if I use dressing at all it's a homemade mustard vinaigrette or the balsamic vinegar/olive oil combo.

(xpost) I like it a lot, and all the money goes to charity. Was actually having it the night Newman died (which was the night of one of the 2008 debates).

clemenza, Sunday, 4 December 2016 17:00 (seven years ago) link

Italian since all the thick/creamy ones are kind of vomit-inducing IMHO.

what's vomit when you get to enjoy a nice chunky dressing

Neanderthal, Sunday, 4 December 2016 21:44 (seven years ago) link

tho i recognize the amount of dressing i slather on my salad a) makes me not health conscious and b) makes me not a salad connoisseur
